As anticipation builds for the opening of Israels new National Library sometime next year, it is important to recall its more-than-a-century long antecedents.Bnai Brith established its first lodge in Jerusalem in 1888, when the organization, founded in New York, was already 45 years old. The lodge attracted a mix of rabbis, academics, translators and other professionals to its mission of fostering Jewish identity and public service. Indeed, the first mazkir or secretary of the Jerusalem Lodge was none other than Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the father of the modern Hebrew language.Early attempts to found libraries in Jerusalem were short lived, due in no small part to a lack of funding.
