Synagogue Gunman Had 'Good Heart': Friend

Posted By on February 17, 2015

COPENHAGEN, Denmark The gunman accused of killing two and injuring five in attacks at a freedom of speech event and a synagogue was "loyal" and had "a good heart," according to a friend.

Omar Abdelhamid Hussein, who was named in a Danish court as the main suspect in the shootings, was known to police and had recently been in jail, authorities said. He was fatally shot by police after opening fire on officers who were investigating Sunday's attacks in Copenhagen.

"I have nothing bad to say about Omar, because I didn't get that impression of him," said Mark Undall, who knew Hussein for seven years as a fellow kickboxer.

"I experienced Omar as a normal young man, who was loyal towards his friends and who had a good heart," Udall told NBC News. "His alleged actions are something, which I can't relate to nor recognize."

Copenhagen has been on high alert since Saturday's attacks, and nervousness was underlined early Tuesday when a suspicious package left outside one of the crime scenes caused a security alert.

Police rushed to the cafe which had hosted the free speech event, and removed a large transparent envelope which they later confirmed contained no explosives.

Earlier, tens of thousands gathered at torch-lit memorials around Denmark to commemorate the victims and promote understanding between communities.

"It's very moving," said Maya Moeller, who attended a huge vigil in Copenhagen. "We have to remember not to be mad at every Muslim in Denmark."

Hussein was identified in court Monday as the main suspect, a lawyer told NBC News. Police have said the gunman was a 22-year-old Danish man, but they have not confirmed his identity.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - The Danish gunman who attacked a free-speech seminar and a synagogue in Copenhagen was released about two weeks ago from a jail where he may have been radicalized while serving time for a vicious stabbing.

As Denmark mourned the two victims, these and other troubling details emerged Monday about Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein's path to the country's worst terror spree in three decades.

El-Hussein was arrested 15 months ago in a vicious knife attack on a train passenger, and while he was awaiting trial, a change in his behavior last summer set off enough "alarm bells" for jail authorities to alert PET, Denmark's counter-terror agency, a source close to the investigation told AP.

Such warnings usually set in motion counter-radicalization efforts, such as counseling in jail. It wasn't immediately clear how aware the court was of this issue before El-Hussein was convicted of a lesser charge.

Sentenced to the time he had already served, he was released about two weeks ago, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because police haven't officially identified the gunman.

"We are working on finding out what has happened," PET spokeswoman Lotte Holmstrup said Monday.

The agency's director, Jens Madsen, also wouldn't elaborate, but he confirmed Sunday that the agency had been aware of the gunman, and that El-Hussein may have been inspired by last month's attacks by Islamic extremists in Paris that killed 17 people.

The 22-year-old opened fire at a cultural center and a synagogue - targets that resembled the Paris attackers' rampage at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper and a Jewish grocery store - before he was killed in a gun battle with a SWAT team early Sunday. His victims included a Danish documentary filmmaker and a Jewish security guard; five police officers were wounded.

Denmark's prime minister and crown prince and foreign dignitaries joined about 30,000 people honoring the victims in the bitter Monday evening cold outside the Krudttoenden cultural center, whose name in Danish translates to "powder keg."

Danish police kill 22-year-old suspected of Copenhagen shootings

Posted By on February 17, 2015

COPENHAGEN, Denmark Police shot dead a 22-year-old Danish-born gunman on Sunday after he killed two people at a Copenhagen synagogue and an event promoting free speech in actions possibly inspired by an attack on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, authorities said.

Spy chief Jens Madsen said the gunman was known to intelligence services prior to the shooting and had probably acted alone. Police said he had a record of violence, gang-related activities and weapons possession.

Two civilians a synagogue guard and a filmmaker were killed and five police were wounded in the two separate attacks in the Danish capital on Saturday and Sunday.

Witnesses said the gunman had fired up to 40 shots at a cafe hosting a free speech event with Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has received death threats for depicting the head of the Prophet Mohammad on a dog.

The gunman then moved on to a nearby synagogue where the guard, protecting a young girl's confirmation, was gunned down.

On Sunday, thousands of Danes left a sea of flowers by the city's ornate 180-year-old synagogue.

"We are a small nation and such things don't happen here," 28-year-old student Frederikke Baastrup said, reflecting a widespread sense of shock in a country that prides itself on its reputation for safety and social tolerance.

Police cordoned off several sections of a predominantly immigrant neighborhood and took away several people for questioning, witnesses said.

Danish media widely reported the gunman to be Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein. Reuters could not confirm his identity and police declined to comment.

Op-ed: The Genderqueer Heroes at Equinox Get It

The gym scene in South Beach may not be as gay as it once was, but it's still cool.

For those who've never heard of it, Equinox is a high-end "luxury" gym that prides itself on being a cutting edge, overtly friendly, one-stop shop for those wanting to knock their bods back into shape.

Alas, it's also pretty much the only gym left in sunny, gay South Beach. There's Crunch, but less said about that the better.

It wasn't always like this. For one thing, gay South Beach used to be, well, actually gay. When I bought my first closet-size condo (to avoid some of the worst of New York's winters), there were five body-building gyms within walking distance. David Barton, Iron Works, etc. None offered yoga, or aerobics, or any of those other silly lifestyle classes.

And all were pretty much gay, as was the neighborhood. South Beach had once been a quiet Cuban enclave with lots of Hasidic Jews. Until gay men discovered it in the late '80s and helped set off round after round of gentrification that is still going on, eventually transmuting all the old Orthodox synagogues into new condos along the way.

The gay muscle queens would walk, often hand in hand, to their favorite gyms in the morning to work out, just as the Orthodox men in their fur-lined hats would walk toward their shuls to pray at sunset.

More than a few of them were impossibly beefed up totally ripped to the tits on steroids that helped counter the effects of the new HIV cocktails that were unbelievably, suddenly returning them to life.

But all that is gone. This Equinox is pretty straight as far as I can tell. Even the cute trainers with the tight butts are straight. And yet, like South Beach itself, it's still strangely laid-back and tolerant, in a way that few communities can match. Certainly not Greenwich Village or Dupont Circle, both of which I'd lived in for decades.

One of the things Equinox does to maintain its hip, upscale yuppie cred is roll out MTV-style videos at all their gyms they're supposedly edgy but more often plain perplexing with the theme "Equinox made me do it."

For instance, last week I noticed the newest offering on the big video board at the entrance. First, a masked muscle-builder gets spray painted (I said "perplexing"). Then a lovely young woman starts shaving her head. A bearded man cradles a stone baby fountain with water coming out instead of pee. And for the finale, a striking blond long-haired model struts and pouts for the camera before taking off her coat to reveal her ... bare, flat, manly chest.
