SKOKIE Author Maggie Antons long and winding road led her to a place she could never have predicted: the Talmud.
There is little in her background her upbringing in a secular socialist household and her 30 years working as a clinical chemist that would make her career destination predictable. And as her expertise in the Talmud grew, another aspect about her writing was different: Anton did not take her research to the arena of non-fiction, but used it as fuel to launch enthralling historical fiction.
I realized that nobody seemed to know about this time period, said Anton from Los Angeles where she lives and was raised. I wanted to share it somehow. I had always been a voracious reader of fiction. Im not a non-fiction person. I devour fiction. I decided Im going to write the book that I want to read about Rashis daughters.
She wrote three books, in fact a trilogy about the lives and loves of three daughters of the great Talmud scholar in 11th Century France. These books and subsequent ones not only drew great attention and critical praise, but they were accompanied by author appearances throughout the area.
These were not, however, your typical book tours.
Im not like some authors who just read from their books for 20 minutes, Anton said. I talk about my research. I talk about what I learned and all the cool, amazing stuff.
There is a lot of cool, amazing stuff for her to share when she comes to this area next week. Beginning Oct. 19 when Anton speaks in Skokie and ending Oct. 26 when she is in Chicago, the author will offer up some delicious behind-the-scenes spells from her newest book, Enchantress, which takes place in Fourth Century Babylonia.
She paints a world of magic and spells as played out in an engrossing love story.
Ill share some of the spells, she said about her upcoming appearances. People are very interested in the magic especially the spells that were turned into prayers that you say everyday now. Some of the spells from the Talmud have worked their way into the prayer book. Theres kind of a fuzzy border between a spell and a blessing.

The coroner investigating the cause of the September 12 Synagogue building collapse has demanded for the list of the people lodging in the building prior to the accident.
This demand was made on Thursday during a visit to the site of the collapsed building by the coroner, Magistrate O. A. Komolafe.
Komolafe who made the demand said the list would be an important complement to the work of the pathologists in identifying the corpses.
We want to be able to identify all the victims because those bodies will not be released to their relatives if we cannot identify them.
They will be given mass burial which is not appropriate, Komolafe said.
The coroner reiterated that the mission of his court was not to convict anyone but to narrow down to the factor responsible for the collapse of the six-storey building.
Like I said at the inaugural sitting, we are not here on a witch-hunt or to convict anybody. We are here for a fact-finding purpose and how we can ascertain the cause of the incident, he added.
In his own submission, the Lagos State Chief Forensic Pathologist, Prof. John Obafunwa, who accompanied the coroner on the visit, buttressed the coroner, adding that there was no harm in making the list available to the court.
Obafunwa equally delivered a formal letter addressed to the church requesting for the manifest.

The proposed construction of a new Greenwich Reform Synagogue in Cos Cob will be one of the topics of a neighborhood meeting tonight, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
Neighbors have opposed the construction of the synagogue in the middle of an otherwise residential neighborhood in Cos Cob and the meeting will provide an update on the situation, as well as look at issues with the town zoning process over the last two years. The meeting will be held in the Cos Cob Firehouses meeting room and people can enter through the side door on Sinawoy Road.
The town recently settled a lawsuit brought forward by the Greenwich Reform Synagogue claiming the Zoning Board of Appeals had discriminated against them by not voting to grant a key land use approval. As part of that settlement the size of the proposed synagogue was reduced slightly and the board granted that approval.
However, neighbor lawsuits against the town over earlier approvals are still ongoing and the meeting is expected to contain an update over how those are proceeding as well as discussing what potential next steps could be taken by the community. There will be time for questions from attendees.
