TB Joshua links Synagogue tragedy to plane

Posted By on September 15, 2014

Pastor of the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun, Lagos State, Temitope Joshua, one of Nigerias best known preachers, has linked a small plane circling over thechurchs guesthouse to its subsequent collapse.

At least 19 people died and 119 were injured when the two-storey guesthouse for members of the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed on Friday.

There is no official comment. Local officials have said additional floors were being added to the structure.

Joshua also known as the Prophet regularly preaches to vast crowds.

The popular televangelist says a small plane had circled over the building four times before it collapsed on Friday afternoon and it may have been an attempt to kill him.

It was yesterday, Friday, as I was praying; they came to call me that there was an airplane hovering over the church. They said it is like it wanted to land, his statement said.

He said about 30 minutes later, it came over the building several times.

About five minutes after, the building came down.

He gave journalists a CCTV video clip of the alleged plane, urging them to use their discretion to write on what they saw.

AFP news agency reports cited an official putting the number of deaths at 40. Many foreigners are believed to have been there at the time.

Nigerian church collapses killing 44

Posted By on September 15, 2014

LAGOS, Nigeria, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A Christian church in Lagos, Nigeria, collapsed Friday, killing 44 people.

A two-story guesthouse at The Synagogue, Church of All Nations was undergoing a construction project to add three more levels to the building when it collapsed, Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, told CNN.

About 130 people were pulled alive from the rubble of the fallen building.

The rescue of trapped people was hampered by church members who refused to allow emergency workers access to the site.

"The church members were very aggressive and tried attacking emergency responders," Farinloye said.

The church is run by televangelist T.B. Joshua, who is called The Prophet.

Synagogue Church Tragedy: Pastor TB Joshua Links Building Collapse That Killed 17 People To Strange Aircraft

Posted By on September 15, 2014

The Founder and General Overseer of The Synagogue Church of All Nations, Temitope Joshua, has linked the collapse of an uncompleted Guest House owned by his church to a strange aircraft which he said hovered around the building before its collapse.

Scene of the collapsed building that killed 17 people at Synagogue church in lagos Mr. Joshua said the plane hovered around the collapsed building for over 30 minutes.

The clergyman spoke just as emergency officials told this newspaper that 17 people died in the incident while 123 others were evacuated alive and rushed to hospital.

Briefing journalists, including a PREMIUM TIMES reporter, on the incident on Saturday, the pastor played a CCTV footage of a flying aircraft to back his claim.

In the footage, a plane was seen flying over the collapsed guest house at four different times on Friday morning 11: 30 a.m, 11: 43 a.m, 11:45 a.m and 11: 54 a.m.

The building collapsed at 12:44 p.m Friday afternoon.

PREMIUM TIMES was unable to authenticate the footage, and it remains unclear whether there is indeed a relationship between the flying aircraft and the collapse of the building.

But in his speech, Mr. Joshua insisted the aircraft, which flew past almost an hour before the incident, was responsible for the collapse of the building.

The pastor said he was the target of the attack. Immediately I left the prayer room (which is a 10-minute drive form the church) for the church, I got a call that a jet was hovering over the prayer room but as I finished bathing and moved to the prayer room, I got another call that the jet has moved to the church and that was it, Mr. Joshua said.

Members cannot be the target, the easier way to stop this church is to get the head and from my explanation, you know the truth, he added.

First synagogue to open in Hoboken in more than 100 years

Posted By on September 15, 2014

The last letters of a newly hand-written Torah were inked in Hoboken today to mark the first opening of a synagogue in the Mile Square City in more than 100 years.

Throughout the late morning, Rabbi Moshe Shapiro orchestrated a Torah ceremony at Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Center, at 80 Park St., where children and adults contributed to writing the last of the 304,805 Hebrew letters in the sacred text.

"We are so excited," said Shapiro. "It is such a big milestone."

After the scribe finished writing the letters on the unraveled scroll and allowed the ink to dry, the completed Sephardic Torah which took more than a year to complete was placed in a ceremonial case.

And then the celebration began.

More than 250 people marched from the new synagogue to Washington Street with the Torah placed in its ceremonial vessel. With traditional Jewish music playing, people waved flags and children held small torches to mark the occasion.

Local politicians also attended the Torah ceremony, including Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner.

The Chabad Jewish Center moved into Hoboken since September 2011, but never had a permanent home in the city until today, Shapiro said.

The 1,800-square footlocation at 80 Park St. will serve as a house of worship, Hebrew school and community center for those in Hoboken, Jersey City and the surrounding cities, Shapiro added.

In addition, the new Torah was written in tribute to the 64 members of the Israel Defense Forces that died in the most recent war in Gaza, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The names of the 64 Israelis were also inscribed on the ceremonial vessel that will house the new Torah.

Published September 14, 2014.

More than 25 Spanish cities launched a cultural program centered around their Jewish heritage in celebration of the 15th European Day of Jewish Culture.

Spain was one of about 30 countries marking the Jewish culture day on Sunday, which this year focused on women in Judaism.

The activities offered by Spains Red de Juderias, a national network of 26 cities where authorities have undertaken conservation and restoration of Jewish heritage sites, will focus during the week of Sept. 14 on the role of women in Jewish culture.

In Barcelona, the city is organizing a scientific conference led by the writer and translator Moriah Ferrus on the subject part of a five-day program on Judaism which started on Sept. 13.

Opting for a less intellectual approach, the city of Cuenta organized a food fair to celebrate the gastronomical inventions of the Sephardic housewife. Many of the cities are offering concerts of Ladino music, with a special emphasis on music written and performed by women.

In Brussels, the day is being marked with the reopening of the Jewish Museum of Belgium, which has remained closed since the murder of four people there in May. A plaque commemorating the victims of the shooting was unveiled on Sept. 9. at the museums entrance. The previous day, the City of Brussels increased the museums annual budget for security from $6.500 to $38,000.

Kansas City Connection: Lots to do in KC this fall

Posted By on September 14, 2014

If you ask me, fall is the best time of year to explore Kansas City. In addition to the bright colors and pleasantly cool temperatures, an abundance of festivals, concerts and activities make an autumn visit to KC a must. Here are a few seasonal highlights and ideas for what to check out.

WaterFire Kansas City (Oct. 10-11) on Brush Creek

Haunted houses in the West Bottoms

Drink coffee and take a walk

Kansas City is currently experiencing what economists call a bean boom, i.e. a proliferation of high-quality, locally owned coffee shops. Many of them are located near some of the citys finest parks and trails, setting up a perfect opportunity to grab a cafe au lait to go and take a stroll.

The excellent new Crows Coffee, 304 E. 51st St., is right next to the Trolley Track Trail and not far from Loose Park.

Mud Pie, 1615 W. 39th St., is just down the road from the hilly, wooded contours of Roanoke Park.

And Quay Coffee, 412 Delaware St. in the City Market, nearly crosses paths with the Riverfront Heritage Trail.

Go record shopping

For a few years, it looked like record buying in Kansas City might be a thing of the past, but several stores have opened recently that offer a mix of new, reissued and used vinyl.
