Rabbis Get High for Study Testing Effect of Magic Mushrooms on Religious Thinking – Haaretz

Posted By on July 10, 2017

Psychologist says participants seem to get deeper appreciation of their religious heritage in study conducted by scientists at Johns Hopkins University

Several rabbis have taken part in an American university experiment that studies the effect of magic mushrooms on the religious experience.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore signed up more than 20 leaders from various religious denominations after issuing a call for volunteers at the beginning of 2016.

After an initial vetting process, the participants were given two strong doses of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, a psychedelic drug.

British daily The Guardian reported that the study aims to discover whether a transcendental experience makes the religious leaders more effective and confident in their work, and how it alters their religious thinking.

The study will publish its findings after conducting follow-up interviews with the participants a year after the psilocybin was administered.

The paper quotes psychologist Dr. William Richards, who is involved in the study, as saying profound mystical experiences are quite common with the use of psilocybin. It seemed like a no-brainer that they might be of interest, if not valuable, to clergy, he noted.

As well as the rabbis (whose names, like the other participants, have not been released), other religious leaders taking part included Catholic and Presbyterian priests and a Zen Buddhist. Richards told The Guardian that although no Hindu priest or Muslim imam signed up, just about all the other bases are covered.

The two sessions took place in New York University and Johns Hopkins. After the drugs were administered, The Guardian reported that the participants spent time lying on a couch while wearing eyeshades and listening to religious music on headphones.

The paper quoted Richards as saying that, so far, all of the participants incredibly value their experience. No one has been confused or upset or regrets doing it.

Richards also told The Guardian that although it was too early to discuss results, people seem to be getting a deeper appreciation of their own religious heritage from the whole experience.

Like other religions, Judaism does not advocate the use of hallucinogens. In the Talmud (Pesachim 113a), Rav advises his son not to get into the habit of drinking medications, lest you develop an addiction. Talmudic scholar Rashi interpreted this as meaning that drugs are addictive and waste a persons money.

Local synagogue raises money to relocate historic stained glass … – The Patriot Ledger

Posted By on July 10, 2017

"We want to bring our window home."

There is something missing in the Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills new home.

The synagogue, tucked away in a quiet field, was built in May 2016. But a 1950 stained glass window, which has been with the community for 60 years, remains in the synagogues former location on Blue Hill Avenue. Only 2.5 miles away, it will take an estimated $18,000 to move.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, Lesley Acton, the president of the synagogue, gazed at an empty space on the wall, left open for the window. We want to bring our window home, said Acton.

The window was created in 1950 by artist David Holleman, of Arlington. An accompanying plaque explains that the window incorporates different symbols related to the history of the Holocaust. The six flames rising from the Tree of Life represent the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. Beneath the tree is the Hebrew word zachor or remember a caution to never forget or permit this to happen again.

An image of the Star of David represents the forced identification which Hitler required of all Jews.

Currently, the window is being maintained at the Concord Baptist Church at Blue Hill Avenue, the synagogues old location. While the intention was always to have the window rejoin the synagogue, Acton said todays political climate has made it an imperative. Last March, swastika graffiti was found in the boys bathroom at Pierce Middle School.

We want to pass on the message to the rest of the world that racism, xenophobia, anti-Semetism, Islamophobia any of these things are unacceptable, said Acton.

The window will serve as the centerpiece to the synagogues Holocaust education program. Artwork can make difficult lessons more accessible, Acton said.

Its a good teaching aid because whether its children from our Hebrew school or children outside, its something tangible we can show them... the Holocaust is not an easy thing to explain to young children, said Acton.

To raise the money, the synagogue has created a GoFundMe campaign where theyve already raised more than $3,000. They also held a fundraising gala in November and plan to use some of the money raised for the window relocation.

We hope it will be a constant reminder to never forget, said Acton.

After UNESCO vote, Netanyahu reads from Bible to prove Jewish ties to Hebron – Jewish Telegraphic Agency

JERUSALEM (JTA) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put a kippah on his head and read from the Bible during the weekly Cabinet meeting to illustrate the Jewish peoples and Israels connection to Hebron.

Sundays display came after the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on Friday acting on a request from the Palestinians, declared Hebrons Old City to be a heritage site in danger.

I would like to read fromGenesis 23:16-19, Netanyahu said in opening up the meeting. And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the children of Heth, Netanyahu said.

The connection between the Jewish people and Hebron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs is one of purchase and of history which may be without parallel in the history of peoples. Of course this did not prevent the UNESCO World Heritage Committee last Friday from passing yet another delusional resolution which determined that the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the same Cave of Machpelah, is a Palestinian heritage site.

In fact, the resolution applied more broadly to Hebrons Old City and did not describe it as Palestinian, though it did note that the resolution was submitted by Palestine. An outside report that the committee cited in the resolution noted the Old Citys importance to Jews, Muslims and Christians.

Netanyahu reiterated an announcement first made Friday that Israel would cut an additional $1 million from Israels United Nations membership dues and transfer the funds to the establishment of The Museum of the Heritage of the Jewish People in Kiryat Arba and Hebron. The money also will be used for additional heritage initiatives related to Hebron, he said.

Israel announced in May that it would withhold $1 million in its funding for the United Nations following the passage by UNESCO of a resolution that condemned the countrys sovereignty in Jerusalem.

Israels annual contribution to the United Nations amounts to over $40 million, a spokesman for the mission told JTA in an email in January after Israel said it would withhold $6 million following a Security Council resolution the previous month condemning settlements.

The U.N.s budget for 2016-17 totals $5.4 billion, with the U.S. being the largest contributor followed by Japan and China.

Is Hungary’s anti-Soros campaign antisemitic? Even Israelis can’t … – The Jerusalem Post

Posted By on July 10, 2017

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau has backed the Hungarian government in its defense of its anti-George Soros campaign, which the Israeli embassy in Hungary has insinuated is antisemitic.

The posters depict the Hungarian-American Jewish billionaire laughing, alongside the words Lets not leave Soros the last laugh. The government objects to Soross call for Hungary to allow migrants to enter the country.

But while Israeli Ambassador to Hungary Yossi Amrani has called on the government to take down the posters, joining calls by Jewish leaders in the country, Lau and other Jewish leaders have countered claims that its antisemitic.

Amrani issued a letter on Saturday calling on those involved in the billboard campaign to reconsider the consequences. No gain can come from such a campaign recalling the historic lesson. At the moment beyond political criticism of a certain person, the campaign not only evokes sad memories but also sows hatred and fear, he wrote. Its our moral responsibility to raise a voice and call on the relevant authorities to exert their power and put an end to this cycle. Such letters are always pre-approved by Israels Foreign Ministry.

On Sunday, the ministry issued the following statement: Israel deplores any expression of antisemitism in any country and stands with Jewish communities everywhere in confronting this hatred. This was the sole purpose of the statement issued by Israels ambassador to Hungary. In no way was the statement meant to delegitimize criticism of George Soros, who continuously undermines Israels democratically elected governments by funding organizations that defame the Jewish state and seek to deny it the right to defend itself.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbans chief of staff, Jnos Lzr, told journalists on Thursday that, The Hungarian governments goal is to stop Soross migrant campaign, which is supporting the migration of illegal migrants into our country. The government is not criticizing George Soros for his Jewish origin, but for his supporting the growing number of migrants entering in uncontrolled crowds into Europe.

When the issue was raised last week in a meeting between Orban and Lau and other Jewish leaders, the latter expressed understanding of Orbans point of view.

Lau maintained that the focus should be on the content of the argument rather than on the individuals behind it. Not every time you have a dispute with someone Jewish is it necessarily antisemitic, his assistant Pinchas Tenenbaum told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday. He doesnt see it as antisemitic because there was no mention of his Jewish heritage.

In addition to Lau, the delegation who met with Orban included general director of the Rabbinical Center of Europe, Rabbi Menachem Margolin, and Hungarian Rabbis Baruch Oberlander and Shlomo Kovesh, the latter of whom is head of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation. The meeting followed the inauguration of the opening of a new kosher slaughterhouse in the country, for which they thanked the prime minister for his commitment to freedom of religion and to the eradication of antisemitism.

Though the campaign with the portrait of Mr. Soros is not necessarily very elegant, it has absolutely no relation with, and does not make any mention or even hint to his Jewish origin, Margolin told the Post on Sunday. When this claim came up a few times, the government has made it clear that it rejects any means of trying to connect this argument with peoples ancestry.

Kovesh told local media that, In many peoples eyes, Soros symbolizes the speculative figure of the immoral capitalism, and for that they dislike him. Calling every criticism which is turned against him antisemitism, is basically channeling all that hatred against the Jewish community. We have to be very careful when we label things with an antisemitic term, to make sure we are not making a self-fulfilling judgment.

But Hungarys Jewish umbrella group accused the government of provoking antisemitism with the campaign. Andrs Heisler, president of the Federation of the Jewish Communities in Hungary, on Thursday demanded a stop to the government campaign.

The campaign has reportedly spurred several antisemitic incidents throughout the country. In Zalaegerszeg, the towns Holocaust memorial was damaged and many of the posters defaced with antisemitic graffiti.

Heisler appeared Thursday on the oppositions Club Radio to demand an end to the campaign, and in an open letter issued that day, he wrote: The billboard campaign, while not openly antisemitic, can still very much unleash uncontrolled antisemitic and other feelings. This poisonous message hurts all of Hungary.

Lzr added that Hungarian Jews should not be afraid because they can count on the Hungarian government, which always will defend them.

Hungarian Jews have called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel an official visit to Hungary scheduled for July 18, to protest remarks by Orban in praise of Hungarys antisemitic leader during World War II, Mikls Horthy.

Late last month, Orban included Horthy, a Hitler ally, among those he called exceptional statesmen in Hungary for leading the country following the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. Horthy signed anti-Jewish laws in 1938 and 1939, as well as in 1920.

Last week, Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid also called on Netanyahu to cancel his visit to Budapest over Orbans actions. JTA contributed to this report.

Radiation and ringworm: a tale of social policy, racism, and health care – Mondoweiss

Posted By on July 10, 2017

Image of Mizrahi children subject to experimental ringworm treatment in Israel, from the documentary The Ringworm Children

On June 14, 2017, the Israeli newspaper, Israel Hayom, published an extraordinary report documenting medical experiments on mostly Yemenite children who subsequently disappeared; those who died were autopsied without parental consent, the parents were often not allowed to see their dead children, and no death certificates were provided. Since Operation Magic Carpet, 1949 to 1950, when 49,000 Jewish Yemenites were airlifted to Israel to grow the Jewish population and counteract the procreating Palestinians, there have been three official inquiries exploring egregious and unethical patterns of behavior towards Yemeni children by the medical and social service communities. Previous Israeli committees concluded that no children were kidnapped, although some children died or were adopted by Ashkenazi families without the birth parents consents. Parents were simply told their children had died. Israel Hayom also documented an experimental treatment on four malnourished babies who subsequently died from the injection of a dry protein created from plasma as well as an attempt to prove (using faulty assays and assessments) that Yemenite children were of African descent by testing dead children for sickle cell anemia, again without consent. (There was no evidence for sickle cell but the researcher published a scientific paper before he was proven wrong.)

Despite the Israeli states efforts to delegitimize and silence this information, (no investigation, no crime), the kidnapping of up to ten thousand Yemenite babies in immigrant absorption camps for adoption by Ashkenazi families was well documented in 2013 and 2014 by the Israeli webzine +972. In the 2013 article, the information is based on the 2009 book by Shoshana Madmoni-Gerber, Israeli Media and the Framing of Internal Conflict: The Yemenite Babies Affair. While the Israeli press largely stood by the official state narrative (nothing could have happened and besides, data was classified or lost), this attitude was reinforced by racist stereotypes towards Yemenites as primitive, ignorant, and uncaring towards their children. In short, adoption was doing them a favor. Additionally, the fact that the cover-up persisted for decades reflects the continued racism within Israeli society and the medical establishment. The forcible transfer of babies is also defined by the UN as genocide and clearly no one in Israel is going to admit to that.

The 2014 +972 article is centered on revealing and painful interviews with adoptees about their experiences, abducted from their families via a variety of official and unofficial mechanisms, (shall we just call this human trafficking?) devoid of a paper trail, with devastated parents searching for years for their biological children, a theft unchallenged by the legal system. Some adoptive parents even registered their childrens birth certificates as their own biological children, retroactively with collusion from Ministerial clerks. Of course there was always the problem for the pale skinned Ashkenazi parents trying to explain their connection (which was usually loving and healthy) to their dark offspring and that was how the secret was often revealed.

Richard Silverstein in his June 15, 2017 blog added more tortured details: because Yemenite parents did not speak Hebrew and medical staff did not speak Yemeni-Arabic, children were assigned a number rather than a name, numbers were sometimes lost or confused, leading to further mistreatment and misidentification. More significantly, he notes the scandal involved the US National Institutes of Health which paid Israeli hospitals nearly $1-million (in current value; then it was 160,000 Israeli lira) to provide fetuses of dead Yemenite babies and corpses of adults which were used in medical experiments to determine why Yemenites did not develop heart disease.

Silverstein references the corollary tragedy of the Ringworm scandal which led me to his 2014 blog. I was vaguely aware that newly arrived Yemenite children were treated with radiation for ringworm, a benign fungal infection that resolves spontaneously during adolescence. This treatment caused longterm adverse consequences, but I have to admit, I had no idea of the gravity of this crime. Silverstein links to The Ringworm children, a damning investigative documentary that won the award for Best Documentary at the Haifa International Film Festival and was featured as a documentary at the Israel Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2007.(Dont say you did not know.) In the 1950s, approximately 100,000 Jewish immigrant children from Arab countries were taken from their parents and without parental consent, their heads were shaved, their hair was plucked, they were placed on a table, sometimes in restraints, and given radiation doses up to 600 rads. The dangers of leukemia were known in the 1920s and by 1952 scientists understood that 0.3 rads was the maximum safe weekly dosage. The now adult victims speak with sorrow and rage of the thousands who died (buried in unmarked graves), either as children from radiation poisoning or in early adulthood from cancer, of a lifetime of scalp pain, open sores, high cancer risk, epilepsy, infertility, and social and psychological damage. It was gripping testimony that left me in tears and shock and I am hard to shock. It is worth watching.

The program was run by Dr. Shiba, Director of the Health Ministry, Division of Social Medicine, who was not only obsessed with ringworm as a contagious fungus, but more as a symbol of a social disease, a black plague, and of children that needed to be decontaminated, medically and socially. He was part of the Israeli medical establishment that viewed eugenics as a positive force and described Moroccans as primitives, backwards, human rubbish, and defective people. He believed that Ashkenazi Jews were genetically superior to Mizrahi Jews and that health disorders reflected a genetic weakness in the susceptible population.

Dr Shiba traveled to the US to fundraise and acquired a collection of Picker x-ray machines, old, outdated, and possibly army surplus. Treatments were performed by nurses with no training in radiotherapy and the machines were certainly not designed to treat ringworm with high dose radiation. In 1952 the Israel Radiologist Union acknowledged the safe doses for radiation, based on experiments in Nazi Germany, data from Hiroshima, and other countries such as the US. According to the documentary, radiation was used in the US to treat ringworm in the 1930s, but by the 1950s, the medical establishment was well aware of the medical harm, radiation damage, and ensuing court suits.

Beyond the obvious ethnic discrimination and undervaluing of the human life of children of color, the other sinister issue raised by the film involves the US militarys desire post-Hiroshima to understand the effects of high levels of radiation exposure. (Remember US troops were used as guinea pigs.) When that became socially unacceptable in America, the documentary suggests that Israeli officials might have been willing to offer some of their human rubbish as research material. Very strangely, during a time of economic impoverishment and rationing in Israel, more money was spent on the ringworm radiation treatments than the entire Israeli national budget, and these numbers are off the books. It seems records were hidden or filed under state secrets or lost, what appears to be an official conspiracy of silence. Picker still supplies Israel with x-ray machines and efforts by victims to open records, prove state culpability, and receive compensation have been stymied by the Knesset and the bogus Ringworm Victim Law.

To put this in historical context, eugenics was very popular in the US in the early 1900s, in fact we were a model for the Nazis. Lower doses of radiation were used to treat ringworm elsewhere in the world and elite Ashkenazi Zionists continue to share their racist views toward people of color and Arabs in particular with much of the Western world. US health care is guilty of many egregious practices. During my residency in the early 1970s we fought against sterilizing poor women, African Americans, and Native Americans without their consent, and then there were the decades of forced sterilizations of people with low IQs, imbeciles. And lets remember similar racist and outrageous adoption practices for Native American children in the US who were wrenched from their inadequate families. Many recall horrendous medical experiments in the US like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study where for decades, African American men, without their consent, were observed rather than treated for syphilis which is a devastating disease.

Beyond these human, social, and political tragedies, important questions remain. Internationally, the Israeli medical system is considered first rate and the source of significant therapies and research, but no amount of success can mask the egregious treatment of Yemeni children and the subsequent cover-up. How can the adoption and radiation victims gain access to whatever records remain? If this is how the Israeli establishment treats Jews from Arab countries, can we imagine how they treat Palestinians? What is the US contribution to and complicity in this crime? And for me as a physician, why didnt one doctor just say, NO.

Cannons found off Israeli coast may have been used to fight 16th-century pirates – The Times of Israel

Posted By on July 10, 2017

Three bronze cannons found off the coast of Megadim in northern Israel shed light on how the Venetian weapons industry innovated tools to help merchants fight off pirates hundreds of years ago.

As reported in an article in the August edition of the Journal of Archaeological Science, the three cannons were likely part of the arsenal of a sailing merchantman, whose ship was wrecked off the shore of Haifa in the last quarter of the 16th or the early 17th century, during the first half of the Age of the Sail (15711862).

The three long-barreled bronze cannons were first discovered and surveyed during 19721973. Cannons A and B were lifted with air bags and transported ashore, and retrieved for study then. In 2013, Cannon C, the removable chambers and the rigging elements were also retrieved. A and B were classified as sakers circa 3.5 m. (11.5 ft.) long, and C is a falcon 2.8 m. (9 ft.) long.

It was an era of Barbary corsairs. Enmity with the Ottoman Empire was ever-present for Christian European traders. Adding to these existential maritime threats were a few well-known Jewish pirates who were bent on retribution after the Spanish Expulsion. Foremost among them was Sinan the Jew, who sailed under the notorious Ottoman admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa.

Since the 1470s, the Venetian navy had begun employing cannon as anti-ship weaponry. Likewise merchants, forced into preparation for warfare by sea, helped fund an arms race that fueled innovations in maritime munitions, especially in the super-industrial zone of the Venetian Arsenal.

The Venetian Arsenal was an amazingly advanced center of manufacturing for its time. it used assembly line techniques and had a huge store of standardized prefabricated replacement parts, which made for quick ship and weaponry building and a robust navy.

Dr. Dana Ashkenazi from Tel Aviv Universitys School of Mechanical Engineering (courtesy)

The three Venetian cannons found at Megadim were not used by the Venetian navy a well-known foe of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the Holy Land. Rather, it has been suggested that they were a private ship-owners property, according to the multidisciplinary research team, headed by Dr. Dana Ashkenazi from Tel Aviv Universitys School of Mechanical Engineering.

Ashkenazis research is the first chemical analysis study of Venetian bronze cannons from the period. Therefore, the findings presented in the Journal of Archaeological Science serves as a database for future investigations of similar cannons.

The cannons are predominantly composed of bronze. However, slight elemental variations between the cannons may be related to the use of pre-industrial technologies, where the available materials were not uniform and only sketchy analytical methods were available, according to the report. The team hypothesizes that incorporation of scrap metals in the melt during the casting of the cannons may account for some variances.

The chain and deadeye: (a) as found on the sea bottom; (b) the wooden deadeye; and (c) the iron chain and deadeye (Drawing and photos: E. Galili)

As befits Venetian craftsmanship, the cannon are works of art as well as utility.

Cannon A, which weighs 1,260 kg. (2,778 lbs), is decorated with a vegetal motif, according to the report. Other decor includes a coat of arms, an oval shield containing two seashells, and three six-pointed stars. In a feature unique to this cannon, a pair of dolphin-shaped lifting handles is on the reinforcements front end.

At 1,145 kg. (2,524 lbs), Cannon B features rows of acanthus leaves (commonly imitated in Corinthian capitals), which alternate with rosettes around the circumference. A row of serpentine flames decorate the weapon, as well as a decorative shield edged by vegetal motifs, containing an emblem representing two hands holding what appears to be a scroll. According to the study, this saker was cast by Giovanni (Zuane) II Alberghetti and can be dated to the 1570s or 1580s.

The bronze cannons as found at sea and decorative elements of cannon C after cleaning (Photos: E. Galili)

The smallest of the three cannons at a mere 575 kg. (1,267 lbs.), Cannon C also bears a vegetal motif with scrolled ribbons. Formed by a pointed shield with two lion heads depicted at its sides, a blank coat-of-arms, according to the team, is a characteristic mark of this foundry. This gun is attributed to Sigismondo II Alberghetti, son of Emilio I, Giovanni II (Zuane) first cousin of Giovanni II (Zuane).

In addition to the metal analysis, the few scant wood remains and other wrought-iron artifacts were also studied. According to the article, a multidisciplinary testing approach was applied, combining typology, metallurgical characterization, archaeobotanical analysis and 14C radiocarbon dating.

The breach-loading bronze chamber 1: (a) as-retrieved; (b) the chamber after removal of the concretion, with two holes where the iron handle is missing; (c) the chamber after removal of the concretion, far from the missing handle; (d) drawing of chamber 1, area of the missing handle; and (e) cross-section of chamber 1 and its wooden wad (wad 1) (Drawing: R. Pollak, Photos: E. Galili).

There were three types of trees represented in the wood remains, which points to the nationality of the ship. Although all taxa are native to southern Europe, two extend within the Mediterranean zone reaching as far as Israel (Italian cypress and Sicilian sumac).

However, the researchers dismiss a Holy Land origin because the third tree, the Italian stone pine is limited to northern areas.

This information reinforces the suggestion that the ship may have originated in a southern European country that had contact with Venice, Naples, and Ragusa (Dubrovnik), according to the study.

The State of Israel, Zionism and the Jewish Worldwide Diaspora – Center for Research on Globalization

Posted By on July 9, 2017

Bearing in mind that the majority of the Jewish Diaspora is not Zionist only less than half reside in Israel, the majority being permanently resident in the US, and Europe plus the documented fact that the overwhelmingproportion of Zionists are not even Jewish but are Evangelical Christians who number something in the region of 50 million it is reasonably clear that the Jewish majority who currently live and work in the Diaspora, not only have no desire to move to one of the worlds most dangerous, geo-political trouble spots, but would dismiss the idea of the State of Israel being a safe haven for anyone, whether Jew or Gentile.

So, what are the facts?

As a result of Likud government intransigence, there is now no peace process with the over five million indigenous Muslim Arabs, half of whom are forced to live under a 10 year Israeli blockade, of essential supplies, designed to try to break them. Tragically, there is now virtually no electricity or power in Gaza for its 600,000 families the majority of whom are deliberately kept unemployed and hungry.

However, there is an absolute imperative to recognise the difference between Jewish Diaspora communities in Europe and America, and the hard .

The Jewish worldwide Diaspora is universally respected for its various talents (and its loyalty to its host countries), whereas the State of Israel is held in fear because of its massive, undeclared arsenal of nuclear warheads that could bring disaster to the world. There is virtually no commonality between the two. Israel is a secular, nuclear weapons state that has little connection with Judaism, or any respect for human dignity and life.

Meanwhile the region simmers on the brink of another expected war with Hezbollah, which would almost certainly involve heavy fatalities on both sides.

Hardly a place to holiday, much less a Dar-es-Salaam, by any stretch of the imagination.

Devdutt Pattanaik: The fascinating design of the Jewish Bible – Mid-Day

Posted By on July 9, 2017

Illustration/Devdutt Pattanaik

Many Jewish Americans choose to write G-d instead of God. By not taking God's name directly, they show respect. Jewish people believe that long ago, maybe 4,000 years ago, G-d gave Moses the history of his people, and the law, which he recorded in five books which constitute Torah, the Jewish Bible. This written word of God, written in Hebrew, is read out in the Jewish synagogue regularly. Here, we find 613 commandments of God, equal to the number of seeds in a pomegranate, say some, which is why many believe that the Forbidden Fruit of the Jewish people was probably the pomegranate, and not the apple of the Christian Bible.

Over the centuries, along with this written word of God, the Jewish people collected the orally transmitted laws of their people, and the various commentaries on it. This collection of laws in Hebrew that existed 2,000 years ago, and its commentaries in Aramaic over the last 2,000 years, along with references, and indices, constitute the Talmud.

The Talmud was compiled in Jerusalem first, and then in Babylon, after the Jewish people were forced into exile by Assyrians who destroyed their temple 2,500 years ago. Later, many returned during the rule of the Persians, only to be exiled again during the Greek and Roman occupation of Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. Over the centuries, exiled in many lands, Jewish scholars wrote commentaries on the laws of God, and there were commentaries on these commentaries. Everything was collected carefully, for they dealt with every aspect of Jewish life.

Talmud has six orders, each of which is divided into 63 sections. Currently, there are 517 chapters, over 10 million words and 6,000 pages in 38 volumes. And what is remarkable is that the Jewish people did what the rest of the world discovered only after the invention of the Internet: they developed a system of 'cross-referencing' and 'crowd sourcing' so that the reading is not mono-linear: word to sentence to paragraph to chapter, from page to page. The design is poly-linear: you can jump from one page to another via cross-referencing; and within a page you can witness the various commentaries and debates of scholars occurring over history across geographies.

The most amazing thing is the design of the Talmud page. It is designed almost like a series of concentric circles. In the centre is the Mishnah that captures the oral law prevalent in 200 AD. The earliest discussion on Mishnah, dated between 200 AD and 500 AD, is captured below it, as the Gemara. Around this on one side is the Rashi, notes by a 11th century French scholar that enable the reader make sense of the Mishnah and Gemara. On the other side is the Tosafot that comments on the Rashi. Then there are internal cross-references to other passages in the Talmud that deal with similar laws, as well as external cross-references to other books with other commentaries. In effect, one is able to see the views of various scholars of the Jewish diaspora separated over time and space in one single page.

Typically, the Talmud is read by two scholars, who in effect are discussing G-d's law with hundreds of scholars who lived before them in different parts of the world. As a result the hall where Talmud is being studied is a noisy interactive space, very different from the eerie silence of libraries where people read mono-linear books in isolation, cut off from people past and present.
