(December 25, 2022 / JNS) Israels Chief Sephardic Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef will chair the committee that will select the next Israel Defense Forces chief rabbi, Kan 11 reported on Saturday, adding that the change is part of a coalition agreement between Likud and the Religious Zionism Party.

Yosefs committee will include a government representative, the head of a yeshiva, two yeshiva organization representatives, the head of the IDF Personnel Directorate and a former chief military rabbi.

The committee that will determine the identity of the chief military rabbi will be subordinate to the Chief Rabbinate, Walla said in a report on Sunday.

This has far-reaching significance, since the Military Rabbinate has until now been independent in its rulings, and on many issues it had different stances from the Chief Rabbinate, the report added.

Such issues include conversion, the burial of non-Jewish soldiers, operational conduct on Shabbat and womens IDF service.

National Unity Party member of Knesset and former IDF Chief of Staff and State Party member Lt. Gen. (res.) Gadi Eisenkot slammed the change in the selection process.

The decision to remove the IDF chief of staff and defense ministers authority in selecting the chief military rabbi stems from the political weakness of Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu, Eisenkot said. He accused Netanyahus political partners of being drunk on power.

Beyond Sufganiyot and Latkes: 6 Delicious Recipes to Add Some Sephardic …

Both of us love connecting to our Judaism through cooking. Ellie has written and edited cookbooks on the nexus of Jewish identity and food, while Crystal enjoys modifying and experimenting with recipes, especially challah and pies. As Hanukkah is deeply entwined with food, especially fried food, we've found some delicious Sephardic recipes to add to your celebration, sourced with permission from Hlne Jawhara Pier's cookbook, Sephardi: Cooking the History. Hlne says that learning about Sephardic recipes is important, partially because, "transmission is at the heart of the Jewish tradition... learning [to make Sephardic] recipes is important [to ensure our] culinary heritage." So, get some oil ready and join us as we delve into the delicious variety of fried desserts that Sephardic cuisine has to offer!

1. Murakkaba: The Moroccan Mufleta

This dish's name comes from the Arabic word for "composed," which is fitting as the impressiveness of this recipe does not necessarily come from the dough or the topping, but the way it's made. This sweet fried dessert has been prepared in much the same way by Moroccan Sephardic Jews for generations: frying layers of dough together by flipping the confection upside down when each new layer is added.

2. Hojuelas, Fazuelos, or Fijuelas

This dish is a familiar Purim favorite in Sephardic culture. Just as this treat is known by many names, it can be made for many different holidays. This dish is made of thin rolled strips of pastry dough which is fried and covered in sugar. The fact that they are fried in oil makes them perfect for Hanukkah, while their characteristic shape is reminiscent of Esther's megillah, the scroll read during Purim. Whenever you choose to enjoy these, you will love their tenderness and the way they melt in your mouth!

3. Isfeng: The Andalusian Donut

This pastry, also known as sfeng, is commonly made by Jews and Muslims in Morocco and Israel. The recipedates to13th century Al-Andalus. The dish is now prepared year-round by street food vendors in Morocco but is considered a Hanukkah staple among Moroccan and Israeli Jewish households.

4. Nuegados: Orange and Honey Fried Dough

This dessert hails from northwestern Spain. A little-known fact about nuegados is that they were used as a litmus test for Spanish Jews and conversos during the Spanish Inquisition. Merely giving these delicious pastries to someone could cause someone to be reported to the authorities, which was what happened to Diego Arias from Medina de Campo in 1490. Nuegados are also mentioned in the book "La Lozana Andaluzia" by Spanish converso Francisco Delicado. When the main character flees from Andalusia to Rome, she tells the women there how she learned to make these treats from her grandmother.

5. Maqrut: Fried Diamonds with Dates and Walnuts

This recipe is another treat that Moroccan Jews and Muslims have enjoyed since the 13th century when it originated in Al-Andalus. These tasty tidbits are now tied to both Jewish and Muslim holidays. Muslims eat this fried honey pastry to break their Ramadan fast, while Sephardim in Morocco and France eat the same dish for Rosh HaShanah and Hanukkah.

6. Neulas Encanonadas: Brick Pastry Rolls with Almonds and Honey

Our final recipe dates back at least to 15th century Spain. In the city of Almazan, conversos were reported to the Inquisition tribunal for preparing these cigar-shaped pastries during Semana Santa, a feast that coincides with Passover. Even though this dish may not be traditionally associated with Hanukkah, its fried goodness will add a new dimension of sweetness to your Hanukkah spread.

We hope you've enjoyed learning about these delicious treats, and the stories behind them. If you're looking for even more tasty recipes for your Hanukkah celebrations, check out our Hanukkah recipe collection and video cooking tutorials!

Zionism – ADL

Posted By on December 29, 2022

Zionism is the movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, the land of Israel. The vast majority of Jews around the world feel a connection or kinship with Israel, whether or not they explicitly identify as Zionists, and regardless of their opinions on the policies of the Israeli government.

While there has been a continuous Jewish presence in the land of Israel over the millennia, the yearning to return to Zion, the biblical term for both the land of Israel and Jerusalem, has been a cornerstone of Jewish communal life since the Romans violently colonized the land, sending Jews into exile two thousand years ago. An earlier exile by the Babylonians produced perhaps the most well-known lamentation By the rivers of Babylon, there we wept as we remembered Zion. That connection between Jews and the land, and the hope for repatriation, is deeply embedded in Jewish prayer, ritual, literature and culture.

What is known as modern Zionism emerged in the mid-19th century in tandem with the rise of the nation-state and widespread national liberation movements across Europe. In the case of the Jews, it was also in response to a long history of intense anti-Jewish hatred, persecution, and discrimination in countries and societies across the world where Jews lived, including in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Its advocates believed that a modern Jewish state would provide Jews with a safe haven from the bigotry and endangerment they suffered perennially as a minority culture among non-Jewish majority cultures, and ensure that Jews have the same right to nationhood and self-determination as any other people, along with the same protections that are typically afforded to other nations. Zionism was also a cultural and national renaissance movement which sought to enable the Jewish people to revive their language, Hebrew, and reestablish self-determination over their traditions, culture, religion and education.

In the late 1800s, the father of modern Zionism, Austrian journalist Theodor Herzl, consolidated various strands of Zionist thought into an organized political movement, advocating for international recognition of an independent and sovereign Jewish state in the land of Israel.

Today, with a Jewish sovereign state a reality, Zionists believe in and support the right of the democratic State of Israel to exist as a Jewish homeland. Israel is the only Jewish state in the world. Being a Zionist is distinct from supporting the policies of the government of Israel.

Zionism is a big tent movement that includes those across the spectrum from progressives, moderates and conservatives and those who are apolitical. There are Zionists who are critical of Israeli policies, just as there are Zionists who rarely voice disagreement with the Israeli government. There are diverse views among Zionists about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, about how to promote peace, whether to support a two-state solution, and about approaches to Israeli settlements. Being critical of Israeli policies is no more anti-Zionist than being critical of American policies is anti-American.

Zionism does not preclude support for Palestinian self-determination and statehood. For some Zionists, support for a two-state solution is the realization of self-determination for Jews and Palestinians alike.

There are also millions of non-Jews who consider themselves Zionists and supporters of the Jewish state, who are motivated by factors including religion, history, security or politics.

The Knesset Arrangements Committee on Sunday approved the requests of the Otzma Yehudit and Noam parties to split from the Religious Zionism party after the three ran together on the same list during the election for the 25th Knesset.

Noam chairman MK Avi Maoz said during the debate, "We are fulfilling an agreement that was made before the elections, which states that immediately after the elections we will split and we are keeping to our agreements."

MK Yitzhak Wasserlauf of Otzma Yehudit said: "We also agreed [to run in] a technical bloc and wish to split off."

The Noam and Otzma Yehudit parties have functioned independently of the Religious Zionism party since the elections on November 1. Both parties have conducted their own negotiations with Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party o the makeup and priorities of the new government.

The Otzma Yehudit party held its first faction meeting last week together with its new party members, and did not participate in the Religious Zionism faction meeting. Avi Maoz also did not attend the Religious Zionism faction meeting and gave a statement to the media which was separate from Religious Zionism chairman MK Bezalel Smotrich's statement.

Netanyahu government reconnects with "revisionist Zionism"

Posted By on December 29, 2022

The agreement struck between the representative of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud), and that of his future National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit), provides that the latter will head an autonomous armed force.

The Ministry of National Security will take over the attributions of the former Ministry of Internal Security while acquiring new powers. It will supervise not only the national police (Mishtara), but also the border police (Magav) which until now was answerable to the Ministry of Defense. The agreement also provides for the creation of a large-scale National Guard and a reinforced presence of reserve troops within the border police.

Mr.Ben-Gvir is a Kahanist, meaning a disciple of Rabbi Meir Kahane who demands the expulsion of Arab citizens from Israel and the establishment of a theocracy. He makes no secret of wanting to use the border police to expel Arab populations, be they Muslim or Christian. The expansion of the border police will depend on the budget allocated to it by parliament (Knesset).

Itamar Ben-Grivs party will also be in charge of the Ministry for the Development of the Negev and the Galilee, whose environmental police will be able to impose its law on the Bedouins. It will chair the Knessets Internal Security Committee, the Knessets special committee for the Israeli Citizens Fund (which oversees state revenue from gas drilling), in addition to filling the slot of deputy minister in the Ministry of Economy.

Outgoing Defense Minister Beny Gantz remarked that establishing "a private army for Ben-Gvir in the [West Bank] is dangerous...and will create real security holes."

Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to sign two more agreements involving two other far-right formations.

One must understand what is happening and not allow oneself to be blinded by preconceived ideas. There are several forms of Zionism. Benjamin Netanyahu was a revisionist Zionist, follower of Vladimir Jabotinsky (of whom his father Benzion Netanyahu had served as private secretary). As a young man, he professed that Palestine is a land without a people for a people without a land. He was, consequently, in favor of expelling all Arabs. Furthermore, he advocated the idea that the State of Israel should expand from the Nile to the Euphrates (Eretz Israel). However, he proved to be rather moderate during his 16 years as Prime Minister. He was considered to have evolved. In reality, he had simply adapted to his conservative majorities and to the spirit of the times. Today, when the Straussians are in power in the United States behind Joe Biden and when his personal friend Volodymyr Zelensky leads the integral nationalists in Ukraine, Benjamin Netanyahu has found at last the opportunity to make his youthful dreams come true.

In the coming months, anti-Arab pogroms will take place in Israel, Jewish settlements will sprout on the fields of Arab peasants, and Israeli weapons will be sent to Ukraine. These are not separate issues. It is the same ideology that will be at work in the US State Department, in Tel Aviv and in Kiev.

Some GOP leaders say Republican Santos ‘lied’ about career and Jewish …

Rep-elect George Santos (R-NY3) acknowledges inventing significant parts of his life story before winning a House seat on Long Island, but says he'll still take office next month.

Congressman-elect George Santos from New York now acknowledges he misled voters about big parts of his life story before winning a seat on Long Island last month.

"A lot of people overstate on their resumes or twist a little bit or (sic) engranduate themselves," Santos told WABC radio. "I'm not saying I'm not guilty of that."

Santos hasn't responded to NPR's repeated requests for an interview, but speaking with conservative media outlets, he downplayed the significance of his deceptions, describing them as "embellishments" and insisting he'll take office next month as scheduled.

"I'm not a fraud. I'm not a criminal who defrauded the entire country and made up this fictional character and ran for Congress," Santos told WABC.

During the campaign, Santos described graduating from Baruch College, said he worked for Goldman Sachs and claimed to own valuable real estate properties.

He now acknowledges none of that is true. He also admits his claim that four of his employees died in the 2016 Pulse night club shooting in Orlando, Fla., was false.

A growing number of critics, including some in the Republican Party, say Santos' outright lied when he claimed to be "a proud Jewish American" and said members of his family escaped the Holocaust.

"His story about having Holocaust heritage and Ukrainian heritage, I just don't see any evidence to support it in his family tree," Megan Smolenyak, a forensic genealogist who examined Santos' family records, said in an interview with NPR.

In a statement Monday, the Republican Jewish Coalition said Santos "deceived us and misrepresented his heritage."

One of New York's most influential Republicans, Nassau County GOP Chairman Joseph Cairo Jr., issued his own statement Monday, blasting Santos for "lies" that "broke the public trust."

"The damage that his lies have caused to many people, especially those who have been impacted by the Holocaust, are profound," Cairo said.

But Republican leaders stopped short of urging Santos to step aside and legal experts say the scandal is unlikely to prevent Santos from being sworn in next month.

"He's constitutionally entitled to his seat," said Richard Briffault, an expert on campaign law at Columbia University, who noted the Constitution doesn't disqualify candidates for lying.

One legal wrinkle could be the roughly $700,000 Santos says he loaned his campaign. According to Briffault, federal law prohibits candidates from misstating the source of campaign funds.

"It would be serious if this was not truly a loan but this was somehow a campaign finance contribution from other people," he said.

Santos now acknowledges he struggled financially in recent years and at times couldn't pay his debts. Some Democrats have called for an investigation into the source of money Santos says he contributed to his race.

"All of Mr. Santos's disclosures must be thoroughly investigated by the Federal Election Commission...for campaign finance fraud," said Rep.-elect Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat who won a House seat last month, in a statement.

On Monday, Santos told WABC the campaign contribution was proper: "That is the money that I paid myself through my company," Santos said.

In interviews, Santos repeatedly blamed growing questions about his past on what he describes as the liberal media and said he still has the support of voters in his Long Island district.

Santos' victory in November was part of a surprising red wave in New York state that helped Republicans win a fragile national majority in the House.

Santos has also pledged to support Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who is still scrambling to rally enough GOP votes to serve as House speaker.

Don't Holocaust deniers present facts to back up their arguments?

PART B

What are some of the main claims of Holocaust revisionists. How are they rebutted?

07.

The Holocaust was merely Allied propaganda.

08.

There is no proof that the Holocaust occurred.

09.

The estimates of Jewish losses during the Holocaust are greatly exaggerated. There were never even 6 million Jews in Germany.

10.

Didn't the International Committee for the Red Cross report that only 300,000 people had perished in the German concentration camps, not all of them Jews?

11.

Nazi policy towards the Jews was emigration, not extermination.

12.

Not a single document has been found with Hitler's signature ordering the extermination of the Jews.

13.

Zyklon B was a fumigant. It wasn't a practical agent for mass murder.

14.

If Zyklon B is so highly toxic, how could bodies have been removed from gas chambers only minutes after execution?

15.

Zyklon B is so highly flammable that a single spark from the ventilation system or the immense heat created by the nearby furnaces would have resulted in an explosion.

16.

There is no proof whatsoever that the Nazis ever murdered anyone in gas chambers.

17.

American engineer and execution 'expert', Fred Leuchter, proved that the 'so-called' gas chambers at Auschwitz could not have been used for their 'alleged' purpose.

18.

Didn't Simon Wiesenthal himself state that there were no extermination camps in Germany?

19.

For years, the death statistics at Auschwitz-Birkenau had been put at well over 3 million. Recently, however, a memorial plaque at the former death camp estimates Jewish losses closer to 1 million. Shouldn't the new figures imply that Jewish losses for the Holocaust are much lower than previously thought?

20.

The Diary of Anne Frank is a fraud. I t was written in ball point pen, which was not in common use until after her death.

01.

What is Holocaust Denial?

A 01.

Holocaust Denial, also known as Holocaust Revisionism, is the attempt to deny or trivialize the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany against Jews and others during World War II.

For an internationally accepted definition see the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Holocaust Denial and Distortion.

02.

Why do some people deny the Holocaust?

A 02.

Most Holocaust deniers want to wash away the stain of Nazism in an attempt to make Nazism an acceptable political alternative today. Many have present and past ties with hate groups and are trying to shed that image by masquerading themselves as seekers of historical truth, rather than merchants of bigotry. Holocaust denial is an important tool for anti-Semites. On July 24, 1996, Harold Covington, leader of the National Socialist White People's Party, explained why:

"Take away the Holocaust and what do you have left? Without their precious Holocaust, what are the Jews? Just a grubby little bunch of international bandits and assassins and squatters who have perpetrated the most massive, cynical fraud in human history..."

Holocaust denial is an updated version of an alleged Jewish conspiracyin which Jews use lies and extortion to gain advantage of everyone else. The common denominator to all Holocaust deniers is anti-Semitism.

This big-lie is especially painful for Holocaust survivors and all those who lost loved ones to Nazi mass murder who are confronted by people who deny their suffering and loss.

03.

What are the basic views of Holocaust deniers?

A 03.

Holocaust deniers argue that Nazi Germany was the victim of a conspiracy, contrived by the Allies to brand Nazi Germany the villain of World War II. They maintain that the U.S. and Great Britain concocted wild atrocity stories about the Nazis to cover up their own war crimes. Jews, they claim, joined the conspiracy in order to prey upon the sympathies of the world and extort money from post-war Germany in order to establish the State of Israel. (Arab leaders have sometimes resorted to Holocaust denial in an attempt to delegitimize the existence of the State of Israel). To one degree or another, Holocaust revisionists claim the Holocaust is an exaggeration, if not an outright hoax. Many argue that Hitler's intentions were peaceful, and that the real villains of the war were actually U.S. President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill and the Jews.

04.

How can Holocaust Revisionists deny Nazi atrocities given all the evidence?

A 04.

Holocaust revisionists claim the survivors of the Holocaust lied about their experiences, that Allied soldiers who liberated the camps exaggerated what they saw, that the films and photos of Nazi atrocities-even those captured from the Nazis themselves- were made up later, that captured Nazi documents were forged, and that confessions made by the accused were coerced. They deny the existence of the gas chambers used by the Nazis to murder millions and that they were built by the Allies after the war to make Germany look bad. Moreover, the Jews who did die in concentration camps were actually victims of disease. In fact, they argue that the Allies should be held for those deaths, because their bombing attacks prevented the delivery of supplies and medicines from reaching the camps.

05.

Are Holocaust Deniers historians?

A 05.

Although Holocaust Revisionists would like people to believe they are serious students of history, virtually none of them are historians, nor are any of them recognized as such in the academic world. Perhaps the most famous Holocaust Revisionist author is David Irving, who holds no university degree. In 1996, Irving sued American scholar in England, Deborah Lipstadt for libel. Lipstadt had accused Irving of being a Hitler apologist and Nazi sympathizer as well as dishonest researcher. Irving was found by the British court to be a "falsifier of history, anti-Semitic, and a racist who he associated with right-wing extremists who promoted neo-Nazism." The trial concluded with verdict for Lipstadt.

06.

Don't Holocaust deniers present facts to back up their arguments?

A 06.

The claims of Holocaust deniers are grounded in flawed research, biased statements and, in many cases, deliberately falsified evidence. At the same time, they deny the authenticity of documents, eyewitness testimonies, films and photos that historians have concluded to be authentic. Holocaust Revisionists often copy the practices of genuine scholars by holding their own conventions or citing the works of other Holocaust deniers -as if they were facts- all in the attempt to deceive the public.

07.

The Holocaust was merely Allied propaganda.

A 07.

The Allies actually ignored reports filtering out of Europe about the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators. Even when convinced of their veracity, they tried to withhold the information from the public. On August 8, 1942, Dr. Gerhart Riegner, the representative of the World Jewish Congress in Geneva, Switzerland, asked the U.S. delegation in Switzerland to relay information about Germany's plan to exterminate all European Jews under its control to American Jewish leader, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. The information had been given to Riegner by a highly-placed German official. Instead of relaying the message, the U.S. State Department actually withheld it and ordered its Swiss delegation not to relay any such reports in the future.

In the same year, a member of the Polish underground Jan Karski, had secretly been smuggled into a German concentration camp in Poland. Making his way out, he was sent to London by the Underground to deliver his report on the horrors he witnessed. Karski spoke with both Roosevelt and Churchill. History records, however, that Karski's pleas were largely dismissed.

One need only check the major newspapers of the period to realize how little attention was paid to Nazi atrocities. If the Holocaust was merely "propaganda," why did the Allies go to such lengths to downplay it?

08.

There is no proof that the Holocaust occurred.

A 08.

No crime in history has been as well-documented as the Holocaust. Proof of the Holocaust is multi-faceted. It is demonstrated by a myriad of documents, the majority of them Nazi-authored, captured by Allied troops before the Germans had a chance to destroy them. Included are detailed reports of mass shootings and gassings. Some 3,000 documents on the destruction of Europe's Jewish community by the Nazis were, in fact, presented by the prosecution before war crimes tribunals at Nuremberg.

The first-hand testimony of survivors who lived through the horrors of the death camps as well as the reports and confessions by the perpetrators leave little doubt as to the nature of Hitler's "Final Solution." Horrifying films and photos of killing operations and their aftermath can only begin to give us a picture of the extent of Nazi bestiality; as do the reports, photos and films taken by the liberators. Allied officers and troops were sickened by what they saw at sites of slaughter they had just liberated.

It is important to note, that no Nazi war crimes suspect who stood trial in the post- war years for their misdeeds ever claimed that the crimes of which they were accused were fictional. They instead argued that they were "only following orders."

The evidence is, in fact, so overwhelming that on October 9, 1981, Judge Thomas T. Johnson of the California Superior Court, took judicial notice of the Holocaust ruling that, "The Holocaust is not reasonably subject to dispute. It is capable of immediate and accurate determination by resort to resources of reasonable indisputable accuracy. It is simply a fact."

09.

The estimates of Jewish losses during the Holocaust are greatly exaggerated. There were never even 6 million Jews in Germany.

A 09.

It is true that Germany had fewer than 600,000 Jews when Hitler came to power in 1933. The majority of Jews murdered by the Nazis, however, did not live in Germany. They resided in the countries which Germany invaded during the war, especially Poland and areas of the former Soviet Union, where millions of Jews once made their homes. In fact, the Protocol of the Wannsee Conference (Jan. 20, 1942) a German document outlining the Nazi plan to annihilate European Jewry, lists over 11 million Jews throughout the continent.

The 6 million figure can be demonstrated by comparing Europe's Jewish population before and after the war. Even after making allowances for those who fled Europe and others who could be expected to die due to natural causes, there are nearly 6,000,000 people who cannot be accounted for.

Authentic German documents confirm the slaughter of Jews in the millions. The famous "Korherr Report" (named after Richard Korherr, chief statistician for the SS) puts the number of Jewish losses at more than 2,454,000 by the end of 1942 alone. The war in Europe would not end until May, 1945.

The Anglo-American Commission of Enquiry, meeting in April 1946, put the total Jewish Holocaust losses at 5,721,500. On the basis of wartime statistical reports on ghettos, concentration camps and mass murder operations carried out by the Nazis, historian and international jurist, Jacob Robinson, arrived at a figure of 5,820,960. German historian, Helmut Krausnick, put the number of Jewish losses nearer to seven million. While the exact figure will never be known, scholars of the Holocaust find the rounded-off figure of six million to be in line with all the evidence.

Jacob Mortimer Rothschild was born in August of 1911. Inspired by the rabbi of his childhood synagogue (Samuel Goldenson), who fought against exploitation of workers in Pittsburgh, Rothschild entered Hebrew Union College in 1927. He was ordained in 1936, but after a few stints at different synagogues, he entered the army as a chaplain in 1942.

It was after he completed his military service in 1946 that he came to The Temple, taking the pulpit that Rabbi Marx had held for over half a century. Having grown up in the north, and still carrying the example of his childhood rabbi, Rabbi Rothschild was immediately disturbed by the racism and segregation of the South.

In 1947, he took the opportunity of his High Holy Days sermon to denounce segregation. This was a marked shift from the tenure of Rabbi Marx. For the 51 years prior, The Temple had faced a community rife with anti-Semitism and danger, and in response they went out of their way to strike a tentative balance with their gentile neighbors. Rabbi Marx had avoided confrontational rhetoric and avoided conflicts whenever possible.

Bigotry and prejudice were still a very real threat in the 1940s, but Rabbi Rothschild felt passionately that the moral compass of Judaism demanded an active response to the injustice of the times. His activism was slow, in the beginning, but over time congregants of The Temple came to expect his sermons on racial justice.

Rabbi Rothschild also shifted some of the classical Reform practices of his predecessor. He gently reinstated some more traditional practices and encouraged members of The Temple to observe those rituals he considered critical to Jewish identity. Such was the change at The Temple as we entered the second half of the century.

Christian Outreach

One element that he continued from Marxs tenure was outreach to Atlantas Christian clergy. He joined a series of civic and interfaith organizations. Rothschild also went even further, instituting a daylong Institute for the Christian Clergy, hosted at The Temple each February. A single point of controversy was Rothschilds insistence that black ministers be invited to all such interfaith events. He often asked black leaders to lead educational events at The Temple, in spite of those who feared such actions would elicit retribution from pro-segregation whites.

Civil Rights Activism & The Temple Bombing

That retribution finally arrived on the morning of October 12, 1958. Fifty sticks of dynamite were placed by the northern entrance to The Temple, exploding a massive hole in the buildings outer wall. Luckily, the only damage was to the building, and nobody was harmed in the blast.

The Temple bombing, however, marked a major turning point in the history of The Temple. Rabbi Rothschilds efforts to partner with leaders of the larger gentile community, to foster a climate of moderation, paid massive dividends on that day in 1958.

Leaders from all walks of life came out in support of The Temple. In stark contrast to the popular anti-Semitism of the early 20th century, public opinion was also in support of Jewish community. The mayor of Atlanta, William B. Hartsfield famously stood in the rubble of The Temple alongside Rabbi Rothschild. The photograph hangs in The Temple to this day.

While nobody was ever convicted of the bombing, the event and the response of those in the community strengthened the supporters of non-violence and racial justice. Rabbi Rothschilds activism actually increased after the bombing. The Temple members wholeheartedly rallied around him, taking up leadership positions in civic and political organizations that would ultimately lead to a peaceful integration of Atlantas schools in the 1960s.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. became friends with Rabbi Rothschild in ensuing years as well. In 1964, it was Rothschild who helped organize a banquet in Kings honor after he won the Nobel Peace Prize. After Kings assassination, it was again Rabbi Rothschild who delivered the eulogy at a memorial service organized by the combined clergy of Atlanta.

Indeed, Rabbi Rothschild continued to be an outspoken critic of segregation and racism and an outspoken supporter of the non-violence espoused by Dr. King. This was true right up until December 31, 1973, when Rabbi Rothschild succumbed to a heart attack.

His legacy, a fiery support of human decency and social justice, remains the foundation of The Temple to this day.
