A police vehicle sits near the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, on Jan. 16, 2022. Four people were held hostage at the synagogue for more than 10 hours by a gunman before being freed, one of a spate of antisemitic acts that took place last year.

The percentage of Americans who believe in a number of antisemitic tropes has spiked in the past three years, according to the results of an Anti-Defamation League survey released Thursday.

ADL leaders say years of antisemitic rhetoric from former President Donald Trump, along with emboldened violent extremism and lax social media policies are to blame.

The survey, which asked respondents to rate the truthfulness of 14 different traditional negative stereotypes about Jews, found that about one in five American adults say they agree with at least six such sentiments. That's compared to about one in nine in 2019, the last time this survey was conducted.

The 2022 survey, conducted last fall among 4,000 respondents, found roughly 70% agree with the statement "Jews stick together more than other Americans" and more than half agree with "Jews in business go out of their way to hire other Jews." One in three respondents agreed that "Jews do not share my values" and about 26% agreed with "Jews have too much power in the business world."

"What these findings represent, what they tell us, and what creates such urgency is the fact that large, huge numbers of Americans hold dangerous, false ideas about the Jewish people," ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a news conference. "While it is very encouraging that the vast majority of our country doesn't hold these ideas, 50 plus million people is worrisome and it means we've got work to do."

The organization has measured agreement with these anti-Jewish tropes since 1964. Findings from that initial survey represented the peak of antisemitic beliefs, showing nearly a third of American adults then agreed with six or more of the statements. The numbers in 2022 are the highest since 1992. The decades in between show relatively lower levels of belief in antisemitic tropes. The ADL expressed alarm over the sudden jump from roughly one in nine Americans' belief in several antisemitic tropes in 2019 to one in five in 2022.

Separate data collection by the ADL has found the volume of documented reports of antisemitic harassment, vandalism and violence rising consistently since about 2015, in contrast to the more recent spike in anti-Jewish attitudes.

Matt Williams, vice president of the ADL's Center for Antisemitism Research, said that researchers have found that people are being more honest about their biases compared to decades ago.

"So one of the things we could be seeing is people agreeing with these [tropes] more. Another thing that we could be saying is people willing to admit that they agree with these [tropes] more. Both of which are cause for different kinds of concern," Williams said.

The Anti-Defamation League: Gaming companies do not prevent anti …

Posted By on April 14, 2023

A new report criticizes companies such as Epic Games, Riot or Activision-Blizzard and demands that they take a hard line against revealing anti-Semitism in their games

It turns out that the gaming companies are not doing much to prevent antisemitism in their games.

The Anti-Defamation League in the US published a summary report this week that ranked the ten largest social platforms and games and the companies' efforts to stop the phenomenon online.

At the bottom of the list is

Apik Games

(Fortnite's developer) who received a failing grade in almost every parameter: the game does not take a hard hand towards players who deny the Holocaust, it takes more than 24 hours to respond to players' claims and complaints.

And not only those who complained about Holocaust denial or anti-Semitism.

Afik also receives a failing grade in handling the average user.

Right after it you can find

Activision-Blizzard

(Call of Duty, Diablo, World of Warcraft and many more) that received a passing grade.

It failed in exactly the same categories as Afik, only that, unlike it, it does take measures and help known users who filed a complaint.

It's just a shame that they also take more than 24 hours to respond.

Riot Games

(League of Legends, Valorant) is in slightly better shape.

Although there is no policy towards Holocaust denial and no special efforts are made to prevent such cases, it takes actions and measures for all users.

Streaming and social platforms are also included in the report, such as

Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, Discord,

and of course also streaming services such as

Twitch

(which is at the top of the list) or

YouTube

(in second place) and of course -

Tik Tok

(third place).

You can see that when it comes to handling complaints and responding to users, the gaming companies are lagging behind.

Certainly compared to all other social and streaming platforms.

The Anti-Defamation League recommends that all those companies enact a policy against anti-Semitism as soon as possible, and of course make sure to enforce it.

Jonathan Greenblatt, the president of the Anti-Defamation League noted upon the publication of the report: "The companies claim that they are handling the spread of hate on their platforms.

But when it comes to antisemitism, they don't.

The result is that Holocaust deniers take advantage of this lax enforcement to spread harmful anti-Semitic ideas and gain overwhelming support for their hateful views."

33 Hate, Extremist Groups Active In Virginia: Report

Posted By on April 14, 2023

VIRGINIA The number of active hate groups in the United States declined for a second consecutive year in 2020, the Southern Poverty Law Center said in a report this week, but warned that its more difficult to measure extremism in Virginia and other states as groups move to encrypted platforms during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a leading legal advocacy nonprofit, identified 838 hate groups operating across the country in 2020, down from 940 documented hate groups in 2019 and a record high 1,020 hate groups in 2018.

The groups hate map shows extremist groups are active in nearly all U.S. states. In Virginia, 33 groups are active, including:

Among neighboring states and jurisdictions, North Carolina has 29 hate groups that are active, followed by 19 in the District of Columbia, 15 in Maryland and four in West Virginia, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 highlighted the large number of far-right and hate groups active in Virginia and across the country. Thomas Caldwell, 65, of Berryville was arrested on conspiracy charges. He is associated with the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia founded by military and law enforcement veterans, according to court records.

Before the storming of the Capitol, where hate groups were well-represented, Virginia was known for hosting one of the largest gatherings of hate group members in recent years. The Unite the Right rally in August 2017 attracted members of hate groups from across the country to Charlottesville. One of the rally participants, James Fields, drove his car into a group of people in downtown Charlottesville, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The Southern Poverty Law Center report was released days after a national terrorism bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security warned of the potential for a wave of extremist violence following President Joe Bidens inauguration. The agency said it didnt have information indicating a specific, credible threat but suggested the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection may embolden extremists and set the stage for additional politically motivated attacks.

Homeland Security said in the bulletin that we remain concerned that individuals frustrated with the existence of governmental authority and the presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances and ideological causes fueled by false narratives, could continue to mobilize a broad range of ideologically-motivated actors to incite or commit violence.

Southern Poverty Law Center President and CEO Margaret Huang said in the groups annual Year in Hate and Extremism report that anti-government extremism has been simmering for years, and racist conspiracy theories and white nationalist ideology are now part of the political mainstream.

For three decades, we have attempted to sound the alarm about these groups, their growth and the dangers they pose, Huang said in a news release. It is clearer now than ever that our nation faces an increasingly dangerous threat from homegrown extremists ranging from anti-government militias to hate groups and white supremacists.

Investigators say the violent mob that broke into the Capitol included Donald Trump supporters continuing to fight the 2020 election results, but also people aligned with far-right groups, citizen militias and white supremacy groups, among others.

A proliferation of internet platforms allows these groups and individuals to coalesce with potentially violent movements such as the shadowy group QAnon, which the FBI has listed as a domestic terrorism threat, without being card-carrying members blurring the boundaries of hate groups and those espousing far-right ideologies, the Southern Poverty Law Center said in its report.

The insurrection at the Capitol was the culmination of years of right-wing radicalization, Susan Corke, director of the organizations Intelligence Project, said in the news release.

Most recently, it was the product of Donald Trumps support for and encouragement of radicalized individuals and groups to buy into conspiracy theories about a stolen election, Corke said. Trump may no longer be in the White House, but the white nationalist and extremist movement he emboldened and incited to violence is not going anywhere and may grow more dangerous to our country.

The FBI warned a day before the rioters stormed the Capitol last month that extremists planned to travel to Washington, D.C., to commit violence and wage war to stop Congress from certifying Bidens election. Trump was impeached for a historic second time on a single charge that he incited the insurrection. The former presidents trial in the Senate begins later this month.

In its situational information report issued Jan. 5, the FBI said maps of Capitol complex tunnels were shared among people traveling to the nations capital to protest Bidens certification, and that intelligence showed some rally participants planned to meet in various states and travel as a group to Washington.

Among the dozens of people charged so far in a sweeping Department of Justice investigation are several members of groups classified as extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Some notable arrests include:

As of Tuesday, 181 federal cases had been filed against those involved in the Capitol Hill siege, according to a database maintained by the Program on Extremism at George Washington University. The Department of Justice has received more 100,000 tips, including photos and videos taken the day of the riot, and says the number of people charged in its sweeping investigation is expected to swell. The analysis shows:

Hate crimes and those who commit them are defined differently by the FBI and Southern Poverty Law Center, and critics say the latter organization recklessly endangers peoples lives with broad definitions that lump conservative and extremist groups together, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks hate group activity by reviewing their publications; in direct reports from citizens, police agencies, field sources and the news media; and through its own investigations. It defines a hate group an organization or collection of individuals that based on its official statements or principles, the statements of its leaders, or its activities has beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.

The FBI defines a hate crime as one motivated by bias toward a persons race, religion or sexual orientation, and the agency relies on voluntary reporting by police agencies, which has drawn criticism from civil rights groups.

Absent full participation, the Anti-Defamation League says the total severity of the impact and damage caused by hate crimes cannot be fully measured. It pointed out on its website that 86 percent of 15,000 participating agencies didnt report a single hate crime to the FBI. Among them were at least 71 cities with populations over 100,000.

The Sikh Coalition has asked Congress to improve hate crime data collection, and the Arab American Institute says hate crimes against targeted groups are massively underreported. Despite being reported as the deadliest anti-Latino attack in American history, the group said on its website, a gunmans 2019 attack on shoppers from Mexico outside an El Paso, Texas, Walmart wasnt classified by the FBI as an anti-Hispanic attack, but as "anti-other race/ethnicity/ancestry.

A total 23 people died in the El Paso attack, and 22 of those fatalities are reflected in a 2019 FBI hate crime report that showed a record 51 fatal attacks motivated by bias (the 23rd El Paso victim died in 2020). The report was released in November.

The FBI said hate crimes rose to their highest levels in a decade in 2019, and though the percentage of increase was small just under 3 percent the offenses were more violent than in years prior. 2019 also was the third consecutive year when more than 7,000 hate crimes were reported, a trend that hadnt been seen since 2008.

In a summary of the report, the California-based Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism said increases in hate crime were far more precipitous among the most violent offenses homicides and assaults; those directed toward certain target groups, like Jews and Latinos; and in some of the nation's largest cities.

Police agencies in Virginia reported 163 hate crimes to the FBI in 2019.

The Southern Poverty Law Center attributed the decline in hate group numbers in 2020 to several factors, including the halt to in-person activities due to the pandemic, their migration away from mainstream social media; and the continuing collapse of the Ku Klux Klan, a group long associated with white supremacy, as younger extremists move into newer groups that dont carry the same stigma. Parents accused of child cruelty claim to be immune Moorish sovereign …

Posted By on April 14, 2023

EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) Two Georgia parents accused of child cruelty are claiming to be part of an extremist anti-government group that believes individuals cant be governed by state or federal authorities.

Thirty-year-old Hassan Sahih Bey and 25-year-old Tinka El were arrested on April 6 after a deputy responded to the pediatric intensive care unit at Childrens Hospital of Georgia, the Columbia County Sheriffs Office said.

After speaking with someone from the Department of Family and Childrens Services, the deputy learned one of the children had to be put on a respirator and had been diagnosed with rickets disease, a rare disease that can cause problems for childrens bone development. A lack of vitamin D or calcium is the most common cause of rickets. The child also had bone malformation due to malnutrition.

El told police she had two other children who were at home with their father, Bey.

Once Bey arrived at the hospital, law enforcement learned the two other children, who are 1 year and 1 week old, also needed to be hospitalized. The 1-year-old was also diagnosed with rickets, and the 1-week-old was found to be severely malnourished.

Both suspects claim to be members of the Moorish Sovereign Citizens Group. Members call themselves Moors and often incorporate the words bey and el into their names.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Moorish Sovereign Citizens Group came about in the 1990s as an offshoot of the anti-governmentmovement. Moors believe they have independence and sovereignty as individuals and, therefore, are immune to governance by authorities.

Moorish sovereigns espouse an interpretation of sovereign doctrine that African Americans constitute an elite class within American society with special rights and privileges that convey on them a sovereign immunity placing them beyond federal and state authority, the Southern Poverty Law Center writes of the extremist group.

Members of the group may use this logic to avoid paying taxes, registering cars, or even to defraud banks. In some cases, Moorish sovereign citizens have engaged in violence with law enforcement.

While the movement is still quite small, its seen a resurgence since 2009, according to the Anti-Defamation League, with their ideas spreading on social media.

Bey and El were both charged with three counts of child cruelty and one charge of giving false information to law enforcement.

Bond has been denied for both defendants.

Israel seeks US support for IDF buildup as expert predicts Iran strike …

Posted By on April 14, 2023

A top defense official sought United States support to bolster IDF forces as a security expert on Thursday predicted that Israel might have to strike Iran within the year to halt its nuclear program.

We held important meetings to promote significant projects focused on force buildup in the face of emerging security challenges first and foremost, the Iranian nuclear program, Defense Ministry Director-General Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Eyal Zamir said.

He spoke after a meeting with US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl in Washington, which took place as Israel remains in danger of an immediate war on one or all of three borders Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria after rockets were launched during the last week against Israel from all three fronts.

The IDFs Military Intelligence Directorate informed the upper echelon on Thursday that Israel was closer to war than to a restoration of calm, according to a report in Walla.

KAN News reported that the IDF is strengthening its air defense systems throughout the country, but that in an unusual way, it was orienting Iron Dome batteries in the direction of Lebanon and Syria, rather than keeping them focused more primarily on Gaza.

Former national security adviser Maj.-Gen. Yaakov Amidror warned against the dangers that Israel faced, both from Iran and from its two northern borders of Syria and Lebanon, in an interview he gave to Radio 103FM.

We need to prepare for the war for which the main component of the preparation would be the ability to execute a long-distance attack, Amidror said, adding that this was particularly important with respect to Iran.

It could be that within the next year, we would get to the point where we would have to strike Iran to stop its nuclear program, Amidror stated.

Israel would do this, even if it had to act alone without the United States, the former national security adviser said, explaining that it would likely receive arms and funding from Washington. The IDF has never relied on US involvement in such a strike and has planned to resolve its own security issues, he said.

There is no need to change that kind of self-reliance, Amidror explained.

He also warned against a pending war with the Iranian proxy group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

There would be a lot of damage to the home front in such a war with the Lebanese terrorist group, Amidror said.

These are two completely different wars, but for each one, the IDF has to be very well prepared given that they could break out in the next year, he explained.

Israels military deterrence has taken a hit as a result of the domestic turmoil over the judicial overhaul program, Amidror said. He referenced specifically the phenomenon of reservist soldiers who have threatened not to serve as a protest statement.

The world looks at the State of Israel differently, the major general said, adding that this was particularly true concerning nearby countries.

They do not understand how it can be that within the State of Israel, there are threats to dismantle the military capability. This is how they understand the refusal movement of those who oppose the [judicial] reform.

In an interview with Channel 14 on Thursday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that if its up to me, Iran will not have nuclear weapons, noting that Irans nuclear weapons program was advancing.

We will not let the Ayatollahs stop Jewish history. We will do everything that we need to do to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. We will do everything that we need to do alone or with others, he said, but if we need to fight alone, we will do that.

Netanyahu said that Israels enemies should not make the mistake of thinking that the domestic turmoil had weakened the Jewish state, noting that it had executed effective counter-strikes for all the rocket attacks against it.

He spoke specifically about the attempt by Hamas to launch rockets against Israel from bases in Lebanon.

Hamas will not open a new front in Lebanon, he said

We are always prepared for a war, the prime minister said, adding that Israel was so braced for it that if there was a measurement for such things, it would be 360 degrees of preparation.

We are operating in all fronts and showing our enemies that... it is not a good idea to open a war with Israel, Netanyahu said.

In Washington, Zamir spoke with Kahl about ways to strengthen Israels Qualitative Military Edge, according to the Defense Ministry. He was also slated to meet with officials in the Pentagon and the State Department.

Zamir said that in his Washington talks, I expressed the Israel Defense Ministrys appreciation for the American governments unwavering commitment to the State of Israel and its national defense and for ensuring Israels qualitative military edge in the region.

In Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp staged parades against Israel on Thursday, in advance of Fridays annual Al-Quds day, which calls for the liberation of Palestine, specifically Jerusalem from Israeli occupation.

Additional rallies are planned on Friday.

Irans Foreign Ministry called to terminate the savage crimes of Zionists.

The crimes of the usurper Zionist regime [and] organized [and] blatant violation of the primary principles of human rights [and] established rules [and] regulations of intl law as well as desecrating religious [and] Islamic sanctities and in particular the Al-Aqsa Mosque make it an urgent necessity for Muslims to get united and consolidated once again and support the heroic resistance of the Palestinian nation, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

Israels President Sees Hope for Judicial Compromise – New York Times

Posted By on April 14, 2023

Since Israels government announced plans in January to overhaul the judiciary, the country has been gripped by growing turmoil in the streets, disquiet in the military and warnings from its president, Isaac Herzog, of societal collapse and even civil war.

But now Mr. Herzog, who is overseeing negotiations to find a compromise, has a more hopeful message two weeks after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspended the overhaul to allow for a month of negotiations with the opposition.

In his first full interview on the subject with journalists, Mr. Herzog said this week that his negotiations were gaining momentum and that consensus was possible. He even hopes for a compromise that could resolve not only the debate over the judiciary but also other constitutional ambiguities that have gone unsolved since 1948, when Israels founders established the state without writing a formal constitution.

Its a potential for a constitutional moment, Mr. Herzog said. A moment where we can direct Israel into a stronger and more resilient structure.

Something, he added, which we didnt do since our founding 75 years ago.

As a figurehead president, Mr. Herzog, 62, has no formal authority to bring the sides together.

But he has used his long experience and public standing to assume the position of broker, taking on a larger leadership role than his largely ceremonial position usually allows for.

In the interview, Mr. Herzog warned Israels enemies against interpreting the countrys internal divisions as a sign of military weakness rowing back previous comments on the threat of civil war.

Armed groups in southern Lebanon fired rockets at Israel last week, after Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a powerful Iran-backed militia based in southern Lebanon, predicted that Israel would soon collapse. But Mr. Herzog warned Irans proxies not to try similar attacks on Friday, when Iran plans a national protest against Israels existence.

Dont fool yourselves, Mr. Herzog said. We have always been united when it comes to our defense and security. Israel is extremely strong and is capable of taking action if needed.

Mr. Herzogs projection of strength and unity was an unlikely dose of optimism after a fractious start to the year that shook many Israelis, including the president himself.

What to Know About Israels Judiciary Overhaul

A divisive proposal. Israel is in the throes of a grave political crisis over a contentious plan to overhaul the countrys judiciary. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus right-wing government contends the Supreme Court has unchecked power, but critics of the proposal say it goes too far. Here is what to know:

What is the government trying to do? Netanyahus governing coalition is first trying to change the makeup of the committee that selects judges by giving representatives and appointees of the government an automatic majority on the committee. The government also wants to drastically restrict the Supreme Courts ability to strike down laws that it deems unconstitutional.

What do opponents of the overhaul say? Critics say the plan would place unchecked power in the hands of the government of the day, remove protections afforded to individuals and minorities and deepen Israels divisions. They also fear that Netanyahu, who is standing trial on corruption charges, could use the changes to extricate himself from his legal troubles.

Why is Israel divided? In broad terms, the schism has divided Israelisinto two groups: those who want a more secular and pluralist state and those with a more religious and nationalist vision. To its critics, particularly ultra-Orthodox Jews, the Supreme Court is seen as the last bastion of the secular, centrist elite who dominated Israel during its earliest decades.

Who is protesting? The opposition has mainly been driven by secular centrists who fear the overhaul will threaten their freedoms, but there is also resistance from parts of the religious right who say the government has pushed too far and too fast. The plan has also drawn opposition from crucial components of Israeli society: the military, universities and trade unions.

What happens next? After a nationwide work stoppage and mass protests, Netanyahu announced a delay in the legislationto allow for negotiations and a possible compromise between his ruling coalition and the opposition parties. But many Israelis remained wary that the pause was merely a tactic to quell the civil unrest. It also failed to ease U.S.-Israeli tensions.

In the first week of 2023, days after taking office, Mr. Netanyahus far-right government announced plans to limit the Supreme Courts ability to countermand laws passed by Parliament, give the legislature greater power to overrule the court and allow the government more control over who gets to be a Supreme Court justice.

Critics fear that Mr. Netanyahu wants to reduce the judiciarys influence to avoid punishment in his corruption trial, a claim he has repeatedly rejected. Mr. Herzog who has the power to pardon Mr. Netanyahu denied in the interview that he was holding separate talks with the prime minister about pardoning him.

The impasse has led to one of the longest and largest protest waves in Israeli history.

In late March, after three months of mass demonstrations and amid a general strike that stopped planes leaving the countrys main airport, Mr. Netanyahu pulled back, suspending the overhaul until the next session of Parliament, which starts in late April.

That has provided breathing space for Mr. Netanyahu to begin negotiations with the opposition chaired and hosted by Mr. Herzog.

For the first time since the start of the crisis, high-level delegations from both sides have met several times at Mr. Herzogs official residence in Jerusalem in an attempt to thrash out a compromise.

Im carrying a certain historic burden on my shoulders, Mr. Herzog said. Im perhaps the only element in Israeli public life that all parties can feel free to come and speak to and confide with, he said.

Members of the delegations declined to discuss the negotiations on the record, but both sides have publicly stated their willingness to reach a consensus.

The mediation effort could still fail. The government advanced far enough with part of the overhaul that it could enact it within a single afternoon once Parliament returns from recess at the end of April. And Mr. Netanyahu must find a way of placating hard-line members of his coalition who reject any change to the overhauls current format.

The opposition negotiators also have a base to satisfy: a vast protest movement, some of which wants the overhaul scrapped entirely. The protest leaders are not at the negotiation table.

Shikma Bressler, one of those leaders, said she feared that the opposition might make too many concessions because with the government able to move forward so quickly it was negotiating with a gun held to our temple.

Mr. Herzog, a lawyer turned politician, comes from a family of public servants. His grandfather, Yitzhak, was a chief rabbi of Israel. His father, Chaim, was president for a decade, starting in 1983. And his brother Michael is the current Israeli ambassador to Washington.

Mr. Herzog headed several ministries before becoming leader of the opposition Labor Party for four years, starting in 2013.

But it is since becoming head of state in 2021 elected by a large majority of lawmakers that he has come into his own.

On the world stage, Mr. Herzog has become involved in Israeli diplomacy, both in public and behind the scenes.

A year ago, he helped revive ties with Turkey, becoming the first senior Israeli official to visit the country in years. And last fall, he helped resolve a disagreement with Germany over compensation for families of Israeli athletes killed at the Olympic Games in 1972.

But since Mr. Netanyahus government entered office in late December, Mr. Herzog has focused on Israel itself.

Even before the government formally introduced its proposal in early January, the president quietly tasked an experienced former civil servant, Oved Yehezkel, with coaxing both sides away from positions on the issue that would be unacceptable to either side.

Then, in February, Mr. Herzog began to host indirect negotiations in his formal residence allowing critics of the overhaul to meet there with government officials and their supporters.

That effort failed. Mr. Herzogs own compromise proposal published in March was also immediately rejected by the government.

But now both sides are back at the negotiating table, at meetings chaired by the president himself, and will meet again next week for marathon talks.

Herzog is a wizard at creating trust I have never met a person who does not love and does not trust him, Naftali Bennett, a right-wing former prime minister whose tenure overlapped with Mr. Herzogs first year in the presidency, said in a phone interview.

I cant think of a more suitable person than him, at such a dramatic moment, to lead the negotiations, said Mr. Bennett, who is no longer in politics and is not involved in the negotiations.

Though a patchwork of Israeli laws have taken on a quasi-constitutional status, Israel has never had a single written constitution.

That ambiguity has led to recurrent friction over the balance of power between the different parts of government, religious and secular visions of the state, the states responsibilities to ultra-Orthodox Jews, and the contribution that ultra-Orthodox Jews should make to state institutions like the military.

Mr. Herzog said that many of those issues might now be addressed, but declined to give full details to avoid jeopardizing the talks.

He is optimistic, though. The government has signaled it could wait until late summer for a compromise, he said.

Theres a lot of good will in the room since we started the negotiations two weeks ago, Mr. Herzog said.

Im not nave, he said. But, I still give it a chance.

Anti-Defamation League Blasted for Becoming Just Another Tool for the Left

Posted By on April 12, 2023

Like so many other once revered institutions, the ADL has been taken over by progressives and has strayed from its original mission.

Professor Jacobson is quoted in this article from the New York Post:

Inside the fight for ADL, which some Jewish critics call a tool of Democrats

The Anti-Defamation Leagues Jonathan Greenblatt has incited a considerable amount of heat and hate during his eight-year tenure as director of the Jewish lobbying group.

And some of that hate is coming from an unexpected place: within the Jewish community.

The ADL has raised tens of millions by talking about anti-Semitism and how theyre focused on anti-Semitism, Gerald Posner told The Post. But in the last seven years, theyve actually taken on a number of issues that are unrelated to their core mission racism, Dreamers, criminal justice reform and more, all of which are all the same talking points of the most left and progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Posner and his wife Patricia, both Jewish writer/journalists based in Miami Beach, have become so disillusioned with the current iteration of the ADL that they recently decided to form their own pro-Jewish organization.

Called Antisemitism Watch, the Posners say their organization is non-partisan unlike the ADL, which they feel has become indistinguishable from Democratic Party talking points.

Critics have blasted Greenblatt a one-time aide to President Obama who earned $575,716 in 2021 for having what they claim is a zealous conservative-crushing and Democratic Party-loving agenda rather than focusing just on pro-Jewish issues.

No More ADL. When it comes to Jews, the organization now does more harm than good, blared a headline in the Jewish online magazine The Tablet last fall

Last year, the ADL said it was reviewing its education content after a Fox News investigation found concepts from CRT as well as far-left ideas within ADLs education wing. William Jacobson, founder of the conservative site Legal Insurrection, said the ADLs lesson plans reflect how ADL has lost its way.

An ADL spokesman denied that the organization was teaching CRT but added, that said, we are far from perfect and clearly there is content among our curricular materials that is misaligned with ADLs values and strategy. We intend to address this issue immediately and openly.

Crises on multiple fronts threaten Benjamin Netanyahus grip on power

Posted By on April 10, 2023

On Friday afternoon, Israels prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, found himself standing at the side of a remote road in the vast desert valley that runs the length of the occupied West Banks frontier with Jordan.

Along with his defence minister, Yoav Galant, Netanyahu was inspecting the scene of a shooting attack earlier in the day that killed British-Israeli sisters Maia and Rina Dee, 20 and 15, and left their 45-year-old mother Lucy fighting for her life. An Israel Defence Forces (IDF) search for the perpetrator is still under way.

For this challenge as well, we are standing united, unified, sure of our righteousness, Netanyahu said in comments broadcast by Israeli television. We will act together with total backing for our forces.

Unfortunately for the prime minister, his remarks rang hollow for many Israelis. This week Israel has faced flare-ups in violence on almost every front East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria.

The security establishment has also been unnerved by the sudden rapprochement between Saudi Arabia the regions geopolitical heavyweight, with whom Israel is seeking warmer ties and the countrys arch enemy, Iran.

As if the intersecting border crises were not enough to deal with, Israel is also undergoing unprecedented upheaval at home sparked by the governments bitterly contested plan to overhaul the judiciary.

Dozens of former senior defence, security and intelligence officials have opposed the proposals weakening the supreme court on the grounds they are anti-democratic. Israels crucial military reservists, including almost all of those serving in its most important air force unit, have joined the nationwide protests and said they will refuse to attend for service, setting alarm bells ringing over the reliability of the chain of command and operational capacity.

Galant might have been standing by his side as the pair pledged to find the Dee sisters killer, but two weeks ago, Netanyahu fired him after he became the first senior government official to voice objections to the judicial changes.

Public pressure quickly forced the prime minister to back down, and announce that legislation weakening the supreme court would be postponed until after the Knessets Passover recess. But the lingering uncertainty over Galants position and the appointment of the inflammatory national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, does not exactly convey strength and stability particularly now.

Leaked Pentagon documents that surfaced on Saturday suggesting the Mossad, Israels spy agency, encouraged its staff and the Israeli public to participate in the protest movement, have added to a growing perception among Israels many foes that such internal discord represents an opportunity.

I served in the army for decades, and I did not see behaviour as reckless as that of Netanyahu now, Moshe Yaalon, a former defence minister and IDF chief of staff, said in an address at a protest in Tel Aviv on Saturday night.

His obsessive plot to overturn Israels democracy represents an immediate threat to Israels security Our enemies are watching, and our deterrence is waning.

Despite corruption scandals and a colourful private life, during his previous five stints as prime minister Netanyahu was generally seen as a safe pair of hands when it came to Israels security.

Now, even among the rightwing public that voted in the current coalition of extremist and ultra-religious parties, dwindling support suggests that image is fading, and the Israeli leader could once again be forced out of office. A total of 69% of voters gave the government a bad grade on its first 100 days in office, according to polling released by Israels Channel 12 on Sunday.

Hebrew media reported over the weekend that government sources had suggested they would be forced to launch a major military operation in the coming weeks, after the conclusion of the sensitive overlapping Passover and Ramadan holiday period, in order to bolster the coalitions legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

Israels current government was elected on a platform promising order and security. So far, they have delivered the exact opposite.
