Synagogue upset with plans for nearby Dunkin' Donuts

A proposed Dunkin' Donuts move in South Portland is causing some controversy.

There is currently already a 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts at the corner on Main Street near Westbrook Street

CAFUA Management, which owns Dunkin' Donuts franchises, told the city it wanted to move to where the St. Johns the Evangelist Church is, about a block away from the current location. That couldn't happen because of current zoning laws.

Now the proposed location is next to the current Dunkin' Donuts. It's land that the city owns, but the new building could cause shadows in the nearby Bet Ha'am Synagogue's sanctuary and garden.

South Portland Mayor Jerry Jalbert said the city council seems split on whether to lease the land or not, but will discuss it when they talk about zoning procedures at Monday night's council workshop.

CAFUA Management did not return calls for comment.
