Rabbi turned comedian to perform at Temple Sinai

Posted By on December 23, 2014

Rabbi and comedian Bob Alper will share his skills as a funny story teller on Dec. 25 in a 90-minute stand up comedy show at Temple Sinai of Hollywood.

"Having Bob (Alper) perform on Christmas Day is no accident. I have known Bob for years and wanted to book him on Dec. 25. With the shopping malls and many restaurants closed, what else can Jews do on Christmas Day but see our show?," laughed Harry Silverman, executive director of Temple Sinai.

"I am so happy that Bob Alper is willing to share his comedy with us. Our audience will be captivated by his wit, charm and comedy," he added.

"I love performing on Christmas. I tell many Christmas and Hanukkah jokes, such as one of the joys of watching television on Hanukkah is watching newsman Brian Williams mispronouncing Hanukkah as 'Chhhhahh-- na-koo-nah' all the time. and his "ch" sounds make him sound like he is choking," joked Alper.

Alper has been performing as a stand up comedian full time since 1985, but speaks on topics that most comedians won't do stories from the pulpit. Alper also will not go down the raunchy path as some comedians do with foul mouthed jokes.

"I am a rabbi and still respected as one by my audiences. So I don't want to tarnish my role by talking about the lowest common denominator topics like the young comedians do. I am proud that I do clean, funny material that all ages can enjoy."

Along with funny sermons, Alper's repertoire of topics include weddings and funerals he officiated, religious education and funny observations about the behavior of his congregants during services.

"I always had a knack as a rabbi of finding humor to begin a sermon and it is very much at the heart of Judaism. Even in study, I always had the attention of my students in Talmud studies by beginning the lessons with a few jokes."

After graduating from Hebrew Union College and ordained as a reform rabbi in 1978, Alper had pulpits in fourteen congregations throughout the country and earned his doctorate at Princeton Theological Seminary.

"Even as I performed the rabbi's duties, I took a chance and performed comedy part time outside of the temple. The audience reaction was positive and so I became more confident. Eventually, I gave up my pulpit to do stand up comedy full time and have no regrets," said the 70-year-old comedian, who hopes to never retire from performing.

Innovative California Rabbi Harold Schulweis dies – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

Posted By on December 23, 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Rabbi Harold Schulweis, an influential Conservative synagogue leader and scholar who fostered bold change, has died in Los Angeles at age 89.

His death late Wednesday was announced by Rabbi Edward Feinstein, senior rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom, where Schulweis was the spiritual leader for decades.

Innovations credited to Schulweis include gathering small groups of families to share religious and family life, a new model for lay-professional synagogue leadership. In 1992, Schulweis welcomed gay and lesbian Jews into the synagogue.

"He was a rare combination of brilliant theological intellect, programmatic innovator and truly buoyant spirit," Rabbi David Wolpe, of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, said in an email to The Associated Press.

Schulweis' sermons were "full of deep ideas and Jewish learning but he could provide simple, wise advice," Wolpe said.

"As a leader in the community for over 45 years, he was an innovator that transformed the synagogue beyond a place of worship into a true community that fostered activism, counseling and charity," said U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Los Angeles, who was a member of Schulweis' congregation since the mid-1990s.

The author of nine books, Schulweis also founded or co-founded organizations that recognized Christians who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, addressed poverty in the U.S. and worked to raise awareness of genocide in Africa.

Schulweis perennially appeared on Newsweek's list of the 50 most influential rabbis in America. He also served as an adviser on Judaism for "The Simpsons," including the episode where it was revealed that Krusty the Clown's father was a rabbi, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A synagogue statement said Schulweis died at home after a long struggle with heart disease.

Born and raised in New York, Schulweis graduated from Yeshiva University in 1945 and received his ordination as a rabbi five years later. After earning a doctorate in theology, he served at synagogues in Parkchester, New York, and Oakland, California, before coming to Valley Beth Shalom.

Synagogue: Weapon investigator says collapsed building attacked

Posted By on December 23, 2014

TB Joshua

A 37-year-old weapon researcher and graduate of Chemistry from the University of Maiduguri, Mr. Biedomo Iguniewei, has said that the collapsed six-storey building within the premises of the Synagogue Church for All Nations could have been felled with a high energy infrasonic radiation.

Iguniewei on Monday told the coroner probing the circumstances surrounding the September 12 tragedy that he was in a position to reach such a conclusion based on his work experience with the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria, where he said he had worked for six years.

He said the aircraft that reportedly hovered above the church shortly before the building came down could have fired infrasonic radiation weapons at the building.

The witness described himself as an independent consultant with specific interest in explosives and weapon research and that he is currently a post-graduate student of Explosives and Material Science at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

No fewer than 116 persons, mostly South Africans on pilgrimage to SCOAN, reportedly died in the incident.

The witness said that due to his background and research experience in explosives and military weapons, he took personal interest in the collapsed building and had consequently visited the site of the collapsed structure all the way from Kaduna with a view to carrying out a research and publishing a paper.

I was worried when I heard them talking of controlled demolition. And from the video that I watched, I started asking myself: What could have led to the building crumbling in near vertical fall? Iguniewei said.

Iguniewei said that after eliminating all the other possible options, he came to the conclusion that the building could possibly have been fired upon with infrasonic radiations.

According to Iguniewei, an infrasound is a type of sound measuring below 20Hz, which is below what the normal human ear could detect.

N.Y. Hasidic Lawmaker Aron Wieder Gets 'ISIS' Threat Letter

Feds Probe Photo to Rockland County Democrat By JTA

Published December 22, 2014.

Federal authorities are investigating a threatening photo sent to a Hasidic lawmaker in suburban New York.

Aron Wieder, a Democrat who is majority leader of the Rockland County Legislature, received a photo last week in the mail showing his head pasted on the body of a person beheaded by the Islamic State jihadist group. The photo was labeled with Wieders name, Arabic writing and an ISIS flag in the background, The Associated Press reported.

The envelope had a return address in Monsey, N.Y., which is in Rockland County.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force, which works with the FBI, is investigating.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco confirmed Friday to the Journal News that the threat is under federal investigation.

Were taking this very seriously as a threat and will be working with our partners in law enforcement and the FBI to try to track down who sent this, he said.

Wieder said the photo was meant to intimidate and shock.

If its someone who is sympathetic toward ISIS or someone who is hateful toward the Orthodox community is no matter, he said. Its equally disgusting.
