Paris synagogue closes; police continue search for female suspect

Posted By on January 10, 2015

(CNN) The Grande Synagogue of Paris has closed over concerns about security after this week's terror attacks.

The siege at the office of a satirical magazine left 12 dead Wednesday.

Police tracked down two brothers who orchestrated and carried out those slayings - killing them in a shootout Friday.

Another suspect who held hostages at a market was also killed by police.

French authorities searched Saturday for the remaining known suspect in this week's terror attacks as the country grappled with heartbreak following another day of blood and horror.

Police killed three suspects during raids Friday -- one wanted in the fatal shooting of a policewoman and four hostages, the other two in the massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine.

The attack at the Paris office of the satirical magazine left 12 dead on Wednesday.

"The nation is relieved tonight," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Friday.

But the French government's work is not over.

There's still a lot of healing to do, a lot of questions to answer on preventing future attacks. And a woman wanted over the policewoman's shooting Thursday, named as Hayat Boumeddiene, is still at large.

Synagogue: South Africa plans to repatriate other bodies

Posted By on January 10, 2015

Williams, who spoke in Johannesburg on Saturday, observed that the government acknowledged that families of the victims needed to begin the healing process.

No fewer than 85 South Africans reportedly died in the building collapse.

She added, This can only happen once their loved ones are brought back home for proper burial.

However, 74 bodies of the South Africans had been repatriated while the remaining 11 bodies are still being verified via DNA test.

She said the social workers and the South African forensic unit had visited the families of the remaining bodies.

According to her, fresh samples collected from the family representatives have been submitted to the laboratory for processing.

Williams stated, The South African government has been collaborating with the Nigerian authorities to finalise identifying the bodies.

We will communicate with the families as soon as the Nigerian laboratory finalises the process.

Manhattan Beach resident Sidney Sheres has developed a software program to improve English language skills. Photo by Caroline Anderson

While growing up in the Bronx as a young Jewish boy, Sidney Sheres mother taught him Ladino, a language spoken in few parts of the world today.

The mixture of Spanish, Hebrew and other languages was spoken by Sephardic Jews in medieval Spain. During the Spanish Inquisition, its speakers fled the country, taking their language with them.

Maybe thats why Im so interested in language, the Manhattan Beach resident said on a recent afternoon. It came from my history.

Spheres, a former information technology analyst for Boeing, is developing a new software program he calls Conversation Space to help both native and new English speakers improve their language skills.

We have a large group of people coming to America who all have one thing in common: They need to speak English, he said. Otherwise, they may be relegated to a lower income bracket.

He gave the example of a doctor from another country who moves to the U.S. but cant practice because she cant communicate effectively.

He also thinks his software could help native English speakers who want to improve their public speaking skills.

Conversation Space is really about bringing back the art of conversation, he said.

Sheres began developing the software about two years ago after being laid off from Boeing, where he had worked for 10 years on classified space programs.
