Ex-La Jolla synagogue executive gets 18 months in embezzlement

Posted By on September 21, 2014

The former executive director of Congregation Beth El synagogue in La Jolla has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $540,000 from the synagogue over fiveyears, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Eric Levine, 37, had control of the synagogue's bank account and credit card from 2008 to 2013, overseeing the synagogue's annual budget of nearly $2 million.

Levine recorded the expenses as Ritual Fund, Rabbi Emeritus, High Holidays, Purim Baskets, landscaping and other things, according to documents filed in federal court in San Diego.

He used the money for trips to Las Vegas, Mexico, Hawaii, Canada and the La Costa Resort and Spa, according to documents. He bought expensive leather furniture and jewelry and paid for Disney vacations and the cost of sending his children to private school, according to documents.

As Levine embezzled the money, the synagogue was forced to lay off workers and delay or eliminate projects such as installing heat in classrooms.

Rabbi Philip Graubart told District Judge Dana Sabow that Levines theft has led to a loss of confidence among members of the synagogue.

Our diminished staff spends much more time on accounting than on our mission of creating a lively Jewish community in San Diego, he said. Its hard to know if well ever be the same."

Sabow said that the sense of betrayal cannot be overstated. Along with the prison sentence, Sabow on Friday ordered Levine to pay $543,000 in restitution.

Synagogue: NEMA advocates forensic test to identify victims

Posted By on September 21, 2014

Mr Charles Otegbade, the Director, Search and Rescue, National Emergency Management Agency, said proper forensic test was needed to identify the victims of the collapsed Synagogue church building.

Otegbade told newsmen on Friday at the site of the collapsed building that the death toll presently stood at 86 and while 131 were still in the hospital.

He said that he was there to extend a warm hand of fellowship to the church on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Otegbade said that NEMAs mandate was to bring succour to people in distress, not just to coordinate rescue efforts.

Experts from Nigeria are working with experts from South Africa, to help in identifying the victims of the collapsed building.

The collapsed building that was used as guest house was mostly occupied by South Africans, he said.

One of the survivors, Temitayo Taiwo, 28, a graduate from the University of West London, South Africa, who works as a business coordinator for the church said he was grateful to God and to the church that he survived.

We were in the rubble for more than 24 hours, everywhere was dark, after this incident I appreciate God the more and I am very grateful to God that I survived, he said.

Perplexing case of developer Lamm charging governmental bias

Town, village deny claims

Developer Shalom Lamm's Bloomingburg housing project, the Villages at Chestnut Ridge, is at the center of controversy in this eastern Sullivan County community where a building moratorium is in effect.JOHN DeSANTO/Times Herald-Record

Published: 2:00 AM - 09/21/14

The battle against Shalom Lamm and his Hasidic housing development, school andnbusinesses is nothing more than "pervasive government-sponsored religious discrimination." It reflects an "anti Semitic animus" that's "unmistakable."

This is the thrust of a $25 million federal lawsuit just filed by Lamm-affiliated businesses, organizations and individuals against the Village of Bloomingburg, the Town of Mamakating and various officials, including Bloomingburg Mayor Frank Gerardi and Mamakating Supervisor Bill Herrmann.

Not only does the civil rights suit ask the United States District Court in White Plains to "end this unlawful campaign, to clear the roadblocks imposed upon lawful development," it aims to stop the Sept. 30 vote to dissolve Bloomingburg into Mamakating and the dissolution itself. That was proposed amid fears the village would be overwhelmed by Lamm's 396-home Hasidic development, which could more than quadruple the village's population of some 400.

Can you be anti-Hasidic and not anti-Semitic?

That was the question posed to one of the region's preeminent Jewish leaders, Rabbi Joel Schwab of Temple Sinai in Middletown, which sits between two Hasidic hot spots Bloomingburg and Kiryas Joel.

To know why the answer is not as black and white as the clothes the Hasidic men wear, Schwab also on the Orange County Human Rights Commission says you must first know why the Hasidim are considered "others," a group that doesn't share the values of the rest of the community and insulates itself from that community.

Because of their devotion, the Hasidim must live within walking distance of a synagogue and places for kosher food and school.
