Im sitting in a sold-out first weekend movie premiere of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, delighted by the fact that this movie was filmed in my Pittsburgh neighborhood, Squirrel Hill. Its an upscale, multicultural neighborhood far more diverse today than it used to be that is also the center of the citys Jewish community.

Congregation Bnai Emunah, a San Francisco synagogue founded by Jewish refugees from Shanghai, will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a weekend of events Dec. 20-22 including, fittingly, a Chinese food Kiddush. IT was a combination of a grassroots effort, strong leadership from Jewish businessman Sidney Sinclair who had just moved to North Parramatta from London plus a healthy dose of chutzpah which led to a meeting in mid-1949 at the Pendle Hill home of Alf and Doris Borman. There, a bold decision was made to establish a synagogue to serve the estimated 80 Jewish families in the Parramatta region.
