Police: 1 shooting victim at Copenhagen synagogue dies

Posted By on February 15, 2015

COPENHAGEN, Denmark Police in Copenhagen say they have shot and killed a man who shot at them near a train station and are investigating whether he can be linked to two shootings hours earlier at a free speech event and at a synagogue.

A statement posted early Sunday by police says the shooting occurred after they had put an address near the train station under observation. The statement says no police officers were wounded.

The two earlier shootings left two dead and five police officers wounded, stirring fears that another terror spree was underway in a European capital a month after 17 people were killed in Paris attacks.

This is a breaking news story. AP's earlier version follows...

COPENHAGEN, Denmark A shooting at a free speech event featuring an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad and a second shooting hours later outside a synagogue left two dead and five police officers wounded in Copenhagen, stirring fears that another terror spree was under way in a European capital a month after 17 people were killed in Paris attacks.

Police couldn't say whether the shootings at a cultural center Saturday afternoon and in front of the synagogue early Sunday were connected, but didn't rule it out. In both shootings, the gunman got away.

"We are looking for two perpetrators," police spokesman Allan Wadsworth-Hansen told reporters.

The first shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. Danish police said the gunman used an automatic weapon to shoot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cultural center during a panel discussion on freedom of expression following the Paris attacks. A 55-year-old man attending the event was killed, while three police officers were wounded. Two belonged to the Danish security service PET, which said the circumstances surrounding the shooting "indicate that we are talking about a terror attack."

The gunman then fled in a carjacked Volkswagen Polo that was found later a few kilometers (miles) away, police said.

Man killed in Copenhagen synagogue shooting was Jewish: Faith group

Posted By on February 15, 2015

COPENHAGEN: A man gunned down outside a Copenhagen synagogue early Sunday (Feb 15) in one of three lethal shootings in the Danish capital was Jewish, a Jewish community group said on Sunday.

Michael Gelvan, chairman of the Nordic Jewish Security Council, told AFP that a bar mitzvah, or Jewish coming of age ceremony, had been underway inside the synagogue and that the "young man" had been responsible for "access control" when he was shot.

"We don't know anything yet, it's too early to guess," he said about possible motives behind the killing. "But it's a copy of what happened in Paris," he said, referring to the deadly attacks at satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in January.

In addition to the guard there were extra police outside the synagogue after community leaders contacted authorities following the afternoon gun attack on a debate about Islam and free speech at a community centre that left one dead and three police officers wounded.

The two police officers outside the synagogue were wounded but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening. "I dare not think about what would have happened if (the killer) had access to the congregation," the chairman of The Jewish Community in Denmark, Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, told broadcaster TV2 News.

Synagogue Shooting Victim Dies; Copenhagen on Edge

Posted By on February 15, 2015

World News Videos | ABC World NewsCopy

A person who was shot in the head in an attack near a Copenhagen synagogue has died, Danish police said tonight, but there was no word on whether that incident, in which two cops were also wounded, was related to another fatal shooting earlier in the day.

The shooting tonight, in which two police officers were also wounded, occurred just hours after a gunman killed one person and wounded three cops at a free-speech event at a caf in the Danish city, police said.

Police were looking for at least one gunman in that attack at the Krudttoenden cafe, which Danish officials described as terrorism and an assassination attempt.

"We feel certain now that it is a politically motivated attack, and thereby it is a terrorist attack," Danish Prime Minister Helle Thornin-Schmidt said of the cafe shooting.

Police tweeted early Sunday local time that officers shot a man at the city's Norrebro train station, but did not say whether it was connected to the shootings at the synagogue and the cafe. They also said the condition of the person shot was unknown.

At a news conference late Saturday night, police asked residents to respect road blocks set up around the crime scenes, but said there is no curfew or lockdown in the city.

Officials also said that residents should continue about their regular routine as there is a "massive presence of police in Copenhagen."

Police initially said they were looking for two shooters in the attack at the cafe, but after interviews with witnesses they said they believed there was only one.

They released a security photo of the suspect, showing a man in a dark coat, with what appeared to be a reddish hat and scarf covering much of his face.

Police in shootout with suspect in deadly attacks

Posted By on February 15, 2015

Story highlights Copenhagen police kill a gunman during a shootout Sunday He's suspected in Saturday's deadly attacks at a free speech forum and a synagogue

"As a nation, we have experienced a series of hours we will never forget," Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said Sunday.

"We have tasted the ugly taste of fear and powerlessness that terror would like to create. But we have also, as a society, answered back."

The carnage began Saturday afternoon, when a gunman stormed a Copenhagen cafe where Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks -- known for his controversial depictions of the Prophet Mohammed -- was attending a free speech forum.

The gunman killed a 55-year-old man at the cafe and wounded three officers before fleeing, police said. The victim has not been identified.

About 10 hours later, someone approached two officers near a Copenhagen synagogue and started shooting, police said.

Just behind the synagogue, a young girl was celebrating her confirmation with a party of about 80 people, the Jewish Society of Denmark said.

The two officers were wounded and survived. But 37-year-old Dan Uzan, who was standing at the gate providing security for the party, was shot and killed, the Jewish Society said.

"The Jewish Society is in shock about the attack, but everyone's thoughts are first and foremost with Dan's family and friends, and with the wounded police officers and their families," the Jewish Society said.

Authorities pieced together surveillance images from across the capital and tracked the suspect's movements, Copenhagen police investigator Jorgen Skov said.
