Police officials and the Shomrim members' own accounts of Thursday's encounter indicated that the group violated police guidelines that forbid civilian patrol groups to chase down possible crime suspects. The Police Department's Community Affairs Bureau works with hundreds of groups that use unarmed citizens to patrol their neighborhoods, parks and apartment buildings. In most groups, the civilian patrol members are provided with windbreakers and walkie-talkies and are urged to act only as the "eyes and ears" of the department by reporting crime to the police, according to a police memorandum.

Sifting through the crop tops and sheer blouses for sale at Junee, a boutique in Borough Park, Brooklyn, is an unexpected clientele: some of New York Citys most modest women. Filled with bright colors and the latest fashions, the store specializes in outfitting Hasidic women, who follow a deeply conservative sartorial doctrine that, among other things, requires their elbows, collarbones and knees to always be covered, and if married, their hair to be hidden under a scarf or wig. Junee and other stores like it have seen their sales rise in recent years because of a flood of new products designed to make modesty and fashion compatible.

The Chernobil dynasty was founded by Rabbi Menaem Naum of Chernobil (1730?1797), a student of Yisrael Baal Shem Tov and Dov Ber, the Magid of Mezritsh. In addition to serving as the magid (preacher) of Chernobil, Reb Naum apparently traveled around Ukraine, mediating, advising, and spreading his teachings.

Whether out of shortsightedness or strategic malice, some of our religious leaders have directly fostered an atmosphere where thorough research is sneered at, the scientific method is doubted and the motivations of professionals are assumed to be nefarious and steeped in anti-religious animus. In more recent years, when the Department of Education pushed for an increase in secular studies in the citys yeshivas, some of our leaders once again instigated their community to oppose these much-needed reforms.
