Strength in unity

Posted By on May 14, 2014

Toward the end of his life, Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel, Israels first Sephardic chief rabbi, composed his last will and testament to the Jewish people. In what is now considered a classic spiritual document and taught in schools throughout Israel, the theme of Rabbi Uziels will is the unity of the Jewish people. What follows is one of the most famous excepts:

Divisiveness and factionalism are the most dangerous enemies we have, while peace and unity are our greatest strengths, as they form the eternal foundation for our national survival. Preserve and strengthen these two pillars, as they will strengthen you.

Rabbi Uziel wrote these words in 1953, a mere five years into the modern-day State of Israel. A native of Jerusalem whose life and rabbinic career spanned three ruling administrations in the Land of Israel (Ottoman, British and Israeli), Rabbi Uziel directly participated in the formation and founding of the Jewish state, knowing how difficult a road it was to achieve independence and statehood. The last thing he wanted was for this precious new Jewish achievement to risk destruction from strife within Israeli society. But just five years into Israels existence, internal conflict abounded, and, being a student of Jewish history, Rabbi Uziel did not want to see Israels unfortunate past history in the Land of Israel repeated.

In this weeks Torah portion Parashat BChukotai God tells the Jewish people:

If you follow My laws and are careful to keep My commandments I will grant peace in the land but if you do not listen to Me, and you denigrate My commandments I will make the land desolate, and I will scatter you among the nations.(Leviticus 26:3,6,14,20).

There are 613 commandments in the Torah, but as a student of Jewish history, Rabbi Uziel knew that the violation of only one commandment caused the Jews to be exiled from their own land: You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18).

Prior to 1948, the last time the Jewish people held some form of sovereignty in the Land of Israel was during the years 132-135 C.E. This brief three-year reign was during the Bar Kochba revolt, when the Jews temporarily defeated the Romans and regained independence. The Bar Kochba revolt ended in a bloody defeat of the rebel forces, the complete destruction of Jerusalem and the end of Jewish independence until 1948.

In contemplating this depressing defeat of the Jews, the Talmud does not discuss any mistakes made by the Jewish military. Instead, it tells this story:

It is taught that Rabbi Akiva had 12,000 pairs of students (24,000), and all of them died from a plague during the same time period (the Omer), because they did not treat each other with respect (Talmud Yevamot 62:b, Midrash Genesis Rabbah 65:3).

It is more than a tragic irony that the students of Rabbi Akiva the great teacher who proclaimed Love your neighbor as yourself this is the greatest of all principles in the Torah all died a tragic death from the violation of this very principle. The divisiveness and factionalism of Rabbi Akivas students ultimately contributed to the downfall of the briefly independent Jewish state under Bar Kochba, reminiscent of the sinat chinam (baseless hatred) that caused the downfall of the Temple in Jerusalem 65 years earlier. With the mistakes of Jewish history recurring too frequently, Rabbi Uziel did not want to see the Jews make the same tragic mistakes again in the young new Jewish state. He did not want to see the land desolate, and the Jewish people scattered among the nations. Instead, he wanted to see peace in the land.

District would be split to elect separate members

PINE BUSH Could a bloc of new Hasidic voters in Bloomingburg or any group in any area of the district take over the Pine Bush school board?

Fears of that happening is one reason a proposal that the district be divided into zones to elect separate members of the Board of Education has become a major issue among candidates for the school board.

Three of the four candidates for the two open seats support the move, with the fourth saying the idea should at least be explored. But they all say that the original proposal advanced by a leader of the group against a private girls school that would serve the 396-home Hasidic development in Bloomingburg is no longer just about Bloomingburg.

Tuesday, the four candidates for two open seats on the Pine Bush school board also discussed the rollout of Common Core.

"Like building an airplane in mid-air," says Marianne Serratore about the standardized nationwide curriculum.

"About as effective as the rollout of Obamacare," says Eric Meier.

But while Serratore - an elementary school principal who's been "extensively trained" in Common Core - believes "high standards are a good thing," she and Becky Christner also feel Common Core has "too many standards."

Congregation Mekor Shalom, Conservative Jewish Synagogue in North Tampa, first Tampa synagogue to embrace a voluntary …

Posted By on May 13, 2014

In an effort to attract families and other members who may be turned-off by the concept of traditional dues, Mekor Shalom, the newest Conservative synagogue in Tampa is adopting a relatively new concept: a 100% voluntary contribution system.

We are a shul (synagogue) where the presence and involvement of every person is valued, says Mekor Shalom President Chris Shulman. We know that not everyone can afford the same level of dues, and we never want ability to pay to be seen as a barrier to membership and involvement.

Synagogue revenue is traditionally derived from three sources: fundraising activities/events; donations in honor or memory of loved ones; and membership dues. Increasingly, this last component has proven problematic for synagogues, says Shulman.

He says the reasons for this vary. For example, members incomes may have decreased; some may underreport incomes in order to avoid having greater dues levied against them than they may wish to contribute; members may be uncomfortable with and even resent dues they cannot afford; and almost anyone who has had to go through a dues accommodation process even when handled with care and respect by the synagogue can come away with feelings of embarrassment and resentment as a result of the process. Among other things, a traditional dues structure can lead some congregants to feel that what matters most to their shul is how big a check they write, says Shulman.

Congregation Mekor Shalom, a conservative synagogue in the Carrollwood section of North Tampa, rejects that approach.

It elected to follow an emerging trend pioneered by Temple Israel (in Sharon, Mass.), which saw a rejuvenation in its membership and participation levels after embracing the voluntary financial commitment model. Congregation Mekor Shalom is the first congregation in Tampa to implement a Voluntary Financial Commitment or VFC in lieu of a traditional dues structure.

We do not want folks to feel embarrassed because they need to ask for a dues waiver or the like. So, at Mekor Shalom, each member makes a personal decision as to how much to give to support the shul, Shulman adds. The no-dues, VFC model helps to make all members truly feel part of their shul, which encourages members to participate in other ways, giving of their time, making in-kind donations, and the like.

The synagogues Voluntary Financial Contribution approach is part of creating the sense of connection that has been crucial to Congregation Mekor Shaloms success.

Although its been not quite a year since Mekor Shalom opened its doors, the synagogue has grown to more than 75 families, and Shulman expects this number to continue increasing.
