I dont know what happened to him. Alleged Spring Hill neo-Nazi held without bail. – Tampa Bay Times

Posted By on February 29, 2020

TAMPA The alleged Spring Hill neo-Nazi who the government says was part of a nationwide plot to intimidate and threaten journalists and people of color was ordered to remain in jail Thursday without bail.

Tyler Parker-Dipeppe, 20, was booked in the Pinellas County Jail after a first appearance Thursday in federal court in Tampa.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas G. Wilson found probable cause to believe he committed a crime described in a criminal complaint and ordered detention pending further court proceedings in Seattle, where the case originated.

Parker-Dipeppe is one of four people federal agents say engaged in the plot, which involved delivering posters that bore swastikas and threatening language. All four face a charge of conspiracy.

I dont know what happened to him, his father, Henry Dipeppe, said on the telephone from New Jersey. I didnt raise him that way. He wasnt raised in a house of hate. He made a stupid mistake. Hes just a kid. Hes 20-years-old.

Federal prosecutors said the four were part of Atomwaffen Division, an organization that achieved notoriety after one of their former members was accused of murdering two of his roommates in a New Tampa townhouse.

The latest criminal case involved four people in different states who prosecutors said conspired online to threaten specific people. The targets included the editor of a Jewish publication, two people associated with the Anti-Defamation League, a Seattle journalist and a Tampa journalist.

The Tampa journalist is not identified in the criminal complaint. While under surveillance in late January, Parker-Dipeppe and another person visited what they thought was the journalists home and affixed a poster to the front of it. The poster featured swastikas and bold text that read WE ARE WATCHING WE ARE NOONE WE ARE EVERYONE WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE DO NOT F--K WITH US.

The bottom featured a hazard symbol often included on Atomwaffen materials, and the words YOU HAVE BEEN VISITED BY YOUR LOCAL NAZIS.

The other men named in the complaint were Cameron Brandon Shea, 24, of Redmond, Wash.; Caleb Cole, 24, of Montgomery, Texas; and Johnny Roman Garza, 20, of Queen Creek, Ariz.

Parker-Dipeppe has roots in New Jersey, but now lives in Spring Hill. A person who identified himself as his stepfather declined to comment when reached via phone late Wednesday. The owner of a Spring Hill home listed as Parker-Dipeppes address hung up when a reporter called Thursday morning.

Mark Remley, the father of one of his friends, said Parker-Dipeppe told him on Monday that hed recently left two groups, but Remley didnt know if they were hate groups. Remley considers him a third son, and he couldnt believe the allegations that hate had driven him into neo-Nazi circles.

His mother was putting him through college, Remley said, and the 20-year-old wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement.

He is a foolish, foolish kid looking for somebody to accept him, he said

Erik Rietheimer, who graduated high school with him in 2017 in New Jersey, said Parker-Dipeppe started posting hate-filled messages about a year ago on social media. Those postings shocked his circle of friends.

Those were his views and he was allowed to share them, Rietheimer said on the telephone from New Jersey. It all happened in the last year. After that, we all stopped talking to him.

Rietheimer said Parker-DiPeppe didnt get involved with sports or other extracurricular activities in high school and worked at a pizza shop while in school and after graduating.

The criminal complaint mentions another Atomwaffen member with whom Parker-Dipeppe is said to have collaborated. But that person has not been arrested. He is referenced in the complaint only by the name Lazarus, a moniker he used to communicate in an encrypted internet chat with other group members.

Parker-Dipeppe used the name Azazel, the complaint states. It describes Lazarus as the leader of the Florida portion of the effort, with Parker-Dipeppe as the second.

In the chats, they spoke with Cole, Shea, Garza, and others about the plot, which they dubbed Operation Erste Sale." The latter part of the name, translated from German, means First Pillar.

Cole is described as one of two men who took over the leadership of Atomwaffen after the groups founder, Brandon Russell, was sent to federal prison for five years after he pleaded guilty to explosives charges.

Russell was a roommate of Devon Arthurs, another one-time Atomwaffen devotee, who in May 2017 was accused of murdering their other two roommates with an assault rifle in the New Tampa townhouse the four shared. Police found a collection of explosives and bomb-making materials in the townhouse, which were said to have belonged to Russell.

The murders generated a flood of media attention to the group, much of which Cole was unhappy with, according to the complaint. He and other Atomwaffen members began speaking of taking aggressive action against media figures, according to the complaint.

Another Atomwaffen member suggested using a list of members of the Society of Professional Journalists to identify potential targets. Lazarus shared that he had identified three targets, one of whom was Jewish, according to the complaint.

One partial chat transcript quoted in the complaint details a discussion the group had about whether it would be better to mail the posters to their targets or deliver them in person. Lazarus wrote that it would be less threatening to mail them.

I like the dangerous side more, Parker-Dipeppe said in a reply.

They mentioned checking houses for security and measures to avoid getting caught.

We know but you also have to understand we all know what we signed up for, Lazarus wrote. So I say we go (through) with the plan but if a house has (too) much security we mail that poster to that house.

It will look suspicious especially on me and Lazs end driving with a New Jersey plated car and parking somewhere random," Parker-Dipeppe wrote. However weve gotten away with it in the past too.

On Feb. 20, 1939, New York Citys Madison Square Garden was the site of a gathering of 20,000 passionate, like-minded Americans.

There were flags and speeches and music and much pomp and pageantry.

The object of their affection?

The Third Reich.

It seems jaw-dropping in 2020 that one of Americas most iconic venues would have opened its doors to such a reprehensible event.

The whole thing sounds like an elaborate prank, except that it has been preserved in filmmaker Marshall Currys 2017 documentary, A Night at the Garden.

The unedited film runs only seven minutes, but thats long enough to underscore the depths of our denial. It also proves we know a lot less about ourselves than we thought.

Its a sight to behold. The stage is festooned in American flags. At its center is a three-story portrait of George Washington along with a platoon of uniformed drummer boys, and all of it framed by two massive Nazi banners.

As keynote speaker Fritz Kuhn goes on a screed about Jews, Isidore Greenbaum, a plumbers helper from Brooklyn, vaults onstage to protest and immediately is pummeled. Police have to come to Greenbaums rescue.

If youre thinking A Night in the Garden couldnt happen in this day and age, it already did, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the same year the film was released.

If youre hoping Charlottesville was an aberration, youre dangerously behind the curve.

According to a new report the Anti-Defamation League has released, the presence of hate-group material has doubled on college campuses, from 1,214 reported cases in 2018 to 2,713 incidents in 2019, the highest recorded in the ADLs existence.

Materials range from stickers to fliers to posters, some of which mimic the patriotic recruitment posters created during World War I. They have usurped such formerly innocuous words as heritage, culture, identity and American.

Its all designed to skew peoples patriotism and exacerbate their sense of loss and powerlessness.

They have fertile ground. The economy in Ohio isnt as robust as is being touted. A full 25% of the states children live in poverty.

There are counties where coroners are running out of room to store the bodies of people who have died from overdoses.

Mix anger with despair and resentment and you have yourself a bumper crop of people ripe for radicalization and recruitment.

The Southern Poverty Law Centers 2019 Year in Hate and Extremism report found the number of known hate groups operating in the region has grown from 42 to 49; with 36 in Ohio and 13 in Kentucky.

Nationwide, there is a record-high 1,020 such groups, the SPLC reports.

If there is a spark of redemption, it is that an unrepentant Greenbaum was charged $25 for disturbing the peace. Fritz Kuhn later was convicted of embezzlement, stripped of his citizenship and deported back to Germany during World War II. From there, his story ends.

But his spirit is alive and well.

Bloomberg’s Money and the anti-Semitism Defense – The Jewish Press – JewishPress.com

{Originally posted to the JNS website}

At a time of a rising tide of anti-Semitism sweeping across the globe, groups tasked with monitoring and combating Jew-hatred are needed more than ever. Yet the Anti-Defamation League continues to sabotage the effort to build a consensus against hate by miring the once universally respected organization in partisan politics.

The latest instance of the ADL undermining the fight against hate took place this past week when its national director and CEO Jonathan Greenblatt accused Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) of using an anti-Semitic canard when attacking Democratic presidential contender Michael Bloomberg.

Cruzs supposed offense was to tweet a reaction to a Bloomberg news article that declared the Democratic contest for presidential candidacy to be a two-man race for the nomination. The notion of a media outlet owned by one of the candidates commenting on the Democratic nomination in such a way as to please its boss is pretty ridiculous. Cruz responded by simply quipping, Its almost as if he owns the media.

Greenblatt responded by saying: Is it anti-Semitic to point out that Mike Bloomberg owns a news service? No. Is it anti-Semitic to accuse a Jewish person of controlling the media? Absolutely yes. This assertion goes far beyond the facts and perpetuates harmful anti-Semitic tropes.

This is utterly disingenuous, and Greenblatt knows it. Cruz deserves an apology, and though I doubt he will get one, this episode is another object lesson in how the ADL leader has basically trashed the reputation of his organization in service to his openly partisan leanings.

You dont have to support Cruzs brand of conservative politics or even like the abrasive Texan to understand that he was clearly being ironic and not invoking one of the standard themes of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. And thats not just because Cruz is a dedicated supporter of Israel, and a politician with a long and honorable record as an outspoken foe of anti-Semitism.

What Michael Bloomberg is doing in this election season is more or less exactly what Cruz has described. Hes not merely using the media outlet he already owns in an effort to become president; hes spending money in order to achieve his goal in a manner that is both unprecedented and on a scale that dwarfs anything political observers have ever seen tried.

Even before his first appearance in a presidential debate this week in Nevada, Bloomberg had purchased approximately $350 million in television commercials promoting his candidacy. And with $56 billion at his disposal, who knows what the final tally will add up to, whether or not he succeeds in being elected president.

This kind of spending from a candidate who has avoided taking part in the early voting states where retail politics is required is, at best, unseemly. So its hardly out of order for supporters of his competitors to cry foul about the way Bloomberg appears to be trying to buy the presidency.

What even many of those who think Bloomberg was a pretty good mayor dont know is that part of the reason he was able to sustain himself in office was his habit of buying support or sometimes the silence of activist groups and politicians. As The New York Times reported, Bloombergs tactic was efficient and successful. Money may not be able to buy him love. But it does purchase acquiescence, and thats how the billionaire was able to escape much of the trouble that plagued his less-well-heeled predecessor Rudy Giuliani when pursuing some of the same policies.

As those who watched Bloombergs disastrous first debate performance have noted, even all his money may not make him ready for the intense scrutiny and pressure that is singular to a presidential race.

But the one aspect of this subject thats not fair game is his identity as a Jew.

Those who would invoke anti-Semitic canards about Jews buying influence in order to denounce Bloomberg are spreading hate. Still, the fact that he is Jewish doesnt mean that were supposed to ignore the way he is attempting to use his billions to effectively own the airwaves. Like left-wing billionaire George Soros, Bloomberg is a potential target for anti-Semitic hate. But theres nothing inappropriate or hateful about pointing out that both Soros and Bloomberg are using their wealth to achieve a political purpose. Thats what Cruz was getting at, and its wrong to call him an anti-Semite for doing so.

The ADL used to be the gold standard when it comes to anti-Semitism monitoring. But Greenblatt, a former Clinton and Obama administration staffer, has turned his bully pulpit into a political soapbox in the last three years as he has repeatedly deployed ADLs reputation in efforts to wrongly besmirch President Donald Trump and other Republicans as aiding anti-Semites. Greenblatt has also involved the group in purely partisan fights like Supreme Court nominations and attacked the reputations of figures like Secretary of State Mike Pompeowho, like Cruz, is a friend of Israel and the Jewish peoplein order to play wingman for Democratic attack dogs. Indeed, hes gone so far off the path of nonpartisanship it may be that, as Liel Liebovitz noted in Tablet, he no longer even knows what anti-Semitism is.

Perhaps, like Justice Potter Stewarts famous line about pornography, when it comes to anti-Semitism, we know it when we see it. Suffice it to say that when people who hate Jews and Israel talk about Jews buying influenceas Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has doneits obviously anti-Semitism. When someone who supports Israel like Cruz simply notes that an individual is trying to act as if he owns the media, its notand that has nothing to do with their party affiliations.

By confusing the issue, Greenblatt is destroying the ADLs ability to do its job. Its long past time for the media and the Jewish community to stop treating him as the arbiter of anti-Semitism. In doing so, were not merely enabling his unfair political attacks; were also making it more difficult to identify the hate that the ADL is supposed to be fighting.

New US coronavirus case may be 1st from unknown origin

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) A new coronavirus case in California could be the first in the U.S. that has no known connection to travel abroad or another known case, a possible sign the virus is spreading in a U.S. community, health officials said.

California officials said the person is a resident of Solano County, northeast of San Francisco, and is getting medical care in Sacramento County. They said they have begun the process of tracking down people who the patient has been in contact with, a process known as contact tracing.

The patient was brought to UC Davis Medical Center from another Northern California hospital on Feb. 19 but it was four days before the CDC heeded a request to test the patient for COVID-19, according to an email sent to employees Wednesday by the hospitals interim CEO, Brad Simmons, and David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health.

The patient arrived on a ventilator and special protection orders were issued because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition, according to the email sent to employees.

The hospital asked the CDC to test for the coronavirus but testing was delayed until Sunday since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19, the email said.

Solano County health officials said in a statement Thursday they are working with local, state and federal officials to identify people who may have been exposed to person infected in the county.

NEW YORK (AP) About 4 in 10 American adults are obese, and nearly 1 in 10 is severely so, government researchers said Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention findings come from a 2017-18 health survey that measures height and weight. More than 5,000 U.S. adults took part.

The survey found that the obesity rate was 42% higher than the 40% found in a similar 2015-16 study. The severe obesity rate was more than 9% in the new survey, up from the 8% figure in the previous one.

Those increases arent considered statistically significant: The survey numbers are small enough that theres a mathematical chance the rates didnt truly rise.

But its clear that adult obesity rates are trending up, said the CDCs Cynthia Ogden, one of the reports authors.

A half-century ago, about 1 in 100 American adults were severely obese. Now its 10 times more common.

The obesity rate has risen about 40% in the last two decades.

The findings suggest that more Americans will get diabetes, heart disease and cancer, said Dr. William Dietz, a George Washington University obesity expert.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsins latest mass shooting, which left six people dead at one of the worlds largest breweries, appears to have done little in the politically polarized state to budge Republicans who expanded access to guns over the past decade.

Milwaukee police say a 51-year-old employee of Molson Coors Brewing Co., which for decades operated as Miller Brewing, opened fire on his co-workers on Wednesday afternoon, killing five before he turned the gun on himself. It was the nations fourth mass killing of the year.

The shooting took place less than 3 miles from the venue that will host the Democratic National Convention in five months. Democratic presidential candidates weighed in on the shooting, with several reiterating their calls for tougher gun laws. President Donald Trump called the shooting a terrible thing, but he and other Republicans, including in Wisconsin, did not advocate for any changes to the law.

Trump narrowly won Wisconsin in 2016 and defeating him in the key swing state in November is a priority for Democrats. They see gun control as a winning issue, with numerous polls showing broad public support for the bills that Democratic Gov. Tony Evers has unsuccessfully touted to the GOP-controlled Legislature.

Evers told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that hes pessimistic the latest shooting will cause Republicans to reconsider their position against stricter gun laws.

BALTIMORE (AP) The disgraced former mayor of Baltimore was sentenced to three years in federal prison Thursday for arranging fraudulent sales of her self-published childrens books to nonprofits and foundations to promote her political career and fund her run for the citys highest office.

Catherine Pugh spoke through tears for about 10 minutes before her sentencing in federal court in Baltimore. The 69-year-old veteran Democratic politician apologized and said that no one is more disappointed than me.

The scandal has shaken Marylands largest city, which for years has struggled with grinding poverty, political mismanagement, record crime rates and police abuses that led to massive riots. And it made a mockery of Pughs inaugural promise to restore trust in Baltimores leaders.

Pugh was elected mayor in 2016 and resigned under pressure in May as authorities investigated bulk sales of her Healthy Holly paperbacks, which netted her hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Federal authorities accused Pugh, 69, of double selling the books, keeping many for self-promotion purposes and failing to deliver them to institutions they were purchased for, including the Baltimore City Public Schools. Pugh used the proceeds to fund straw donations to her mayoral campaign and buy a new house.

White supremacists and other far-right extremists killed at least 38 people in the U.S. in 2019, the sixth deadliest year for violence by all domestic extremists since 1970, according to a report issued Wednesday by a group that fights anti-semitism.

The Anti-Defamation League counted a total of 42 domestic extremism-related slayings last year. The gunman who shot and killed 22 people in August 2019 at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, accounted for more than half of them. Patrick Crusius, the suspect in that shooting rampage, is accused of targeting Mexicans at the store and faces federal hate crime charges.

Only the Oklahoma City bombing by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols in 1995 and the Pulse nightclub shooting by Omar Mateen in 2016 were deadlier attacks by domestic extremists in the past 50 years, according to the New York City-based ADL.

The ADLs annual Murder and Extremism report says domestic extremists of all kinds killed 42 people in a total of 17 separate incidents last year, down from 53 killings in 2018 but higher than the 41 in 2017.

This is part of a general trend of increasingly lethal attacks by domestic extremists in the United States, the report says. Four of the deadliest years for extremist-related violence have occurred in the past five years, according to the ADL.

Right-wing extremists killed at least 330 people over the past decade, accounting for 76% of all domestic extremist-related killings.

Reuters

Domestic extremists in the United States most them from the far-right killed 435 people in the decade that ended this past December.

According to a new study by the Anti-Defamation League, half of those murders were committed to further the killers ideology. The other half were murders that were committed by extremists but not necessarily for ideological reasons.

The report defines domestic extremists as American citizens or long-term residents with connections to some sort of extreme movement or cause.

According to the ADL, 90% of those extremist murderers this year came from the right. But the report noted that because right-wing extremists tend to be easily identifiable, it is likely that non-ideological murders committed by extremists other than white supremacists are underrepresented in ADLs data.

In terms of ideologically-motivated killings, 2019 was the third-worst year of the past decade, with 29 ideologically motivated murders by extremists. Those include 22 people killed by a white supremacist shooter at a Walmart in El Paso, four people killed in a December shooting that ended at a Jersey City kosher supermarket, and the synagogue shooting in Poway, California, in which one woman was killed.

[E]xtremist killings can have a disproportionate effect on communities, especially when they take the form of a hate crime or a terrorist attack, read the report. It is important to remember that extremist murders represent merely the tip of a pyramid of extremist violence in the United States.

The deadliest year of the past decade in terms of domestic ideologically motivated murders was 2016, which saw 58 such murders. That includes the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which was carried out by an Islamist extremist and killed 49 people.

Keeping antisemitism afloat at the Aalst carnival – The Jerusalem Post

Posted By on February 29, 2020

Antisemitism was proudly on display this week. It wasnt violent, but it certainly wasnt subtle. It was literally the ugly face of ancient Jew-hatred. The carnival in the Belgium city of Aalst, some 30 kilometers northwest of Brussels, defiantly went ahead on Sunday an annual, three-day tradition of which the city is proud. The good people of Aalst who participated or attended as spectators lent their support to bigotry and xenophobia. And they did so knowingly.Last year, the Aalst carnival, which has been celebrated for more than 600 years, lost its UNESCO cultural heritage status over the recurrence of racist and antisemitic representation. Rather than drop the parades antisemitic elements, the city decided to shed its status on UNESCOs Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Dismissing the criticism, the mayor reportedly said: Let Aalst be Aalst. Accordingly, this years parade included more and worse antisemitic tropes and themes than in the past. And thats saying a lot.How low can the #aalstcarnival organizers go? Extremely low, it appears, tweeted Israeli Foreign Ministry director-general Yuval Rotem. The countrys ambassador to Belgium, Emmanuel Nahshon, went to the scene of the crime to serve as a first-hand witness. The photos coming out of Aalst did not make a pretty picture. There were rabbis with humongous fake noses, some standing next to fake bars of gold. Jews and money: Get it? There were also men dressed in the typical suits of ultra-Orthodox Jews but with the body of ants. It was apparently a Flemish play on words for the Wailing Wall, the holy site known to Jews as the Western Wall or Kotel. One float with an image of the Wailing Wall, appeared with the slogan: Well, you would also complain if theyd cut your penis. Some revelers were dressed in Nazi uniforms, a protest against the UNESCO ruling. In other words, these tropes and themes were intentional. If last years caricature Jewish mannequins with bags of money and rats on their shoulders could somehow be ascribed to ignorance or a misunderstanding, this year even that excuse disappeared. Mayor Christoph DHaese, a member of the nationalist New Flemish Alliance Party, tried to maintain the pretense that this was legitimate freedom of expression and that the carnival spirit was to mock and satirize current events. Britains Boris Johnson, who led Brexit, was also bashed, for example. So much fun, but not so innocent. If someone dies, it wont be of laughter.Sadly, Aalst is not alone. Other European cities believe it is their right and cultural heritage to demonize Jews. Last year, Polish authorities reportedly opened a criminal investigation into an Easter holiday ritual in the small town of Pruchnik, in which local residents including children beat and burned an effigy of Judas, represented by a stereotypical Jew complete with hooked nose, black hat and sidelocks. This week, at the Campo de Criptana Carnival, in Spains Castilla-La Mancha region, revelers dressed as Nazis and a group of women wearing Israeli flags accompanied a float sporting a menorah and two crematoria chimneys. The El Chaparral Cultural Association, which put on the Shoah-themed display, reportedly meant it to be a tribute to the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust. What was going up in smoke in those chimneys? The demonization of Jews is dangerous; the trivialization of the Holocaust is its prop. While the Aalst carnival floats were blatant in their anti-Jewish sentiments, there was something covert and even more corrupting to be found where you might least expect it in British high school textbooks. As The Jerusalem Posts Jeremy Sharon reported last Friday, Understanding History: Key Stage 3, published by Hodder Education, has a section on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the War of Independence in which students were asked to reflect on the question: How could it be argued that the creation of Israel was a long-term cause of the 9/11 attacks?A better question to ponder is: How could it be argued that anti-Israel conspiracy theories are the long-term cause of antisemitic attacks? The short answer? Very easily.Following the complaints after the Impact-SE education watchdog group among others broke the story, the publishers tweeted an apology: We appreciate the phrasing of the question is not as precise as it might have been, and we are very sorry for any offense this has caused. Hodder Education said it had removed the book from sale, will review the content and will then reissue a revised edition. I cant wait to see that. Almost nothing surprises me anymore. The question remains: Is antisemitic sentiment in the form of anti-Israel attacks spreading from Palestinian textbooks to British and European books or vice versa?BELGIAN PRIME Minister Sophie Wilms was among those who strongly condemned the floats and costumes in the Aalst parade. But Belgiums relationship with Israel is troubled. The tiny, divided country is home to the European Union. It is also currently a member of the United Nations Security Council, which it has been chairing throughout the month of February. Tension between Israel and the EU increased late last year when the Court of Justice of the European Union delivered a binding interpretation of the EUs rules on labeling the origin of products. This singled out Jewish-owned companies over the Green Line, providing a blacklist for potential boycotters and a deterrent to international companies doing business there. The Geneva-based United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights followed in the EUs discriminatory footsteps two weeks ago.European support and funding for organizations that delegitimize Israel, including some linked to terrorist organizations, continue to cause Israel concern. In a diplomatic spat with Belgium earlier this month, Jerusalem reprimanded the deputy ambassador after the Belgians invited an adviser for an NGO with ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (a designated terrorist organization) to brief the UN Security Council. Belgium then called in Ambassador Nahshon to protest the protest. Methinks they doth protest too much. At least Belgium later revoked the invitation to Brad Parker, a senior adviser for policy and advocacy at Defense for Children International Palestine. For once, the antisemitic/anti-Israel show did not go on.Belgium professes to worry about the welfare of the worlds children, but this apparently does not extend to Israelis even those within the Green Line. While Aalst was maintaining its traditions, members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza were keeping up with theirs: The PIJ launched more than 100 rockets and mortars on southern Israel on Sunday and Monday. Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon released footage of the tiny babies in the neonatal intensive care unit being rushed to the hospitals rocket-proof area, fighting for their lives on every front. A video went viral of a mother crouching over her kids outdoors, protecting their bodies with her own, as red alert sirens wailed. There is a direct line between the Aalst pageantry and the attacks on Israel. For centuries, all over Europe, Jews were accused of poisoning wells and killing Christian children to use their blood. Today the blood libels continue: The poisoning of minds particularly of young children against Jews.Am I worried? Of course. I dont rely on Hodder Education-style textbooks: I learned lessons about Jewish history that 75 years after the liberation of Auschwitz too many are dismissing, trivializing or distorting beyond recognition. On the other hand, in less than two weeks Jews will celebrate the Purim festival marking the survival of the Jewish people as recorded in the Book of Esther, when the adviser of the Persian king plotted to kill every single Jew in the empire. That was in the 4th century BCE. Today, it is still marked by, among other things, giving gifts to the poor and holding special parades in fancy costumes. Aalst might be proud of its 600-year-old traditions, but the Jews have been around for much, much longer. Our celebrations dont have to put Aalsts parades to shame: They do that all by themselves.liat@jpost.com

Lawsuit accuses Trump and other US officials of crimes against Palestinians – Arabnews

Posted By on February 29, 2020

WASHINGTON: A federal lawsuit filed in Washington, DC, last week by 13 Palestinian and American activists accuses US President Donald Trump and his Middle East adviser Jared Kushner of violating Palestinian civil and human rights. Also named in the suit are Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; Miriam Adelson, the wife of billionaire settler financier Sheldon Adelson; Israeli lobby group the The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC); and 13 others.Attorney Martin McMahon said the action targets Trumps Deal of the Century, along with laws introduced in 28 American states that illegally deny Americans the right to boycott Israel.Filed on behalf of 13 plaintiffs, including Palestinians living in America and in occupied Palestine, the lawsuit argues they were stripped of their legal and civil rights not only Israel but by American officials and activists empowered by a biased media and political system.I know the system in this country is biased against Palestinian rights, but I also know that the rule of law defends those rights, McMahon told Arab News. With the power of the rule of law, we will prevail.McMahons lawsuit was filed during African American heritage month, which recognizes the civil rights struggles of black Americans who were enslaved and segregated under illegal laws and policies that stripped them of land rights, denied them citizenship and treated them as second-class citizens. These are all crimes that Palestinians are subjected to inside and outside of Israel as a result of American financial and political support. The Palestinian cause is very similar to the legal fight by African Americans and by Native Americans, said McMahon. The Nuremberg Trials of 1945 defined that war crimes were illegal, and that wanton destruction of property, extrajudicial killings, collective punishment and land theft are war crimes that fall under the umbrage of the Alien Tort Statute, which is what we use to defend these victims. There is no statute of limitations on these kinds of crimes. The Alien Tort Statute is a US Federal law, adopted in 1789, that gives the federal courts jurisdiction to hear lawsuits filed by non-US citizens relating to actions committed in violation of international law.McMahon confirmed that his 13 clients include American citizens and non-citizens who are living or lived under Israeli occupation. Among them are three members of the Dawabsheh family, including an infant, who were murdered in a July 2015 arson attack in Hebron by Israeli settlers. Several other family members were seriously injured. Although the three Israeli Jewish arsonists were arrested, their actions were enabled by Israels government, the lawsuit argues. The plaintiffs also include Palestinian activists Ahed Al-Tamimi, her father Bassim Al-Tamimi and their extended family, who have been harassed, beaten and jailed by Israeli forces in the village of Nabi Salih for protesting against Israels illegal policies. Their family lands were illegally confiscated by Israel.Others are relatives of Abdul Rahman Barghouthi, who was murdered in Dec. 2016 by Israeli soldiers as he returned to his village, Aboud, near the Israeli settlement of Halamish. The Israeli media claimed Barghouthi attacked and injured an Israeli soldier but witnesses said he was killed in cold blood as a result of long-standing tensions between the village and the armed settlers.McMahon explained that the lawsuit is based on four main principles.Since 1948, (the) defendants have denationalized and dehumanized the Palestinian population, discriminating against them and denying them their legal rights, he said. Individuals who contribute money or political support to this illegal system are accomplices. We are suing all of the Americans who have aided and abetted the denationalization of the Palestinian people. The second principle, he said, is that Americans have a right to choose to boycott Israel over its apartheid practices that violate international law. The third seeks to declare Netanyahu, who has been Israels prime minister for a total of 16 years, a war criminal based on his policies in Gaza and the West Bank. The fourth principle, McMahon said, involves the illegality of the Trump administrations Deal of the Century, which seeks to give Israel personal property and lands owned by Palestinians and occupied in conflict. That is illegal under both international law and American law, he said. And because Americans are engaged in this with Israelis, it makes them liable for these actions.McMahon said that despite the difficulty of challenging Israel in the pro-Israel American judicial system, he has had some success; most recently in a lawsuit filed in 2016 that also involves the Al-Tamimi family, American officials, and individuals and companies that have financed or support Israels illegal settlements. That lawsuit also addresses an injustice against the Palestinians, and it was initially thrown out by the Federal Court, McMahon said. But it was reinstated by the US Federal Appeals Court because we have the weight of the law on our side.McMahon said Jewish Americans have filed many lawsuits against Palestinian organizations and individuals asserting terrorism, violence and loss of property rights, but the time in which US courts only entertain pro-Israel lawsuits has ended. My law firm wont sit back, he said. We will defend the legal rights of Palestinians or Americans. Anyone who feels they have been denied their rights should contact my office and I will include them in the lawsuit. The other 13 defendants in the lawsuit are AIPAC officials Brian Shankman and Howard Kohr, international attorney Gustaff Cardelius, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, housing investor Daniel Gilbert, former Senate Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Trump legal adviser and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Trump adviser Jason Greenblatt, New York City Council member Donald Hikind, former Arkansas Governor Michael Huckabee, Israel Defense Forces activist Susan Levin-Abir, former Palestinian terrorist and now celebrated pro-Israel advocate Walid Shoebat, and University of Haifa Chairman Dov Weissglas.

The Season to Remember – Catholic New York

Posted By on February 29, 2020

By CARDINAL TIMOTHY DOLAN

Remember!

A loaded word in our vocabulary, one laden with substance.

Chatting with people my own ageI just turned seventyand beyond, I often hear them whisper with apprehension, I worry my memory is beginning to slip.

Or, visiting with elders at one of our residences, the family around her will warn me, Her memory is gone. She will not know you, one of the more chilling reports one can give.

After my sister Debs wonderful husband, Fred, died of cancer at sixty-six, she worried. I only hope his grandkids will be able to remember him.

Professors of memory, we historians, often warn, Those who lose memory of the past are bound to repeat its mistakes.

Or, as the guide to the haunting Auschwitz exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage explained to us on a recent tour, We must never forget what happened.

The Bible chants the essential role of memory in our faith.

How often the Old Testament exhorts, Remember! chiding Gods people never to forget what God has done for them. A people who forget quickly become pagans. To pass on those memories to our children and grandchildren is a sacred duty of a believer.

Then comes Jesus, who on the night before He died, at His last supper that Holy Thursday commanded, Do this in memory of me! As the Benedictine scholar Gregory Dix reflects,

Was ever a command so obeyed? For century after century, spreading slowly to every continent and country and among every race on earth, this action has been done, in every conceivable human circumstance, for every conceivable human need from infancy and before it to extreme old age and after it, from the pinnacles of earthly greatness to the refuge of fugitives in the caves and dens of the earth. Men have found no better thing than this to do for kings in their crowning and for criminals going to the scaffold; for armies in triumph or for a bride and bridegroom in a little country church; for the proclamation of a dogma or for a good crop of wheat; for the wisdom of the Parliament of a mighty nation or for a sick old woman afraid to die; for a schoolboy sitting an examination or for Columbus setting out to discover America;...because the Turk was at the gates of Vienna [and the enemy] on the beach at Dunkirk;...tremulously, by an old monk on the fiftieth anniversary of his vows; furtively, by an exiled bishop who had hewn timber all day in a prison camp near Murmansk; gorgeously, for the canonisation of St. Joan of Arc...And best of all, week by week and month by month, on a hundred thousand successive Sundays, faithfully, unfailingly, across all the parishes of Christendom, the pastors have done this just to make the holy common people of God.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, millions around the planet heard that word again, as we were smudged with ashes and began our forty-day hike to Holy Week and Easter.

Remember, man, you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.

To recall reverently our origin and our destiny is a noble task indeed.

We are dust, arent we, as we remember that our Creator fashioned us out of the soil of the earth.

We will return to dust, as our bodies, earthen vessels, are planted back into the ground and decay to the elements.

So much of what we pursue heremoney, clothes, cars, homes, property, acclaim, prestigewill pass away like the driven snow on a February day.

Our good intentions can vanish as rapidly as the ashen cross on our forehead.

We remember from whom we camethe Lordand to whom we are destinedeternal union with Him.

Because, remember! While our earthen vessel, our body, will indeed return to dust, our soul, the vessel not of dust but of Gods very life, is intended to live forever!

We are made in His image and likeness! We bear in our very person the dying and rising of Christ, the grand event of Good Friday and Easter Sunday for which we get ready these six weeks of Lent. As John Cardinal OConnor often preached,

I see in each one of you, whatever may have been your past, whatever your circumstances at the moment, the reflection of the sacred, the image and likeness of Almighty God. I see you as sacred persons to be loved, persons of priceless dignity and worth.

Indeed I may very well see you as being far better persons than some of you may see yourselves to be...To underestimate you is to underestimate God, for each of you is sparked with His divinity.

This is indeed the season to remember, our origin and our destiny, the summons to greatness and eternity, the invitation to virtue and grace, the rejection of living only for the now with no memory of from where we came and to Whom we are going. No spiritual dementia for us! We remember! Its Lent!

Michael Douglas And Catherine Zeta-Jones Will Host The 2020 Genesis Prize Ceremony In Jerusalem – Jewish Week

Posted By on February 29, 2020

(JTA) The Genesis Prize is taking a page from the Oscars.

The movie star husband and wife duo of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones will co-host the 2020 Genesis Prize ceremony, which will give the award nicknamed the Jewish Nobel to Natan Sharanksy, in Jerusalem in June.

Douglas and Zeta-Jones and their children were last in Israel when Douglas received the prize in 2015. He directed his $1 million award, and an additional $ 1 million donated by philanthropist Roman Abramovich, toprojectsaimed at fostering aculture of acceptancefor intermarried families. (Douglas is Jewish, while Zeta-Jones is not.)

During the couples visit, they will participate in a special event held by the Genesis Prize Foundation to honor the legacy of Kirk Douglas Michaels father, who died earlier this month at the age of 103 and his connection to Jerusalem.

We are particularly honored to have the opportunity to host the ceremony honoring a true Jewish hero, Natan Sharansky, Douglas said in a statement. Coming to Jerusalem this year is also important for our family as a way to honor the memory of my father Kirk Douglas. He adored Israel, and had a special connection with Jerusalem ever since he visited to make the film Cast a Giant Shadow in 1965. His re-discovery of his Jewish faith, his passion for his heritage has been a guiding light for me, passed down to my children.

The Genesis Prize was started in 2013 and is financed through a permanent $100 million endowment. The annual award honors extraordinary individuals for their outstanding professional achievement, contribution to humanity and commitment to Jewish values. Sharansky was announced as the seventh Genesis Prize laureate in December.
