Japan's Beloved Christmas Cake Isn't About Christmas At All

A woman prepares a Japanese Christmas cake at the Patisserie Akira Cake shop on Dec. 23, 2011. The sponge cake is drenched in symbolic meaning.

Only about 1 percent of the Japanese population is Christian. But you might not realize that if you visited a major metropolitan area during Christmastime. Just as in America, you'll find heads topped with red Santa hats everywhere and elaborate seasonal displays: train sets, mountain scenes and snow-covered trees. Often, these are set inside bakeries hawking one of the highlights of the holiday season in Japan: Christmas cake.

"It's basically sold on practically every street corner," says anthropologist Michael Ashkenazi from the Bonn International Center for Conversion, who studied Japanese culture and tradition.

The dessert is a type of sponge cake, covered with snow-white whipped cream and topped with perfectly shaped, ruby red strawberries. It's a beloved December-time treat on the island nation and not just because it's delicious. In fact, Christmas cake is now a symbol of commercialism and prosperity, its story intertwined with Japan's rise from ruins after its defeat in World War II.

To understand why, we need to take a little historical detour.

After World War II, American soldiers led the work of rebuilding an occupied Japan. The Japanese economy was in shambles and food shortages were common. Even rarer were sugary sweets. The sweet treats from the U.S. that the Americans handed out were a memorable luxury to a people still recovering from the ravages of war.

"Sweet chocolates, above all, given by American soldiers epitomized the utmost wealth Japanese children saw in American lives," cultural anthropologist Hideyo Konagaya wrote in a 2001 paper on the history of the Christmas cake published in the Journal of Popular Culture. Sweets fed a longing for wealth and a desire to Americanize, he says.

Veep Lauds Jewish Push for Religious Freedom in America

Published December 16, 2014.

Jewish notions of religious freedom so informed the American ethos that it is is fair to say that Jewish heritage is American heritage, Vice President Joe Biden said at a menorah lighting in front of the White House.

Biden, attending the event Tuesday organized by American Friends of Lubavitch, cited the work of Emma Lazarus, the Jewish poet whose words are inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, and George Washingtons letter to the Newport, R.I., Jewish community, which quoted from the Book of Micah in promising Jews religious freedoms.

The central Jewish notion of religious freedom, of safety in your land, of being treated with dignity in your own community, not only led to the creation of modern Israel but it also formed the bedrock of the United States of America, Biden said. Jewish values are such an essential part of who we are that it is fair to say that Jewish heritage is American heritage.

Biden noted at the event that he was missing candle lighting at the home of his daughter, Ashley, who is married to a Jewish physician, Howard Krein.

President Obama, in a separate Hanukkah message, said the holidays meaning was one of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds.

The miracle at the heart of Hanukkah the oil that lasted for eight nights instead of only one reminds us that even when the future is uncertain, our best days are yet to come, he said in a statement.

The lighting of the so-called National Menorah on the ellipse in front of the White House was launched in 1979.

Women want to be chosen

What women would giveto be lusted after today.

Women are not looking just for love in a marriage. They are primarily looking for lust. A woman wants to be wanted, needs to be needed, desires to be desired. A woman does not go into marriage principally to be loved. She goes into marriage to be lusted after, to feel that theres a man who has a magnetic attraction for her. Its an easy point to prove.

If a woman wanted primarily to be loved why would she ever leave the comfort of the parental home? No ones ever going to love her more than her parents. Her parents are never going to divorce her. Her parents arent going to cheat on her. Her parents are going to love her unconditionally. She doesnt have to dress up for them; she doesnt have to impress them. If you want to be loved, you stay at home.

So why is it that by the time shes a teenager her parents have to threaten her to be at home? Whey does she trade in theunconditionallove of her parents for the veryconditionallove of a man?

When her parents tell her shes the prettiest girl in her class she just rolls her eyes. Theyre just saying that because theyre her parents. They have a genetic AK-47 to their heads making them love her. There is no choice in the matter and therefore her parents love for her cant make her feel special.

But when a man says that to a woman it must mean that shes special, shes unique. Her parents can give her love but they cant give her what shereallywants, which is to be chosen.

Every woman wants to be chosen. Our parents can give us the gift of love but not the gift of chosenness.

In the Hebrew language there is a specific word for husband(baal), but no specific word for wife. The word used to identify wife (ishah) is the exact same as the word woman. A wife is in essence a woman. A woman is always a woman, no matter who she is and what role she plays in life. She can never be fully possessed, even in marriage, which, ironically, is a good thing. It means that no husband can ever take his wife for granted. Even after you marry her she never fully becomes your wife. She remains a woman who can only be won over not by the commitment of the marital institution but through the daily solicitation of emotional devotion and affection. Women are drawn to men who desire them.

The point is best illustrated by the story of Bruriah, wife of the Hebrew sage Rabbi Meir. A daughter of the respected martyred sage Rabbi Hananiah ben Teradion, Bruriah is one of the few women singled out in the Talmud as being herself a sage. She was an intellectual and a paragon of faith who proved her mettle in soothing her husbands grief with complete acceptance of the will of the Almighty when their two sons suddenly died in tragic circumstances.
