06-12-2011 22:13 The 1948 Arab--Israeli War, known to Israelis as the War of Independence (Hebrew: ????? ??????? or ????? ?????????, Milkhemet Ha'atzma'ut or Milkhemet Hakomemmiyut) or War of Liberation (Hebrew: ????? ???????, Milkhemet Hashikhrur -- was the first in a series of wars fought between the State of Israel and its Arab neighbours in the continuing Arab--Israeli conflict. The war commenced after the termination of the British Mandate for Palestine and the creation of an independent Israel at midnight on 14 May 1948 when, following a period of civil war, Arab armies invaded Palestine, escalating the war to one between sovereign states.
