The Center for Active Design has named winners of its inaugural Excellence awards, which recognize the role of design in encouraging physical activity to combat obesity and chronic disease. A jury selected four winning projects and two honorable mentions, as well as a Leadership in Active Design Excellence award honoring an early adopter with a track record of active design implementation.

The selection criteria required built projects to be complete and to have implemented at least one of the centers four active design categories: active transportation, active recreation, healthy food access, or active building.

The winners include:

Come October, when discount designer-apparel chain Century 21 opens an outpost at the Gallery at Market East, Philadelphia will gain a part of a New York City retail institution known for both its business acumen and its community engagement.

The department-store company last week signed a lease with mall owner Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust to fill 100,000 square feet, mostly on the second floor of the old Strawbridge & Clothier store at 801 Market St.

In announcing the agreement, Joseph Coradino, PREIT's chief executive officer, called Century 21 an "iconic" retailer that "meets or exceeds the sales of any luxury department store in most malls in this country."

The family-owned chain is privately held, so it does not release its financial figures. But business-services company Manta estimated its annual revenue at $160 million, a figure based on eight stores, all in the New York metropolitan area.

Century 21 Department Stores L.L.C. was founded in 1961 by cousins Sonny and Al Gindi, from a family prominent in New York's Sephardic Jewish community. Sonny Gindi died in 2012 at age 88. The company is currently run by Al Gindi's son, Raymond, who did not respond to a request for an interview for this article.

The chain's flagship store is across the street from the site of the World Trade Center. It was damaged but not destroyed during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Barry Berman, a retail expert and marketing professor at Hofstra University, called Century 21 an "extreme value retailer" that relies on "opportunistic buying."

"They really do not have a marketing plan per se," Berman said. "What they love to do is to find a designer who is cleaning out their warehouse or, if Bloomingdale's decides to cancel an order, they will pick up the stock from the manufacturer. They will buy things at a fraction of wholesale and sell them at extreme value."

A Hasidic Brooklyn man scored a no-jail plea deal Monday for dousing bleach on an anti sex abuse activist - an agreement that earned prosecutors a stinging rebuke from the victim.

Meilech Schnitzler, 38, will get five years of probation for felony assault after admitting he threw a cup of Clorox on Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg in December 2012.

The acid attack came amid fury in the Satmar sect over the conviction of a prominent counselor for molesting a teen, and days after Rosenberg accused the defendant's dad of being a pedophile.

The 64-year-old victim is a polarizing figure in the Jewish community who campaigned against former Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and for the election of DA Kenneth Thompson.

He strongly blasted the plea deal as he walked out of Brooklyn Supreme Court.

"We changed the DA but we didn't change any behavior in the DA's office," he lamented. "The guy walks free ... where is our protection?"

Critics have claimed Hynes was too soft on members of the insular ultra-Orthodox community who intimidate abuse victims and their supporters.

SKOKIE, Ill. (CBS) Holocaust survivors and their families gathered this afternoon in a Skokie synagogue for what has been the largest survivor event in the Midwest.

Seats were full at the Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob Synagogue to mark the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps.

Steve Katz told the crowd he was among the lucky ones, as he was able to leave Germany in 1940, but had to leave his parents and sibling behind.

Henry Jelen, co-chair of the commemoration committee, says second generation holocaust survivors are to be honored in addition to their parents, for the children are the ones keeping the faith alive.

Survivors and their offspring lit six large remembrance candles each one representing one million Jews killed in the Holocaust.
