ADL Reports Unprecedented Rise in Antisemitic Incidents Post-Oct. 7

New York, NY, December 11, 2023 Since the Hamas massacre in Israel on Oct. 7, U.S. antisemitic incidents reached the highest number of incidents during any two-month period since ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) began tracking in 1979, according to preliminary data released today.
Between Oct. 7 and Dec. 7, ADL recorded a total of 2,031 antisemitic incidents, up from 465 incidents during the same period in 2022, representing a 337-percent increase year-over-year. This includes 40 incidents of physical assault, 337 incidents of vandalism, 749 incidents of verbal or written harassment and 905 rallies including antisemitic rhetoric, expressions of support for terrorism against the state of Israel and/or anti-Zionism. On average, over the last 61 days, Jews in America experienced nearly 34 antisemitic incidents per day.
"This terrifying pattern of antisemitic attacks has been relentless since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, with no signs of diminishing, said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO. The lid to the sewers is off, and Jewish communities all across the country are being inundated with hate. Public officials and college leaders must turn down the temperature and take clear action to show this behavior is unacceptable to prevent more violence.
The data includes one fatality that occurred at an anti-Israel protest in Los Angeles, where a Jewish man was killed after being hit in the head by a pro-Palestinian protester. There were about 250 antisemitic incidents that specifically targeted Jewish institutions such as synagogues and campus Hillels. On college and university campuses, ADL has recorded a total of 400 antisemitic incidents, compared to only 33 incidents during the same period in 2022. At least1,411 of the total incidents could be clearly linked to the Israel-Hamas war.

In addition to attacks against Jewish institutions, ADL tracked an increase in vandalism and harassment on businesses are Jewish or Israeli, such as a Dec. 3 rally in Philadelphia where a large group of protesters gathered outside a falafel shop and accused the owners of committing a genocide.
Vandalism of a Jewish business isnt political protest its antisemitism and its criminal, said Greenblatt. Boycotts have historically targeted the Jewish community at times of crisis, and its alarming that its happening again now.

Reports of antisemitic incidents across the United States have soared in the two months since the deadly Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel sparked a brutal war in the Gaza Strip, according to new data released Monday by the Anti-Defamation League. The group calls the rise "unprecedented."
Reported incidents of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate have also spiked in the U.S. over the same period, according to data from the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
The Anti-Defamation League said it recorded 2,031 antisemitic incidents nationwide between Oct. 7 and Dec. 7, which is up significantly from 465 incidents during the same two-month period in 2022. The latest numbers represent a 337% increase in reports compared with last year. It is also the highest number of any two-month period since the ADL began tracking antisemitic incidents in in 1979.
Most of the incidents at least 1,411 "could be clearly linked to the Israel-Hamas war," according to the group, which describes its mission as working to "stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all," including combatting extremism and other forms of hate both online and offline.
Antisemitic incidents recorded by the ADL over the last two months included 40 reports of physical assault, 337 reports of vandalism, 749 reports of verbal or written harassment, and 905 rallies that involved "antisemitic rhetoric, expressions of support for terrorism against the state of Israel and/or anti-Zionism," the group said, noting that Jewish people across America have experienced an average of almost 34 antisemitic incidents each day since Oct. 7.
"This terrifying pattern of antisemitic attacks has been relentless since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, with no signs of diminishing," Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL, said in a statement. "The lid to the sewers is off, and Jewish communities all across the country are being inundated with hate. The Council on American-Islamic Relations released data last week showing that it has received a "staggering" 2,171 complaints of bias incidents or requests for help between Oct. 7 and Dec. 2, amid what it called "an ongoing wave of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate."
"FromBurlington toChicago to DC and elsewhere, innocent Americans are suffering the consequences of this wave of bigotry," CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement. "Until our nation stops the violence in Gaza and rejects bigotry here in America, we fear that both Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism will continue to spin out of control."
In Burlington, Vermont, three Palestinian-American college students were shot and wounded on Nov. 25 in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime. In the Chicago area, a landlord is charged with murder and hate crimes for a stabbing thatkilled a 6-year-old Muslim boy and wounded his mother.
Protests and tensions tied to the Israel-Hamas war have divided college campuses, leadingto a congressional hearinglast week where three university presidents were grilled about how they are handling antisemitism at their schools. Claudine Gay of Harvard University, Liz Magill of the University of Pennsylvania and Sally Kornbluth of MIT testified before lawmakers who pressed them on action to condemn anti-Jewish sentiment. Magill tendered her resignation over the weekend.
The ADL's new data includes 400 incidents on college and university campuses over the last two months, compared with 33 incidents during the same period last year.
The group recorded 250 antisemitic incidents that specifically targeted Jewish institutions, like campus Hillels and synagogues.
The ADL data also noted the case of a Jewish man whosustained a head injury and died following an encounter with a pro-Palestinian demonstrator at a protest in Los Angeles last month. The other man is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter and haspleaded not guilty.
The ADL cited an increase in reports of vandalism and harassment targeting Jewish or Israeli businesses, as well, including an incident in Philadelphia earlier this month where a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters chanted outside an Israeli-Jewish owned restaurant accusing the establishment of "genocide." Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro denounced the demonstration as "a blatant act of antisemitism."

Judaism (Hebrew: Yah) is an Abrahamic, monotheistic, and ethnic religion. It comprises the collective spiritual, cultural, and legal traditions of the Jewish people,[1][2] having originated as an organized religion in the Middle East during the Bronze Age.[4] Contemporary Judaism evolved from Yahwism, the cultic religious movement of ancient Israel and Judah, around the 6th/5th century BCE,[5] and is thus considered to be one of the oldest monotheistic religions.[6][7] Religious Jews regard Judaism as their means of observing the Mosaic covenant, which was established between God and the Israelites, their ancestors.[8] Jewish religious doctrine encompasses a wide body of texts, practices, theological positions, and forms of organization.
Ethnic religion of the Jewish people
Among Judaism's core texts is the Torah, the first five books of the Tanakh, a collection of ancient Hebrew scriptures. The Tanakh, known in English as the Hebrew Bible, is also referred to as the "Old Testament" in Christianity. In addition to the original written scripture, the supplemental Oral Torah is represented by later texts, such as the Midrash and the Talmud. The Hebrew-language word torah can mean "teaching", "law", or "instruction",[9] although "Torah" can also be used as a general term that refers to any Jewish text that expands or elaborates on the original Five Books of Moses. Within Judaism, there are a variety of religious movements, most of which emerged from Rabbinic Judaism,[16] which holds that God revealed his laws and commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai in the form of both the Written and Oral Torah.[17] Historically, all or part of this assertion was challenged by various groups such as the Sadducees and Hellenistic Judaism during the Second Temple period;[19] the Karaites during the early and later medieval period; and among segments of the modern non-Orthodox denominations.[20] Some modern branches of Judaism such as Humanistic Judaism may be considered secular or nontheistic.[21][23][24] Today, the largest Jewish religious movements are Orthodox Judaism (Haredi and Modern Orthodox), Conservative Judaism, and Reform Judaism. Jews are an ethnoreligious group[43] including those born Jewish (or "ethnic Jews"), in addition to converts to Judaism. In 2021, the world Jewish population was estimated at 15.2million, or roughly 0.195% of the total world population, although religious observance varies from strict to none.[44][45] In 2021, about 45.6% of all Jews resided in Israel and another 42.1% resided in the United States and Canada, with most of the remainder living in Europe, and other groups spread throughout Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.[46]
