Do Ultra-Orthodox Jews Have Better Sex?

Posted By on September 18, 2014

Bedroom tips from Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, a Lubavitcher Dr. Ruth.

When I recently met Rabbi Shmuley Boteach in Central Park, he was wearing Ray-Bans with tight black biking spandex and smoking a cigar. Theres no pork in my cycling outfit, he said when I asked him about the attire. Theres no hidden crucifix. So I cant imagine that Im doing anything wrong. Plenty of rabbis love cycling.

You could sub in sex for cycling, and youd have Boteachs stance on why theres no conflict about his dual roles as ultra-orthodox rabbi and ultra-orthodox Dr. Ruth. Hes the author of books Kosher Sexand Kosher Adultery. His sex counseling reality show Shalom at Homeon TLC, in which he moves into the homes of troubled couples for a week and coaches them on their relationships, is scheduled to launch in Canada later this month, and last month began airing in Israel. Oprah is a big fan and gave him a talk show on her XM station.

Earlier this year he published his latest book, Kosher Lust,in which he argues that love alone cant keep a marriage together: Great sex , he argues, is the glue that keeps couples strong. Science of Us spoke with him about this philosophy and about how secular couples can apply ultra-orthodox sex tips to their own lives.

Lets talk about sex in the orthodox community, which you say can be hot.I know what people say: You guys are so frigid and inhibited." Its absolutely not true. Among us religious Jews, sex is a big deal. Its a religious obligation. In Jewish law, a man has to make his wife orgasm before he does.

Really? Its in the Talmud.

Do the scriptures weigh in on other specifics, like one position over another? All positions are great. You can do circus acrobatics. But nothing can supplant the intimacy of the missionary position. Jewish law says there has to be full-body contact. Sex is supposed to be "bone of one bone, flesh of one flesh." The Zohar [a kabbalistic text] says youre supposed to kiss, exchange breaths, and look into each others eyes. Religious Jewish couples are supposed to practice eyes-open sex.

Orthodox women dont have a reputation for flaunting their sexiness. The average Western couples are left with only three erogenous zones. On a mans body, it is basically his genitalia, the tush, and on a womans body, you get one more, her breasts. In Orthodox Jewish circles, you have others, like the womans hair [usually covered]. Hair is one of the sexiest things around. My wife has beautiful hair, thank God. She wears a wig, in public. But not around me. Its ours.

You also believe that Orthodox women have something else going for them sexually: unavailability, which apparently drives Orthodox men crazy. In orthodox Jewish marriage, theres a part every single month when sex is forbidden. Youre not even allowed to touch. Its 12 days out of every month: five days of menstruation, and seven days after.

You believe unavailability is good for every couple? Its not easy to keep, but it leads to lust.

The Synagogue building collapse

THE collapse on Friday of a six-storey building at Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun, Lagos, was a triple tragedy. Not only were lives and property destroyed, it also demonstrated the failure of state institutions to protect citizens by simple adherence to rules. Worse, it exposed the prevailing culture of impunity as demonstrated in the bizarre reaction of church officials.

The tragedy was only the latest in frequent building collapses in the country. According to press reports, the six-storey building suddenly caved in, burying hundreds of persons in the rubble. Conflicting accounts say the four upper floors were still under construction and that neighbours had noticed it sway in recent times, claims that can only be established by a thorough investigation.

But the human cost is undeniable and its true extent is still unfolding. Latest figures by the National Emergency Management Agency indicate that 70 corpses, many of them foreigners and mostly women, had been recovered by Wednesday, while 131 had been rescued alive, including a 45-year-old woman who survived after being trapped four days under the rubble.

The Lagos State government cannot escape censure for this tragedy. For a state that has suffered numerous building collapses in recent years, the Synagogue tragedy, except investigations uncover deliberate sabotage, is a ringing indictment of the inadequacy of its building control and monitoring enforcement. It calls into question its capacity to ensure strict compliance with its building codes and the efficiency of its agencies to monitor and prevent such disasters. The building was being built in full public view at the densely populated Ikotun area of the city and effective monitoring by physical planning and building control officials ought to have noticed and acted accordingly.

Unless they change their narratives, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Abimbola Animashaun, and the officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, have told reporters that the church did not have approval to add three floors to the original two-storey building, a grave infraction. We have investigated and found that they (SCOAN) had no approval for the additional structures, Animashaun told reporters at the scene. The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Planning, Olutoyin Ayinde, added, We have no proof that the church had permit to add to the existing structure. LSBCA and the Council of Registered Engineers have commenced investigations but, already, preliminary findings show that the church may have tough questions to answer. Requests to SCOAN to show the approvals have not been met.

The behaviour of the church officials has been bizarre and sickening. Reports say that, rather than quickly mobilise help, church members were hostile to rescuers and indeed initially prevented neighbours and officials from fully securing the disaster site. Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye, said, The church members have been very aggressive and hostile to us; they attacked us and we had to withdraw our services. I was attacked; officials of LSBCA and the general manager of LASEMA were also attacked There were also reports of attacks on journalists and smashing of cameras.

Confronted with such a tragedy, even the conduct of the head of the church, Temitope Joshua, was not initially helpful. First, he and his members sought to downplay the number of dead, giving the figures as only three, and later, as the bodies piled up, less than 10, as if the death of even one person is acceptable in the face of suspicions that the church might have been careless. South Africa alone has since lamented that it lost 67 of its nationals in the disaster.

Joshua added a fresh twist by showing a video clip of an aircraft purportedly hovering over the building shortly before its collapse and alleged sabotage and threats against the church and his person. Although this sounds rather diversionary, investigators should examine all angles to unravel the cause or causes of the collapse and with a firm resolve to punish all those found culpable, to prevent the frequent collapses.

Experts say buildings collapse due to use of low quality building materials, incompetent artisans, weak supervision, non-compliance with specifications/standards, poor design, poor maintenance and weak foundations. More crucially, corruption and laxity at state and local levels allow builders to erect structurally weak buildings that may eventually end up collapsing when subjected to natural or man-made stress.

Synagogue: SAfrica sends DNA experts to Nigeria No plan to seal church Lagos

Posted By on September 18, 2014

The South African Government has sent a team of search and rescue and body identification experts to Nigeria to assist in the search for South African victims of the church building collapse in Lagos.

A six-storey building owned by the Synagogue Church of All Nations had collapsed on Friday, trapping a large number of people.

As of Wednesday, no fewer than 131 victims had been rescued, while the National Emergency Management Agency announced that the death toll had risen to 80.

The South African Government had said on Tuesday that five different South African church tour groups, comprising about 300 people, were staying in the guest house when it collapsed.

An online news portal, IOL reported on Wednesday that many South Africans remain unaccounted for.

The South Africa High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said it was difficult to identify the remains of South African victims.

Mnguni said the embassy had deployed some of its officials in the scene of the six- storey building that collapsed.

The High Commissioner, who said he was in Lagos to monitor the rescue efforts, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Wednesday that many South African citizens were unaccounted for.

Mnguni said, I have dispatched some officials to the scene to monitor and identify some of our citizens that were involved and I am waiting for their report, but you know that rescue efforts are ongoing, so we dont know when the report would come in. We cant give a final figure on casualty for now.

He stated that 20 South Africans who were treated for varying degrees of injuries had been discharged, while some of them had gone back to South Africa.
