How a Synagogue of Kids Raise Their High Holiday Funds

Posted By on September 29, 2014

How a Synagogue of Kids Raise Their High Holiday Funds for Yom Kippur the holiest day in the Jewish calender.

These honors are honors such as being called to the Torah, also known as an Aliya, or the opening of the Ark or the honor of holding the holy Torah scroll for the poignant Kol Nidre prayer on Yom Kippur Eve. Yet there is one honor that is the most sought after out of all High Holiday honors and this is the honor to be called up to read the story of the Prophet Jonah.

Rabbi Mendel Duchman of Los Angeles explains that the honor of being called up to read the story of Jonah is more than just superstition; it is an age old tradition that comes with many great blessings, blessings of health, wealth and prosperity. Last year alone, the main synagogue in Moscow was said to have sold the honor for $660,000, the equivalent of 20 million rubles. While in Israel, a New York man was said to have forked out $28,000 for the honor.

The story of the Prophet Jonah is one of hope and forgiveness and it is something that is at the epicenter of the entire Yom Kippur day. The people of Ninveh are forgiven for their sins. This year may even be more poignant as it was long believed that the Iraqi city of Mosul was the ancient city of Ninveh. It was also believed that this is where the Prophet Jonah was buried, the site believed as his burial spot was destroyed by ISIL as they marauded to conquer Mosul.

Like many others, Duchman is a firm believer that the merits and blessings that come with the honor of reading the story of the Prophet Jonah are evident for those that purchase the honor. Yet, Duchman is no ordinary Rabbi and nor is the way he sells the distinct honor of reading the Maftir Yonah, as it is known. Duchman runs a real synagogue for children. The children hold the official positions, from president of the synagogue to chairman of the synagogue; these positions are all held by children who bid for the positions in hotly contested elections.

Raising money in a synagogue run and managed by kids can be tricky, so Duchman came up with the reading of the story of Jonah co-op. While one child will read the story, people from all around the globe can chip in to the efforts and indeed reap the benefits and blessings of this unique Maftir Yonah.

It is something that he has been doing for close to 13 years now and it is something that has dual benefit. The synagogue for the kids receives the impetus of much needed funds and many people who would not have afforded the merits of purchasing the honor of reading the story of Jonah, receive all the merits and blessings that come along with it.

Rosh Hashanah-Eve Attack Causes No Damage

wikipedia

Published September 29, 2014.

Kievs oldest synagogue was the target of a firebomb that burst into flames outside the building.

The firebombing at the Great Choral Synagogue on Sept. 24, the eve of Rosh Hashanah, did not cause damage, according to the news website evreiskiy.kiev.ua, which belongs to the Jewish Kiev watchdog on anti-Semitism.

Police suspect that an arsonist targeting the actual building hurled the firebomb a glass bottle filled with a flammable substance.

The operator of a restaurant that operates nearby reported a fire at the synagogue to police, according to the report.

The synagogue, which is also known as the Podil Synagogue, was reconstructed in 1915.

In a separate incident, a swastika was painted on the Holocaust memorial monument at Babi Yar in Kiev, where Nazi troops murdered more than 33,000 in September 1941. The Nazi symbol was discovered on the monument on Sept. 23, the news channel 112 Ukraine reported.

Well not rush Synagogue building collapse probe -Fashola

Fashola made the statement while receiving members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners in Ikeja.

He said the government would not yield to pressure from some Nigerians, who wanted immediate action on the incident but would act methodically on the issue.

Fashola said most of the pronouncements made on the incident did not reflect what actually happened and called on people to stop making comments that could bring more confusion into the situation.

The governor said, On this issue, we are going to act methodically. We are going to act in a civilised manner. This is what we discussed at the State Executive Council today.

We are not going to, without evidence, say this person has done wrong. Investigations are always painstaking and are done through scientific processes.

This is the way that every civilised society develops. And we must assume that all the necessary provisions of law will be complied with. That is our track record here and nothing less will happen in this case.

Fashola described NITP as the states partner in progress and said his administration would continue to work with the association in ending the menace of building collapse in the state.

NITP National President, Chief Steve Onu, commended Fashola for his many interventionist strides in the state.

He said the association would continue to partner with the state in the area of infrastructural planning and environmental development.

On the Synagogue building collapse, Onu urged the state government to ensure that a thorough investigation was carried out to unearth the culprits of the disaster.

Matisyahu Brings Always Positive Message to Headliners Tonight

Posted By on September 29, 2014

From a time when the first Hasidic Jew rapper/reggae master came into the music scene in traditional Hasidic garb, long beard, broad brimmed hat over a yarmulke singing of general positivity and occasionally praising his Jewish faith, some things have changed a bit. He's changed up his attire, shaved his beard at a time when beards are fashionably rocked by all you masculine chaps, but his music remains a shining light in a time when the world seems to be heading into darkness.

Now the last thing I want to do here is make this into a political piece, but for me Matisyahu's music has always brimmed with peace, love and fun jams that are often awe inspiring. The first time I heard 'One Day', I really thought it was the coolest song that always could inspire a smile and shed light on any level of darkness anyone had going in their lives. I shared it with multiple friends who always thought the same. A favorite version is as follows so no matter what your political thoughts are I hope it brings you a smile on this lovely Monday morning.

His latest release 'Akeda' stays true to form and really excited to see what he brings to the show tonight. One thing you can be sure of is a perma-grinduring, and after, the show as it's going to be pure fun gang.

Tickets are still available and Radical Something and Cisco Adler are super fun stuff as well and I highly recommend coming out and shaking your case of the Mondays! As the thousands of you know, I have yet to lead you to a bad show, so hope to see some fun faces tonight as the perfect way to start your week on a positive note.
