Strathfield Synagogue in western Sydney closes doors, faces sale due to dwindling congregation

Posted By on May 15, 2014

ABC Rabbi Samuel Tov-Lev's contract was terminated at the Strathfield Synagogue.

Samuel Tov-Lev has been a rabbi for 40 years, the last 15 of them at Strathfield Synagogue in western Sydney.

These days he is out of a job and living in a boarding house after being evicted from the rabbi's residence.

"One morning a sheriff came and he told me (to get) out. A locksmith came with them and changed all the locks and I went immediately to the street [with] nowhere to go," he said.

The rabbi's troubles started in October 2010 when he received a letter from the synagogue's board of directors terminating his contract and giving him six months to move out of the adjoining residence.

The letter said the synagogue was no longer viable and the decision had been taken to close the doors.

"The members were very upset to hear that. Being consecrated as a holy place, it is a sin to close it, saying it is not viable," said Rabbi Tov-Lev.

By his own admission, the congregation has dwindled over the years as the Jewish community moved to Sydney's eastern suburbs and north shore.

"I had to ring people to come to the service in order have a minyan, which is a quorum of 10 men," he said.

Built in 1959, Strathfield Synagogue was once the heart of a vibrant community of Jewish migrants who came to Australia after World War II.

Canada court upholds extradition of alleged synagogue bomber

Posted By on May 15, 2014

OTTAWA , May 15 (UPI) --A Canadian court upheld a decision to extradite a suspected bomber of a Paris synagogue to France.

French authorities allege Dr. Hassan Diab, 60, a sociology professor at Canada's Carlton University and the University of Ottawa, was a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine member when it planted a bomb outside Paris' Copernic Street Synagogue in 1980. The blast killed four people and injured more than 40 others.

Diab, a Canadian citizen of Lebanese descent, has denied a role in the incident. He was arrested in 2008 at the request of the French government.

He was committed for extradition in 2011 despite an acknowledgement by the presiding judge that the case was weak. The Ontario Court of Appeal this week upheld the judge's decision, noting the judge and the federal justice minister who signed the extradition order made no legal errors in coming to the decision.

Plaque honors South Bend's community melting pot

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Just beyond left field at Four Winds Field sits the Sons of Israel Synagogue, which was built in 1901 and now serves as the Silver Hawks team store.

The former synagogue was recognized by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and the National Register of Historic Places in the summer of 2013 as a historic landmark.

Now, the 113-year-old buildings place in history will be solidified at 6:30 p.m. Friday with a plaque dedication at the ballpark. The public is welcome to attend the unveiling.

The building is a present-day manifestation of the past, Randy Ray, executive director of the Center for History, told the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1jitmpd ).

This is a nice tribute.

An important part of South Bends history remains with that building, said David Piser, president of the Michiana Jewish Historical Society.

Piser said people of all nationalities would gather at the synagogue for worship. It was a community melting pot, he said.

The building served as South Bends first permanent synagogue and later was home to the Bnai Yisrael Reconstructionist Congregation before closing its doors in 1990.

Sitting vacant for more than 20 years, the structure was threatened by demolition many times, but people such as Piser and his late uncle, Mendel Piser, fought to keep it standing.

Now thanks to their work, and the $1 million investment by Silver Hawks owner Andrew Berlin to renovate the structure, the synagogue stands with a new purpose.

Boise's Ahavath Beth Israel Says "We Do" To Gay Weddings May 18

The veracity and intention of that description will never be more apt than on Sunday, May 18, whenin light of U.S. District Magistrate Judge Candy Dale overturning Idaho's ban on gay marriagethe synagogue will offer free wedding ceremonies to gay coupleswith licenses.

Arlen Donald, chairman of the Ritual Committee at Ahavath Beth Israel, said the synagogue is opening its doors so that "people have the opportunity to get married in a beautiful and historic building and have some community there to give them some support."

Weddings will be performed one at a time and Donald will officiate (he is state certified), although they are looking at getting another officiant or twoDonald said Rabbi Daniel Fink is coincidentally performing a wedding out of town this weekend and wished he could be here. CABI will have a sign-in book, and though there may be a wait, the synagogue is providing refreshments and a place for couples to hang out until their big moment.

In addition, local photographerMelanie Folwellhas offered to provide free wedding photos.

Donald added that he and several other officiants plan to be at the courthouse Friday, offering on-the-spot weddings for couples with their licenses, but CABI also wanted to offer more.

"We wanted to give people the opportunity to get family and friends involved, get people into town and have the wedding in a nice place with pictures," Donald said.

Moving and Shaking: Obama at Shoah Foundation, Righteous Among the Nations Award given

Recalling the horrors of the Holocaust, President Barack Obama urged nations to fight growing anti-Semitism and threats against Israel in his remarks on May 7 to 1,200 supporters of the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation. Obama called for confronting a rising tide of anti-Semitism around the world.

We see attacks on Jews in the streets of major Western cities, public places marred by swastikas, he continued. From some foreign governments we hear the worst kind of anti-Semitic scapegoating.

At the same time, Its up to us to speak out against rhetoric that threatens the existence of the Jewish homeland and to sustain Americas unshakable commitment to Israels security, Obama declared to loud applause.

The gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Shoah Foundation by filmmaker Steven Spielberg, following the international success of his Holocaust movie, Schindlers List.

Spielberg presented the Ambassador for Humanity Award to Obama at the event, which raised $4 million for the foundations work in compiling video testimonies of 52,000 Holocaust survivors, liberators and other witnesses. The work is continuing with testimonies from the last survivors of the 1915 genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and of the Japanese massacre of Chinese in Nanjing in 1937. More recent testimonies are being collected from survivors of mass killings in Cambodia and Rwanda.

Stressing the importance of these testimonies collected by the Shoah Foundation, Obama said, The purpose of memory is not simply to preserve the past, it is to protect the future. We can teach our children the hazards of tribalism. We can teach our children to speak out against the casual slur.

Bruce Springsteen, the evenings musical entertainment, earned a standing ovation from an audience sprinkled with Hollywoods heaviest hitters for his renditions of The Promised Land and Dancing in the Dark.

TV host and comedian Conan OBrien served as the evenings host and suggested that given the massive traffic jams caused by security for the presidents visit, perhaps he could just send his message by Skype the next time around. Praising the Shoah Foundations work, OBrien deadpanned that it was recording evidence of intolerance long before Donald Sterlings girlfriend.

Even with the array of eloquent speakers, they were almost upstaged by Celina Biniaz, who was the youngest person included on Schindlers famous list.
