Hojatoleslam Ali Younesi, President Hassan Rohani's adviser for ethnic groups and religious minorities, visited a church and a synagogue in the city of Shiraz on Friday.

VP: Extremist religious sentiments a threat to world peace

Presidents special assistant for ethnic and religious minorities Ali Younesi said religious extremist notion like that of the al-Qaeda has no place in Islamic thinking because it poses threat to global peace. He made the remarks here in southern country while talking to a gathering of Iranian Jews Friday evening. He said other divine religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism too dismiss such extreme notions.

Younesi further stressed that the general policy of the Islamic system in Iran and the present government in particular is that no Iranian be deprived of its rights for religious reasons.

He said the Islamic system believes that followers of all divine religions are free in conducting their religious rituals. He also noted that good manners of the ancient Iranians made the country a cradle for all divine religions wherein followers of all religions were capable of leading a peaceful life.

Representative of the Iranian Jews in the parliament Siamak Moreh Sedq said that members of the Jewish community have all throughout the history proved to be good Iranians fulfilling their national commitments.

High-ranking Iranian cleric visits Shiraz synagogue, confirms Biblical version of Jewish homeland

High-ranking Iranian cleric visits Shiraz synagogue, confirms Biblical version of Jewish homeland

Even if this was part of the Iranian president Hassan Rouhanis campaign of smiles for the West, the visit to the Shiraz synagogue Friday night, May 1, by the head of his assistant for minority affairs, Hojat- Islam Ali Yunessi, was especially noteworthy. He was the first high-ranking Iranian cleric to visit a Jewish synagogue in a decade and, moreover, he delivered a speech in praise of Irans ancient Jewish communitys successful coexistence with other groups.

But most remarkably, he admitted that historical research and archeological excavations in the last 150 years had corroborated the Biblical account of the deeds of the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great (550-530 BCE). (The Bible recounts that Cyrus issued a fabled decree for the emancipation of slaves, including the Jewish people, from Babylonian captivity, and allowed them to return to their homeland in Judah and rebuild their Temple in Jerusalem.)

That reference alone will undoubtedly be enough to bring Irans radical elements down on Yunessis head for his temerity in gainsaying precepts laid down by the founder of its Islamic Revolution. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini declared the Jewish Bible a forgery because of its many contradictions of the Koran text and denounced all Persian rulers prior to his revolution as symbols of despotism and repression.

Yanessi did, however, take the precaution of pointing out that it would be a mistake to equate Judaism and Zionism because, he said, some Jews are anti-Zionist. According to debkafiles Iranian sources, Yanessi acted out a gesture on behalf of President Rouhani that was designed to allay Iranian Jews fear of fallout from the constant denunciations of the rulers of Tehran by Israels leaders.

The Voice of America TV this week quoted the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef as cursing the Iranians and hoping for their destruction. Although this quote was lifted from a speech the rabbi made many years ago, it got Iranian Jews worried.

But Rouhani sent his ally to the synagogue most of all in the hope of winning points with American Jews and their support for the comprehensive nuclear accord soon to be signed between Iran and the Six Powers.

The Iranian president has demonstrated notable diplomatic and tactical versatility for making sure that the accord goes through and results in the substantial easing of sanctions, urgently needed to boost the ailing Iranian economy. Tehran is pinning high hopes on the visit to Israel this week by US National Security Adviser Susan Rice and the senior US negotiator Wendy Sherman on a twofold mission:

1. To try and talk Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu out of his absolute conviction that the accord to be signed, which will acknowledge Iran as a nuclear threshold state, is bad and harmful to Israels and world security. 2. If that doesnt work, Rice and Sherman will try and obtain an Israeli pledge not to resort to a military strike against Irans nuclear facilities, an action that would scuttle the Obama administrations entire Iran strategy. The coming visit by these two senior American officials has caused few ripples in Israel. However, for the Iranians, so much is at stake, that Rouhani sent a prominent cleric to stand up in a Shiraz synagogue and underwrite Cyrus the Greats acknowledgement of the Jewish homeland in Judah and their temple in Jerusalem. He considered it was worthwhile for the sake of an international accord that accepts Irans nuclear threshold status and averts an Israeli attack.

Jewish American Heritage Month | Jewish Women's Archive

Posted By on May 4, 2014

Every year, the president proclaims May Jewish American Heritage Month. The Jewish Women's Archive invites you to join us in honoring the legacy of American Jewish women.

In 2006, President George W. Bush officially established May as Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) after a campaign led by Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and with the co-sponsorship of the late Senator Arlen Specter. Learn more about the creation of JAHM in This Week in History.

In the spring of 2010, when ESL teacher Deborah Ross attended the first ever White House reception for Jewish American Heritage Month, she found herself in the company of many Jewish Americans, all of whom had been invited to attend because of their contributions to American life. She wondered how they would answer the question: How has being Jewish affected your life and career? Is that why you are here?

She undertook to explore these questions in a series of hour-long interviews with Jewish women living in the Washington, D.C. area. Each of them had been an active member of the community a physician in a neighborhood clinic, a pioneer broadcaster, a food writer, a womans rights lawyer, a filmmaker, a rabbi, an artist, an advocate for womens health. JWA has created an online exhibit based on her interviews to commemorate Jewish American Heritage Month.

Follow "This Day of Jewish American Heritage" to connect every day in May to stories of American Jewish women.

We have created a special badge that can be used to display each day's item on your webpage. You can cut and paste the necessary code from the JAHM Badge Page.

JWAs entertaining documentary, Making Trouble, introduces six of the greatest comedians of the last century Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and Wendy Wassersteinall Jewish women. Hosted by four of todays leading comicsJudy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Cory Kahaney, and Jessica Kirson it's the true saga of what it means to be Jewish, female, and funny.

Hang a poster of one or more of the 18 trailblazing Jewish women featured in JWAs poster series in your home, office, classroom, library, synagogue or any place else. Order one for $5 or the whole set for $25, including shipping and handling.
