A Broward man admitted Wednesday that he planned to bomb an Aventura synagogue during Passover last year. But James Gonzalo Medina, 41, of Hollywood, has been diagnosed with a spider-like brain cyst that may have affected his conduct, according to the defense. Under an uncommon agreement between the prosecution and defense, Medina is expected to be locked up for 25 years and will spend at least the first portion of that in a prison medical ward where he can get treatment for the cyst and his mental health

Police in Philadelphia are searching for a man caught on surveillance video giving a lewd hand gesture to the camera and then urinating on the walls of a synagogue. On Sunday at about 12:30 a.m., the unknown man was seen on surveillance video approaching the front doors of the Congregation Beth Solomon, the Philadelphia Police Department said. The suspect "gave an obscene hand gesture in the direction of the camera, then began to urinate on the walls, and sidewalk directly in front of the doors of the Synagogue," police said in a statement.

A Pilsen man charged with a hate crime for defacing the Chicago Loop Synagogue in February has pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors that saw him sentenced to the two days he already served in the Cook County Jail. Stuart Wright, 32, also was ordered to pay restitution of $4,500 and must seek treatment for his diagnosed schizophrenia, according to court records and his lawyer. This is not a hate-crime issue, attorney Michael Byrne told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday.

In yet another blow to historic preservationists, a state Supreme Court judge has cleared the way for demolition of a century-old synagogue on the Upper West Side of Manhattan to make way for a new high-rise condominium, DNAinfo reports. The Congregation Shaare Zedek, which has held services in the building since 1923, sent an email to its congregants, saying that after the High Holy Days in September it would "say goodbye to our space," according to a neighbor of the of the 212 West 93rd Street structure. Shaare Zedek joins a growing list of aging buildings synagogues, parking garages, SROs, mom & pop businesses, gas stations that are being razed to feed the citys ravenous appetite for new hotels and high-end apartments.
