(Cleveland Jewish News via JTA) An Ohio city hired a private investigator to observe Jews entering and exiting a local synagogue on the first day of Rosh Hashanah as evidence for an ongoing lawsuit, outraging Orthodox Jews there and further inflaming tensions in a local dispute over worship protocols. University Heights officials said the investigator, who had been hired by the mayor at an undisclosed cost, was there to monitor the number of people entering the Aleksander Shul to determine if the congregation was adhering to court-ordered rules on maximum occupancy.

Here is an interesting sermon from Rosh Hashanah. Jonathan Blake, a leading Reform rabbi in New York, likens Israel to Abraham and says there is a good Israel and an Israel of dangerous fanaticism that lifts a knife against the innocent.

(JTA) If theres one thing Rabbi Sholom Lipskar wants to remember from the aftermath of the Surfside condo collapse in June, its the small cards that he distributed to the first responders and search-and-rescue teams working at the site. Inscribed with Psalm 23, a psalm often recited in times of trouble that begins with the words The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, the cards were meant to protect and inspire those charged with extracting survivors and, later, recovering bodies.

Dear Editor, I would like to respond to Rabbi Jonathan Romains and the former Archbishop George Careys essay, There is nothing holy about agony: religious people and leaders support assisted dying too (9 September 2021). Firstly, the terms employed by Rabbi Romain and former Archbishop Carey serve to empty assisted dying of any connotations other than one of being a professional, medical procedure. Yet, upon more considered thought, there is no reason to medicalise or sanitise assisted dying or even to call it assisted dying in the first place as opposed to, say, facilitated murder or suicide
