Synagogue shooting update: Danish police arrest 2 suspected accomplices

Posted By on February 16, 2015

COPENHAGEN Danish police have arrested two people on suspicion of aiding a gunman in deadly attacks on a synagogue and an event promoting free speech at the weekend that have shocked a nation proud of its record of safety and openness.

A 22-year-old gunman opened fire on a cafe in Copenhagen hosting a free speech debate on Saturday, killing one, and attacked a synagogue, killing a guard. The man was later shot dead by police in his neighborhood of Norrebro, a poor and largely immigrant part of the city with a reputation for gang violence.

The cafe event was attended by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has received death threats for drawings of the Prophet Mohammad, and by French ambassador Francois Zimeray, who likened the attacks to the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris. Vilks and Zimeray were both unharmed.

"The two men are suspected of helping the perpetrator by giving him advice and assistance in connection with the shootings at Krudttndenre and Krystalgade," police said in a statement on Monday, referring to the locations of the attacks.

A Copenhagen judge later remanded the two suspects to 10 days in detention.

The killings shocked Danes who pride themselves on a welcoming and safe society, and fed into a national debate about the role of immigrants, especially Muslims. The populist Danish People Party, which campaigned against the building of a mosque here, has strong support in the polls.

Denmark became a target of Islamists 10 years ago after the publication of cartoons lampooning the Prophet Mohammad, images that led to sometimes violent protests in the Muslim world.

The detention of possible accomplices may heighten fears that this was not just an attack by a lone wolf, but possibly backed by a more organized group of marginalized youths radicalized by time in jail or unemployment.

There was no suggestion that foreign jihadi groups played a role, however.

"We're not talking about a fighter who has been abroad in Syria or Iraq. We are talking about a man who was known to the police due to his gang activities, criminal activities inside Denmark," Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard told the BBC.

In wake of Copenhagen attacks, Netanyahu calls on Danish Jews to migrate to Israel

Posted By on February 16, 2015

Israel is calling its people home.

Thats how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to Saturdays deadly shooting at a Denmark synagogue, saying that such attacks are likely to continue and that Israel would welcome any European Jews who decide to move there, Reuters reported.

The Copenhagen shooting an echo of last months Paris attacks occurred first at a caf holding a freedom-of-speech event, then at a synagogue. Two were killed, including a Jewish security guard.

This wave of attacks and the murderous anti-Semitic assaults that are part of it is expected to go on," Mr. Netanyahu said during his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem Sunday.

Jews deserve protection in every country but we say to Jews, to our brothers and sisters, Israel is your home, he added. We are preparing and calling for the absorption of mass immigration from Europe."

The prime ministers call comes as his cabinet approved a $46 million budget to finance the growing number of European Jews immigrating into Israel in order to flee violence, political turmoil, and rising anti-Semitism, according to Israeli publication Haaretz.

Jewish immigrants from Ukraine soared from less than 2,000 in 2013 to almost 6,000 in 2014, according to Israels Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, while nearly 7,000 Jews from France alone migrated into Israel in 2014.

Israels Law of Return, passed in 1950, gives Jews worldwide the right to settle in Israel. It also comes with a range of financial benefits that include everything from free airport transportation when the immigrant arrives to income tax benefits and rental and mortgage assistance.

In return, Israel ensures itself a growing, skilled population of Jewish nationals. As Bloomberg put it: With experience in fields ranging from telecommunications to biotech to finance, those people could have an effect not unlike the Protestant Huguenots driven from France in the 16th and 17th centuries, who became an economic engine in the U.S., Canada, and several European countries.

Following the attacks on Saturday, Naftali Bennett, Israels Minister of the Economy, echoed Netanyahus call: Jews can and should have the right to live anywhere, he told Israeli news site Ynetnews, but if there are Jews who are concerned about their future, we are certainly waiting for them.

Denmark Sees Possible 'Charlie Hebdo' Motive Behind Copenhagen Attacks

Posted By on February 16, 2015

(Reuters) - Police shot dead a gunman on Sunday whose attacks on a Copenhagen synagogue and an event promoting free speech may have been inspired by an attack on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo last month, authorities said.

Denmark's spy chief Jens Madsen said the gunman was known to the intelligence services prior to the shooting and probably acted alone. He did not elaborate.

Two civilians were killed and five police were wounded in the two separate attacks in the Danish capital on Saturday.

We cannot yet say anything concrete about the motive ... but are considering that he might have been inspired by the events in Paris some weeks ago, Madsen told a news conference.

Danish authorities have been on alert since Islamist gunmen killed 17 people in three days of violence in Paris in January that began with an attack on Charlie Hebdo, long known for its acerbic cartoons on Islam, other religions and politicians.

Police who had earlier released a photo of the suspect dressed in a heavy winter coat and maroon mask, said they did not believe he had received training in Jihadist camps in the Middle East.

Witnesses to the Copenhagen attacks said the gunman fired up to 40 shots at a cafe hosting a free speech event with Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who has received death threats for depicting the head of the Prophet Mohammad on a dog.

Vilks was unhurt but a 55-year-old man was killed. A guard was later shot in the head outside Copenhagen's biggest synagogue, where around 80 people were celebrating a confirmation. Two police officers were also wounded there.

Police shot dead the suspect early on Sunday after he opened fire on them near a railway station in the Noerrebro district, not far from the sites of the two attacks. Officers later searched his home, which was nearby.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said the attacks were terrorism and promised to protect freedom of speech and Denmark's small but vibrant Jewish community.
