Ted Cruz Apologizes For Saying His Critics Don't Care About Persecuted Christians Unless it Involves an 'Anti-Israel …

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) delivers remarks at the Faith & Freedom Coalition "Road to Majority" policy conference in Washington, June 19, 2014.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, issued an apology for saying in a recent interview that critics of his pro-Israel comments at an ecumenical In Defense of Christians summit earlier this month only "care" about persecuted Christians when it comes with an "anti-Israel narrative."

"It was a mistake to suggest that critics of my remarks at IDC had not spoken out previously concerning the persecution of Christians; many of them have done so, often quite eloquently," Cruz said Thursday. "It was not my intent to impugn anyone's integrity, and I apologize to any columnists who took offense."

In an interview with World Magazinelast weekend, the outspoken Tea Party Republican explained his side of the Sept. 10 mishapthat forced him to end his keynote speech early at the In Defense of Christian's Inaugural Summit in Washington, D.C. The IDC was created to promote awareness of persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Christian groups from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine were in attendance. Cruz's statement that Christians have no greater ally than Israel was met with boos from a small portion of the approximately 1,000 in attendance.

In the interview, Cruz criticized some columnists' remarks that stated when he took a stand with Israel in his speech at the summit's gala dinner it caused a distraction from the real issue of plight and persecution of Middle Eastern Christians.

"What I find interesting is almost to a person, the people writing those columns have never or virtually never spoken of persecuted Christians in any other context," Cruz said. "I will say it does seem interesting that the only time at least some of these writers seem to care about persecuted Christians is when it furthers an anti-Israel narrative for them. That starts to suggest that maybe their motivation is not exactly what they're saying."

A New York Times columnby conservative Ross Douthat criticized Cruz for making those comments. He wrote that Israel is a "well-defended nation" and the more pressing issue and the purpose of the summit was to highlight the potential extinction of Middle Eastern Christians, even though some of those Christians have differing views on the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

"[Israel's] supporters, and especially its American Christian supporters, can afford to allow a population that's none of the above to organize to save itself from outright extinction without also demanding applause for Israeli policy as the price of sympathy and support," Douthat wrote.

Other Cruz critics say that if his purpose for speaking at the event was to defend Israel then he should not have gone at all, or at least should have refrained from making those comments. Others have cricized his comments as a political opportunity to bring attention to himself.

Synagogue tragedy: SAfricans to sue TB Joshua

Posted By on September 25, 2014

Two South Africans who lost relatives when a church hostel in Lagos State collapsed have told the BBC they intend to sue Nigerian evangelist TB Joshua.

The two men, who both lost sisters in the collapse, are appealing for more families to come together in bringing a case against the preacher.

At least 115 people, including 84 South Africans, died when the multi-storey building fell down earlier this month.

The authorities say it had more floors than its foundation could hold.

On Sunday, Joshua, who is one of Nigerias best-known evangelists and is popular across Africa, announced plans to travel to South Africa to visit the families of the deceased.

Emergency workers allege they were prevented from participating in the rescue, only gaining full access to the site on Sunday afternoon accusations denied by Pastor Joshuas Synagogue, Church of All Nations.

Thanduxolo Doro and Mpho Molebatsi waited at Johannesburgs OR Tambo airport for days after the collapse for news of their sisters, who had been visiting SCOAN.

Both families had last heard from their relatives hours before the collapse, which happened at about 13:50 local time (12.50 GMT) on Friday 12 September.

It is not that the building collapsed, rather what was done after the collapse we didnt get any news from the church, Doro, whose sister Vathiswa Madikiza died, told the BBC.

When I contacted them they wouldnt tell me anything. We saw reports that emergency workers were denied access initially, access that could have saved lives. The actions of the church after the incident are very telling, he said.

In a saner society, Pastor T.B. Joshua would have been charged for manslaughter following the collapse of the guesthouse of his Synagogue Church of All Nations. It is disappointing to note that the Lagos State Government would allow the whole collapsed building issue to be swept under the carpet. We know that the old Lagos State Government would have by now condoned off that site and taken over and brought the owner of the guesthouse for questioning and possibly charging him/her for manslaughter. And even arresting those church members that prevented the rescue team from accessing the scene of the collapse with the possibility of saving some lives!

Yes, that is the Lagos State Government of old! For the new Lagos State Government is playing politics now and wouldnt want to lose votes from members of Synagogue church. Very painful and very shameful! Why does Nigerian government generally handle anything that concerns clerics with kids glove? The state government does nothing about the noise pollution generated by religious homes every day. It is as if we have come to accept and live with the pollution, whereas these religious homes are supposed to operate by a set standard. Well, we should not be so surprised, when even, our President played out his own politics with the same incident, paying a personal visit to the man of God to condole with him and seen walking side by side with somebody who should have been whisked away and charged to court!

Isnt it about time that the various arms of government started seeing that NOBODY is above the sovereignty of this country? Religious leader or not! It is as if religion has become the fourth arm of government in Nigeria. Hope the Federal Government is not heading towards a diplomatic crisis with South Africa; first we have the issue of the $9.3 billion cash-for-arms scandal and next losing 84 of their citizens in a collapsed building and not showing any sign of prosecuting the offenders. When are we going to get it right in this blessed country of ours?

Tina Abazie,

Plot 7, Acme Road,

Ogba,

Lagos State.
