Synagogue: FG investigating mystery aircraft, says Minister

Posted By on September 20, 2014

Sen Musliu Obanikoro, the Minister of state for Defence, on Friday saidinvestigations were ongoing to unravel the mystery of the aircraft that allegedly caused the collapse of a guesthouse belonging to the Synagogue Church.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Synagogue Church of All Nations had claimed that an unidentified aircraft had hovered above the building many times before it finally came down.

No fewer than 86 persons died while many were seriously injured when the six storey building collapsed on Sept 12 in Lagos.

Speaking with newsmen after a condolence visit to the Church, Obanikoro urged Nigerians to remain calm as the mystery would be unravelled.

We must not pre-empt the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation is under the jurisdiction of the police and the police will do all it can to conclude investigations swiftly.

My appeal is that people should wait for the outcome of the investigation. he added.

Human lives are involved and so the issue must not be trivialised or politicised.

I am here to commisserate with the Church and all the people that lost their lives, the Miinister said.

He, urged journalists to be mindful of what they write while reporting the incident.

Former synagogue executive sentenced for embezzlement

Posted By on September 20, 2014

SAN DIEGO An executive who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from La Jollas Congregation Beth El synagogue and used the money on personal expenses was sentenced in San Diego federal court Friday to 18 months in prison.

Eric S. Levine, 37, pleaded guilty in April to one count of wire fraud.

Levine served as Beth Els executive director from July 2007 to December 2013, overseeing the synagogues annual budget.

Prosecutors said that starting in February 2008, Levine began embezzling money from the synagogue for his own use.

As part of his guilty plea, the defendant admitted misappropriating nearly $395,000 from the synagogue over the five-year period.

Mr. Levine embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars to finance a life of luxury for himself while betraying the people who believed in him, U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said. This defendant was a one-man wrecking ball to this congregation, both financially and emotionally, and today the court imposed a fitting sentence for such abhorrent conduct.

On most occasions, Levine simply used money in the synagogues bank account to pay his own bills directly, according to prosecutors.

They said Levines mischaracterization of payments made it appear that more of Beth Els funds were spent on legitimate synagogue expenses that was actually spent.

Instead of legitimate expenses, the funds were used to pay for a variety of Levines credit card charges, including trips to Mexico, Hawaii and Las Vegas, as well as $1,400 in charges for a personal trainer.

The sense of betrayal cannot be overstated, U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw said as he sentenced the defendant.

Synagogue: South Africans death toll now 84

The number of South Africans said to have died in last Fridays Synagogue Church of All Nations building collapse in Ikotun, Lagos State, has risen to 84.

Pretorias High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said that the figure could increase.

Mnguni said, The number has risen from 67 to 84, with more bodies discovered on Thursday. The number of South Africans who were in the church might be higher, as we believe that some people organised the trip themselves without using travel agents.

He said that there were 349 South Africans visiting the church as of the time of the incident.

Mnguni said forensic tests were still to be conducted to verify the identities of the dead.

One of the South Africans survivors in the incident, Khathuatshelo Ramovha, 28, described his survival as a miracle.

Ramovha, who has returned to his native South Africa, disclosed in an interview with the BBC that he stayed under the rubble for 13 hours before respite finally came.

He said, It was very dark, people were screaming, people were crying, they were shouting: My head my leg. After some time, some stopped screaming.

The 28-year-old, while stating his desire to visit Prophet T.B Joshuas church again, revealed that a pastor in the church had sounded a strange warning to many of them just before the tragedy occurred.

He kept saying: Uncommon blessing attract uncommon challenges. Be ready for any activity, any danger. It was like he was encouraging us to be strong.

Synagogue tragedy: NEMA advocates forensic test

Posted By on September 20, 2014

Mr Charles Otegbade, the Director, Search and Rescue, National Emergency Management Agency, said proper forensic test was needed to identify the victims of the collapsed Synagogue church building.

Otegbade told newsmen on Friday at the site of the collapsed building that the death toll presently stood at 86 and while 131 were still in the hospital.

He said that he was there to extend a warm hand of fellowship to the church on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Otegbade said that NEMAs mandate was to bring succour to people in distress, not just to coordinate rescue efforts.

Experts from Nigeria are working with experts from South Africa, to help in identifying the victims of the collapsed building.

The collapsed building that was used as guest house was mostly occupied by South Africans, he said.

One of the survivors, Temitayo Taiwo, 28, a graduate from the University of West London, South Africa, who works as a business coordinator for the church said he was grateful to God and to the church that he survived.

We were in the rubble for more than 24 hours, everywhere was dark, after this incident I appreciate God the more and I am very grateful to God that I survived, he said.

Synagogue members prevented rescue efforts, death toll to rise

Posted By on September 20, 2014

Followers of a controversial preacher and televangelist prevented rescue workers from getting to victims of a collapsed building in Lagos last week, in an accident that claimed the lives of at least 84 people, according to a Nigerian official.

Nigerian Emergency Management Agency said Friday that lives were lost as a result of church officials preventing workers from rescuing people trapped inside the multi-storey shopping mall and hotel in the port city.

NEMAs spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye told the Associated Press that the building collapsed at 12:44pm on September 12, but emergency responders did not get full access to the site until two days later.

Described as a megachurch, the building was linked to Temitope Balogun Joshua, better known as TB Joshua.

The wealthy preacher has claimed to have miraculously cured people from illnesses, including HIV, and foreseen the untimely death of pop start Michal Jackson.

Farinloye said that rescuers lost critical hours when most lives are saved. Most of the victims were South African.

Nigerian media reported that rescue workers were attacked by church members who also smashed the camera of a TV journalist at the site.

Meanwhile, South Africas high commissioner to Nigeria warned on Friday that the death toll could rise in the coming days.

It is believed that there were 349 South Africans visiting the church at the time of the crash.

South Africa has sent a team of 10 disaster management personnel, including doctors to help in the search.
