This Holocaust Memorial Day, as we commemorate the 75thanniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we confront one of the greatest evils that humankind has ever inflicted. The mechanised slaughter of Jews, planned, plotted and executed by the Nazis, remains a stain on the moral conscience of the world. But there is the risk that when we look at black and white photographs of something that happened to other people, in another time, in a different place and at the hand of people with whom we feel we have nothing in common, we might think of antisemitism as a relic of the past.

A man convicted five times of exposing himself in public was arraigned Wednesday on another charge of public indecency for allegedly masturbating on the steps of a Northwest Portland synagogue. Authorities say they received a call that Alan Bruce Robinson, 48, had pulled down his pants at Congregation Beth Israel on Tuesday afternoon while children were attending an afterschool program at a charter school on the property near Northwest 19th Avenue between Flanders and Glisan streets. A synagogue in Alexandria, Egypt, is set to reopen Friday following the completion of multi-million-dollar renovations of the almost two-century-old building, an Egyptian Antiquities Ministry official said. The Eliyahu Hanavi synagogue is one of two remaining Jewish houses of worship in the city that was once home to a thriving Jewish community.
