Ashkenazi Jews descend from 350 people, study finds

Posted By on November 2, 2023

A new study concludes that all Ashkenazi Jews can trace their ancestry to a bottleneck of just 350 individuals, dating back to between 600 and 800 years ago.

The study, published in the Nature Communications journal Tuesday, was authored by Shai Carmi, a computer science professor at Columbia University, and more than 20 medical researchers from Yale, Columbia, Yeshiva Universitys Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and other institutions.

Researchers analyzed the genomes of 128 Ashkenazi Jews and compared them to those of non-Jewish Europeans in order to determine which genetic markers are unique to Ashkenazi Jews. They found that the Ashkenazi Jews genetic similarities were so acute that one of the studys researchers, Columbia professor Itsik Peer, told the Live Science website that among Ashkenazi Jews, everyone is a 30th cousin.

The findings will enable researchers to catalog nearly all of the genetic variations from the founding population, the studys authors said. Such thorough genetic cataloging could help clinicians interpret individual genetic mutations, improve disease mapping and provide insight into the histories of Middle Eastern and European populations, the study said.

Thecatalog of complete Ashkenazi Jewish genomes should help identify the disease-causing mutations that the progenitors of Ashkenazi Jewry they passed on.Until now, data has only been available for a small subset of common Ashkenazi DNA markers about one in every 3,000 letters of DNA.The findings are also expected to help with disease research in other ethnic groups.

Our study is the first full DNA sequence dataset available for Ashkenazi Jewish genomes, said Itzik Peer, an Israeli computer scientist at Columbia University, who led the study. With this comprehensive catalog of mutations present in the Ashkenazi Jewish population, we will be able to more effectively map disease genes onto the genome and thus gain a better understanding of common disorders. We see this study serving as a vehicle for personalized medicine and a model for researchers working with other populations.

Ashkenazi Jews are known to have origins in the Levant, which Israel is smack dab inthe middle of. But exactly whoEuropean Ashkenazi Jews are has long been debated. An analysis of the gene database shows that the original Ashkenazi Jews were about half European and half Middle Eastern. They lived in the medieval era, about 600 to 800 years ago, according to the analysis and numbered just 350 or so people.

Our analysis shows that Ashkenazi Jewish medieval founders were ethnically admixed, with origins in Europe and in the Middle East, roughly in equal parts, said Shai Carmi, a post-doctoral scientist who works with Peer and conducted the analysis. [The] data are more comprehensive than what was previously available, and we believe the data settle the dispute regarding European and Middle Eastern ancestry in Ashkenazi Jews.

The analysis also suggested that todays Europeans are descended primarily from migrants from the Middle East after the last ice age, about 20,000 years ago, not from the first humans to arrive to the continent about 40,000 years ago. The researchers are now looking into where the Middle Eastern and European Jews first met and who their closest descendants are today.

Because the Ashkenazi community started out so small, and remained genetically isolated, it developed a higher load of disease-causing mutations. Even today, Ashkenazi Jews are known to be at higher risk for many diseases, including breast and ovarian cancer and Tay-Sachs disease. But many potentially disease-causing Ashkenazi mutations remain unknown.

To address this problem, Peer and a team of researchers at the Ashkenazi Genome Consortium (TAGC) did high-depth sequencing of the Ashkenazi genomes. Finding that the genomes had almost 50 percent more mutations than did European samples on average, they compiled a comprehensive catalog of genetic mutations found among Ashkenazi Jews.

The catalog is already proving useful for carrier testing, the genetic analyses prospective parents undergo to see what diseases they risk passing onto future children. They are also working to sequence some 500 more Ashkenazi genomes to further strengthen the catalog.

TAGC advances the goal of bringing personal genomics to the clinic, as it tells the physician whether a mutation in a patients genome is shared by healthy individuals, and can alleviate concerns that it is causing disease, said Lencz. Without our work, a patients genome sequence is much harder to interpret, and more prone to create false alarms. We have eliminated two thirds of these false alarms.

By revealing genetic information unique to Ashkenazi Jews, the catalog should also allow the pinpointing of genes behind more of the diseases that plague the population. The researchers are already studying specific Ashkenazi diseases to this end, including schizophrenia, Parkinsons disease, Crohns disease, and cancer, as well as other traits, such as longevity. The researchers expect many of these medical insights to be relevant to the general population as well.

Cooper Union protest proves lefty Jew-hate is institutional

Posted By on October 29, 2023

Leftists love to commit mob violence under the cover of legitimate protest: Witness the pack of pro-Palestinian thugs allegedly protesting against Zionism who stormed the library at Manhattans Cooper Union.

The Hamas-lovers began their protest outside as part of a faculty-blessed walkout.

But then, yelling and carrying signs that read Zionism Hands Off Our Universities, they decided to take it indoors and breezed past school security.

No challenge, when the mob reportedly numbered about 100, against only a dozen school security officers.

They were seemingly on their way to the school presidents office to demand she denounce Israels justified counterattacks on Gaza after the Hamas atrocities launched from there.

But, surprise surprise, like many other lefty mobs, they turned their anger away from the powerful and directed it at the powerless.

In this case, Jewish students who happened to be in the library at the time.

The protesters banged on the doors and reportedly shouted antisemitic rhetoric.

What does a random assortment of Jewish students have to do with a private universitys official policy statements?

Follow along with The Posts live blog for the latest on Hamas attack on Israel

Pretty unclear to anyone not brain-poisoned by the lefts institutional Jew-hatred.

But the ugly affair is proof positive that Zionist is now officially the lefty word for Jew.

The students stood their ground, despite an administrators offer of escort off campus, and the security staff locked the library doors which shows that the school understood exactly what was going on.

Yet the response saw no arrests made, and no summons given, despite the NYPDs presence during the entire incident.

One student claimed the school specifically told police not to get involved.

So these goons were enough of a threat that the school offered students a private escort to get away and locked doors against their entry, but not enough to demand police intervention?

Such administrative winking at mob tactics is as disgusting as the tactics themselves.

Coopers president, Laura Sparks, issued an empty message that night that boils down to we did nothing wrong. Pathetic.

The protest organizers and Cooper Union owe massive apologies to the schools students, Jewish and otherwise.

But the schools so far shamefully silent on the real issues.

So no bets on when it will show the least bit of spine.

ADL Records Dramatic Increase in U.S. Antisemitic Incidents Following …

Posted By on October 27, 2023

New York, NY, October 25, 2023 Since the Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7, ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) has recorded a significant spike in antisemitic incidents across the United States. Preliminary data from ADL Center on Extremism indicates that reported incidents of harassment, vandalism and assault increased by 388 percent over the same period last year.

ADL recorded a total of 312 antisemitic incidents between Oct. 7-23, 2023, 190 of which were directly linked to the war in Israel and Gaza. By comparison, during the same period in 2022, ADL received preliminary reports of 64 incidents, including four that were Israel-related. An interactive map plotting where incidents have occurred in October 2023 can be found here.

ADL also tracked anti-Israel rallies since Oct. 7, at least 109 of which ADL found explicit or strong implicit support for Hamas and/or violence against Jews in Israel. These 109 are included in ADLs tally of antisemitic incidents.

When conflict erupts in Israel, antisemitic incidents soon follow in the U.S. and globally, said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO. From white supremacists in California displaying antisemitic banners on highway overpasses to radical anti-Zionists harassing Jewish people because of their real or perceived support for the Jewish state, we are witnessing a disturbing rise in antisemitic activity here while the war rages overseas.

Here is a sampling of incidents reported across the country:

ADL also recorded a nearly 1,000-percent increase in the daily average of violent messages mentioning Jews and Israel in white supremacist and right-wing extremist channels on the messaging platform Telegram in the days following the massacre in Israel.

It is incumbent on all leaders, from political leaders to CEOs to university presidents, to forcefully and unequivocally condemn antisemitism and terrorism, said Greenblatt. This isnt hard. Words matter, and while the war in Gaza escalates, we encourage all those in positions of power to use their platforms to condemn hate and terrorism, wherever it occurs.

The rise in antisemitic incidents has not been limited to the U.S. In France, the Minister of Interior announced on Monday that 588 antisemitic incidents had been reported to police, resulting in 336 arrests. In the UK, London police said that there were 218 antisemitic hate crimes reported from October 1-18, over 13 times greater than the same period last year. In Germany, antisemitism monitoring organization RIAS reported a 240-percent increase in antisemitic incidents since Oct 7, compared to the same time period last year. There have also been antisemitic incidents in other countries in Europe, as well as in Latin America, North Africa, Australia and elsewhere.

In light of these alarming trends, ADL is calling on governments, political leaders and those in positions of influence around the world to:
