Posted By on April 28, 2014

The Palm Beach Synagogue held a dinner party to honor members of the community who have participated in the synagogues $10 million building project.

The party was held March 20 at the Palm Beach home of Nancy and Don Carter.

Special recognition was given to major benefactor, Robert M. Beren, and his children and their spouses.

Palm Beach Synagogue, which has just celebrated its 20th anniversary, has flourished into a center of Jewish life and activity in Palm Beach with more than 300 members. In the summer of 2011, the synagogue entered the last phase of its recent building renovations and the entire east facade on North County Road was transformed into a unified exterior keeping with the existing architecture.

Among those attending were Lynn Brodsky, Carol and David Feinberg, Harris Fried, June Garson, Barbara Greenwald, Giovana and Abe Haruvi, Gloria Kaylie, Rhonda Klein, Nini Krever and Eric Weiner, Jeri and Ken Kronen, William Langfan, David Phillips, Frida Reiderman, Fiona and Michael Scharf, Dinie and Rabbi Moshe Scheiner, Janet and Ken Shur, Sandra and Rick Smith, Devorah and Rabbi Didy Waks, Gayle and Armond Waxman, Lois and Martin Zelman, and Barbara T. R. Zimet.

Synagogue upset with plans for nearby Dunkin' Donuts

Posted By on April 28, 2014

A proposed Dunkin' Donuts move in South Portland is causing some controversy.

There is currently already a 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts at the corner on Main Street near Westbrook Street

CAFUA Management, which owns Dunkin' Donuts franchises, told the city it wanted to move to where the St. Johns the Evangelist Church is, about a block away from the current location. That couldn't happen because of current zoning laws.

Now the proposed location is next to the current Dunkin' Donuts. It's land that the city owns, but the new building could cause shadows in the nearby Bet Ha'am Synagogue's sanctuary and garden.

South Portland Mayor Jerry Jalbert said the city council seems split on whether to lease the land or not, but will discuss it when they talk about zoning procedures at Monday night's council workshop.

CAFUA Management did not return calls for comment.

South Portland City Council weighs dilemma of doughnut shop location

Posted:Today Updated: 12:51 AM Zoning changes could be key in determining the site of a Dunkin Donuts shop.

By Matt Byrne mbyrne@pressherald.com Staff Writer

Theres a neighborhood to the left and a synagogue to the right, and stuck in the middle might be a new Dunkin Donuts and its drive-thru.

On Monday, the South Portland City Council will consider the first part of a package of zoning changes that could help determine the fate and the final site of the proposed Dunkin Donuts shop.

An initial plan to tear down a former church to make way for the Dunkin Donuts upset neighbors who said a 24-hour restaurant with a drive-thru would bring light and noise pollution. But a newer plan that would spare the church has drawn criticism from a synagogue, whose leaders are worried about losing valuable sunlight.

The hullabaloo began in December, when Cafua Management, a Massachusetts-based conglomeration of the famous New England coffee and pastry franchises, bought the St. John the Evangelist Church property at the corner of Thirlmere Avenue and Main Street. The company proposed tearing down the church to build a 24-hour Dunkin Donuts to replace an aging shop nearby on Main Street.

But because of pending zoning changes that would make the church site unworkable for a 24-hour restaurant with a drive-thru window, the city is now considering leasing a 2.3-acre former park a few steps away on Main Street. The park is next to the Bet Haam Synagogue, at the corner of Main and Westbrook streets.

The convoluted development process has raised the question of whether the new zoning requirements will save the churchs neighbors from the distraction of a 24-hour restaurant, only to raise a new question of whether a tall building containing a Dunkin Donuts could block sunlight from the synagogues glass-walled sanctuary.

I want to make sure the neighbors around the church arent having a 24-hour drive-thru, because thats upsetting for them, and we want to make sure we still have sunlight coming into our garden and our sanctuary, said Lisa Munderback, president of the Bet Haam congregation. I hope Cafua will come to some mutually agreeable solution.

Widow finds new life in Fading Gigolo

Posted By on April 28, 2014

NEW YORK A Hasidic widow with six children who becomes involved with a male escort doesnt sound like the most relatable character, but actress Vanessa Paradis found universal themes in her role as Avigal in Fading Gigolo.

She comes from the Hasidic Orthodox community, where women have not much relationship or communication with the outside world.

So she, for the first time, gets listened to, looked at, asked her opinion, has a conversation. This woman suddenly gets a little life into her and she starts to radiate. Its a beautiful thing to watch, she said in a one-on-one interview at the Crosby Street Hotel.

But you can relate. How many people have forgotten about themselves taking care of others? How many worry their own happiness is too selfish so they dont allow themselves to have a little joy in life, whatever it is?

But Paradis, who has two children from her 14-year relationship with ex Johnny Depp, pointed out I dont have a life like my character.

Director-writer John Turturro also plays the gigolo Fioravante in this offbeat comedy, and Woody Allen portrays his pimp Murray.

Avigal, Paradis said, has completely faded away. Murray can sense that and wants to bring a little happiness in this womans life. This is how he brings her to Fioravante.

Paradis, 41, noted how unusually sweet this scenario is.

Yes, theres a gigolo business going on and theres sex in the movie but its a feel-good movie because all the women are treated like queens, she said of herself and co-stars Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone.

Fading Gigolo opens Friday.

Videos: Abducted Children In Brooklyn Rescued By Hasidic Shomrim Patrol

Posted By on April 28, 2014

Two children visiting NYC who were abducted from their relative's home in Brooklyn yesterday were found by the NYPD and members of the Hasidic Shomrim Patrol. The two 4-year-olds, a boy and a girl, were reported missing from their relative's apartment on 51st Street at around 4 p.m. Saturday. About an hour later, they were discovered thanks to the patrol, as you can see in the dashcam videos below.

The children, who were visiting from Israel and Switzerland for the Passover holidays, were returned safely. The suspect, 46-year-old Karen (Keren) Cohen, told police she had started talking to the kids while passing their apartment and they had asked to be taken to a nearby park. She has been charged with criminal trespassing and endangering the welfare of a child.

Last week, five members associated with the Williamsburg Safety Patrol Unit were arrested in connection with the beating of a gay black man in Williamsburg last December.

Holocaust Memorial Day; Why Palestine’s Mahmoud Abbas is Kidding No-one With ‘Sensational’ Comments

Posted By on April 28, 2014

Mahmoud Abbas, seen here with Barack Obama, has denied the Holocaust and continues to do so.Reuters Aside from Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, Holocaust Memorial day in Israel is probably the most solemn day on the Israeli Jewish calendar, a day of mourning and reflection, a day to commemorate the victims, but also to ponder our current situation and try and comprehend how all this fits in to the continuity of Jewish history. For Jewish Israelis, the Holocaust is a living memory, not only because survivors of that tragedy, our grandparents, great uncles and aunts, are still among us to testify and remind us of the horrors that they survived, but also because of our more recent history, and the fact that anti-Semitism continues to be a serious problem, practically the world over, and that we remain the target of genocidal threats.

The annual Israeli memorial day for the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust of the World War II begins at sundown Sunday.AP JERUSALEM Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened the country's annual memorial day for the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust by issuing a stern warning Sunday to the world to learn the lessons of the past and prevent another Holocaust. At the opening ceremony at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, Netanyahu linked the Nazi genocide to Iran's suspected drive to acquire nuclear bombs and its leaders' repeated references to the destruction of Israel and its denial of the Holocaust.
