Hallelujah! Synagogue is landmarked

Posted By on November 6, 2014

After nearly 50 years in landmarking limbo, Tifereth Israel Town & Village Synagogue, at 334 E. 14th St., was designated an individual landmark on Oct. 28 by the citys Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The historic house of worship was built in 1866 as the First German Baptist Church. In 1926, it became the Ukrainian Autocephalic Church of St. Volodymyr. In 1962, it became the Town & Village Synagogue.

Shortly after New Yorks landmarks law was adopted in 1965, the building was formally considered for designation, yet never received a vote. However, for the next five decades, it remained officially calendared by L.P.C.

Last year, the building was advertised for sale, prompting the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and other preservation and East Village groups to lobby L.P.C. to vote on landmarking it.

When Meenakshi Srinivasan was appointed the new Landmarks chairperson in July,G.V.S.H.P. urged her finally to move ahead with a vote on designating the building.

This venerable piece of our neighborhoods history will finally receive the protection it deserves, said Andrew Berman, G.V.S.H.P. executive director.

L.A. Sephardic Film Festival fetes beloved Israeli entertainer

Attendees at the 2014 Los Angeles Sephardic Jewish Film Festival (LASJFF) will have to wait for the second night if they want Sephardic content. Unless, that is, the festivals opening-night celebrity honoree decides to sing a Ladino song during his acceptance speech.

When you are operating a small film festival that plays every other year to a niche audience, you have a bit more flexibility over what you can and cannot do. For its opening-night gala, the LASJFF will present Operation Sunflower, a film that is neither made by a person of Sephardic descent, nor is in any way Sephardic in its subject matter. This slightly off-mission premiere represents a first for the festival, which began in 1997.

However, Operation Sunflower features beloved Israeli actor and entertainer Yehoram Gaon, who is both a proud Sephardi and the recipient of this years Cinema Sepharad Lifetime Achievement Award. Gaon will be in attendance to accept the award at the Nov. 9 screening at Paramount Pictures.

We could have picked a whole host of other films that Yehoram Gaon has been in, said Rabbi Daniel Bouskila, director of the Sephardic Educational Center (SEC), which produces the festival. Kazablan would have been fun, but its 40 years old, and everybody has seen it. For a premiere opening night at Paramount, we didnt want to screen a film that you can get on Netflix.

Presented from the perspective of pioneering scientists, Operation Sunflower is inspired by true events, chronicling Israels decision to pursue nuclear weaponry in the face of threats from Iran. Gaon portrays the head of the Mossad.

Given the honorees background and his contributions to Israels entertainment industry, the film is almost beside the point. The Jerusalem-born Gaon has starred in, written and directed multiple films; he wrote In the Middle of the Road and edited Spices From Spain, a collection of Ladino quotes. With more than 20 albums running the gamut from Israeli songs to Ladino ballads, Gaon basically put Ladino music on the map in the latter part of the 20th century, Bouskila said.

Some of our past honorees have received the Cinema Sepharad Award, because they were Sephardic, but not necessarily because they had done anything to promote the Sephardic heritage, Bouskila continued. This year we decided, Lets really try to find an honoree that promotes in his or her professional work what our mission really is. Yehoram Gaon was the classic choice.

Interviewed by phone in Israel, Gaon said he is pleased by the recognition and hopeful that the LASJFF award like his many other accolades will help open up opportunities to showcase other deserving artists of Sephardic descent.

I do believe that awards like this can encourage Ladino singers and actors to do more, said Gaon, who will sandwich in a quick-hit visit to Los Angeles and return home two days later to assorted TV and radio commitments. So I am very happy.

Matisyahu brings his blend of music to Phillips Center

Posted By on November 6, 2014

Aside from ZZ Top, probably no other music artist could cause more of a commotion by shaving a beard than Matisyahu.

While ZZ Tops Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill have not taken a razor to their signature facial hair, Matisyahu went clean shaven and trimmed his hair in December 2011. It radically altered his appearance, but registered on a much deeper level because of what the whisker whacking represented to an entire population.

As musics leading Hasidic Jewish artist, Matisyahu had inspired a legion of people who also followed his religion in ways that went beyond his music. Matisyahu set an example for how to follow the Orthodox Jewish religion, yet also assimilate into society as a whole and enjoy such secular pursuits as going to concerts and clubs or partying.

Although he tried to explain that he had not rejected his Jewish faith and had only decided he could not live by certain specific rules that are part of the religion, the change in Matisyahus appearance, as well as the absence of a Yarmulke as part of Matisyahus clothing, caused plenty of consternation and questions.

Three years and two albums (2012s Spark Seeker and the new release Akeda) later, Maitsyahu (Matt Miller is his secular name) says he has yet to get a good read on how going clean-shaven has impacted his image.

There are some people who get it and there are some people that dont, and thats what it is, said Matisyahu, who performs Nov. 10 at the Phillips Center.

And I try not to spend too much time really thinking, or worrying or even reading comments about it. Im busy kind of living my life. There was a time when I was really affected by all of the stuff I was reading online and I just stopped reading that stuff.

Up until he revealed his new look, Matisyahu hadnt had to deal with much in the way of criticism. Now 35, he started to get on the music scene radar with his independently released 2004 debut album, Shake Off the Dust ... Arise. That was followed in 2006 by the concert CD, Live At Stubbs, which was picked up for release by Epic Records and gained the attention of the mainstream media.

He was praised for his sound, a blend of reggae, hip-hop and rock, and for the spiritual, uplifting messages in his lyrics. He ended 2006 riding a wave of popularity, as his second studio album, Youth, had debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard album chart, and a single from the album, King Without a Crown, had gone top 10 on Billboards Modern Rock chart.
