Synagogue: Court hears Joshuas suit against coroner December 22

Posted By on December 13, 2014

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has slated December 22, 2014 to hear the application for a judicial review of the coroners inquest into the September 12 Synagogue building collapse.

Justice Lateefat Okunnu, on Friday, announced the adjournment to allow the parties to regularise the positions.

The applicants are the Founder of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations, Prophet T.B. Joshua, and the Registered Trustees of the church.

They had asked Justice Okunnu to determine whether the witness summons served on Joshua to appear before the coroner to give testimony was not a violation of his right.

They further contested that the coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komafe, had been extending his inquisitions into areas beyond his statutory power.

About 116 persons reportedly died in the collapsed six-storey guest house belonging to the SCOAN.

Komolafe had, on Wednesday, dismissed an application seeking a temporary suspension of the coroners inquest.

Meanwhile, at the resumed sitting of the coroner on Friday, a witness of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, Engr. Theophilus, continued with his testimony.

Theophilus told the coroner that the results of the tests conducted by the SON on the debris collected from the site of the collapsed building could not be entirely relied upon in determining the cause of the building collapse.

Theophilus, a civil engineer, made the submission while being cross-examined by the counsel for SCOAN, Mr. Olalekan Ojo.

Argentina Immigrants Also Fuel Rising Numbers

Tourists walk through the old Jewish quarter in the Spanish city of Toledo.

Madrid (JTA) While setting up a synagogue at the American naval base where she volunteers, Ahuvah (Amanda) Gipson made something of a bitter-sweet discovery.

Rifling through a storage area at the sprawling American-Spanish military complex Naval Station Rota in 2012, Gipson, a former naval outreach professional who now teaches off base, found three dusty Torah scrolls and a dismantled 4-foot Hanukkah menorah.

The objects were all that remained from a community that American Jews serving at Rota established many years ago, but which fell apart after they shipped out.

Setting up a durable congregation on a military base is difficult because of frequent turnover, but nearly three years later, Gipsons 15-member Bet Januka community a name referencing the found menorah is still going strong, largely because many congregants now are local Jews.

Were small, but were here to stay, Gipson said. Its kind of like the bigger story, but on slightly smaller scale.

The bigger story is the rapid growth of Jewish life in Spain, once home to one of the worlds largest and most accomplished Jewish communities but which has had only a modest Jewish presence since the expulsion in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Francophone Comic Brings Israeli Yucks Back to Homeland

Published December 12, 2014.

(JTA) A decade ago, when Israels community of French-speakers was only beginning its huge growth, my mother dismissively remarked that the newcomers biggest contribution to this country will be all the lovely concerts.

A French speaker who grew up listening to chanson giants on Israeli radio, she was referring to how the accumulation of Francophone audiences in Israel meant more frequent performances by singers like Charles Aznavour, Enrico Macias, Jean-Jaques Goldman and Patrick Bruel.

But like many passionate Zionists, she judged French prospective olim to be too materialistic to ever amount to a flood. When it came to the French, she maintained, Israel could never realty compete with the conveniences of Frances welfare system.

My mother passed away several years ago but I still wanted to call her up last month from Paris, where I chanced upon a flyer that suggested to me that she had gotten it all wrong.

The flyer was for the Paris premiere of a one-woman show about aliyah by the French-born comedian Judith Mergui, who has made an international name for herself from Israel, where she moved seven years ago.

To me, it demonstrated the creeping shift in French Jewrys cultural center of gravity, from France to Israel. You see, maman, I wanted to tell her, now French-speaking Jews in Paris are flocking to see performances by French-speaking Jews from Israel.

Titled Inchalyah, the show is a comedy drawing on experiences from Merguis own immigration to Israel. The name is a mashup of the Arabic Inshallah, meaning God willing, and the Hebrew word for Jewish immigration to Israel, which literally means ascent.

California Chabad group must pay nearly $850,000 for misusing grant

Posted By on December 13, 2014

A federal judge has ruled that the California branch of the Hasidic Jewish group Chabad-Lubavitch must pay nearly $850,000 in damages for misappropriating federal money they'd been granted to pay for security cameras.

The case was filed in 2010 by husband and wife whistleblowers who will receive a portion of the damages. Judge Morrison England ruled that Chabad misappropriated $272,495, but he awarded treble damages and penalties to bring the amount it must pay to $844,985.

"What the court is saying here is what the whistleblowers have always maintained: that the facts and law are not in dispute, and that Chabad knowingly defrauded the United States," said Michael Hirst, attorney for whistleblowers Aria and Donna Kozak.

Chabad, based in New York, is probably the best-known Hasidic movement in the world. The group is known for its celebrity telethons, rigorous observance of Jewish law and the wide-brimmed hats, long beards and long black coats that men wear. The organization runs community centers, synagogues and camps.

The case revolved around funds Chabad received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to install surveillance equipment in facilities in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

Chabad applied for the money in 2008 from the Department of Homeland Security, as part of a program that provides security upgrades for nonprofits. The program was administered by the California Emergency Management Agency. Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin signed agreements to comply with government financial rules "that would safeguard the integrity of any grant payments made."

"Rabbi Cunin treated the grant advances as if they were gifts to Chabad that, once paid by Cal EMA, were no longer the 'business of the government,'" England wrote. "Chabad proceeded to use grant funds to pay unauthorized expenses...."

The judge said that Chabad did not have policies to ensure that the grant funds were not mixed with other money. Instead, the grant was placed in the general fund and used to cover payroll, utility bills and other expenses.

"Cunin made it clear that the absence of such policies was not an oversight and conceded that he never planned to safeguard the grant advances and ensure that funds so received were used only to pay authorized grant costs," the judge wrote.

The Kozaks filed their suit in 2010, and the federal government joined it two years later. The Kozaks will receive an undetermined amount of the award.
