History, Origin, What the Name Means, the Officials, and the Synagogue Services The Name Synagogue We get the English synagogue by transliterating the Greek sunagoge, which means, a bringing together (from sunago, to gather together). In its earliest usage, sunagoge did not refer to a building or place of gathering, but rather to the group of people who were gathered together. The Greek word synagogue is used more than 200 times in the Septuagint for gatherings of people, but never for a building where people gathered.
