Killing it in Mexico

Posted By on April 24, 2014

I confess that Ive felt a little guilty luxuriating in a Mexican resort during this Passover holiday instead of finding ways to connect with the long and painful journey of my ancestors. But I did spend the first part of the holiday in freezing Montreal, so maybe that compensates somewhat.

I was invited by Presidential Kosher Holidays to give a few lectures at a resort near Cancun, where several hundred mostly Orthodox Jews have gathered from across the country, and how could I say no?

Its as if theres an unwritten message floating here that says: Maybe our people suffered for 5,000 years so that we wont have to.

But lest you think its all fun and games, theres plenty of serious stuff, too: Daily prayer services (Ashkenazi and Sephardi minyanim), Talmud learning, Torah sermons and, of course, the speakers.

This year, one of the speakers was former Ambassador and Middle East expert Dennis Ross. His lectures covered the unraveling Arab Spring, the comatose Israeli-Palestinian peace process and the continued nuclear threat from Iran.

In the comedy business, when you do very well, they say you killed. Well, at the lectures I attended, Dennis Ross killed.

He killed not only because he is so knowledgeable (he may have done more Middle East diplomacy than anyone alive), but also because his insights have the ring of truth.

A rabbi friend once told me that the ring of truth is even more powerful than truth itself. Thats because the ring of truth is familiar. Its plausible. Its already inside of us. A good speaker will help us uncover it.

In his lectures, Ross uncovered many insights that rang true. One of them: Dont play nice with bullies or theyll walk all over you.

Of course, he used more diplomatic language: When dealing with dictators, the key is to always show that any hostile action will carry a price. When that price becomes too costly, thats when bullies back down.

Cops Charge 5 Hasidic Jews In Brutal Assault Of Gay Black Man In New York

Posted By on April 24, 2014

NEWS

by D.L. Chandler (@dlchandler123) April 24, 2014, 12:15pm

In New York, a gay Black man was brutally assaulted by a gang of Hasidic Jews in the borough of Brooklyn last December. Now, police have charged five of the gangwith several assault charges although hate crime charges have not been filed.

Taj Patterson, a 22-year-old fashion student, was walking to his home in Fort Greene December 1 when he was reportedly attacked in Williamsburg by roughly 20 Hasidic Jews wearing similar uniforms according to eyewitness accounts. Witnesses also allege that the group belonged to the Williamsburg Shomrim, a Jewish neighborhood watch group in the area.

Patterson says the men came up behind him, then began punching and kicking him to the ground. The assault was stopped when MTA bus driver Evelyn Keys got out of her vehicle and broke apart the melee. In the attack, Patterson suffered a broken eye socket, a torn retina, bruises and blood clotting. He was treated at Woodhull Hospital.

"I'm walking down some block by myself and then the next thing I know, I'm surrounded by a group of Hasidic Jewish men and they're attacking me," Patterson said to Gothamist back in December. "I was alone. I was an easy target. I'm black. I'm gay, a whole slew of reasons."

The New York Daily News reported that five men have been arrested, including two men who fled to Israel and were taken from the country to face charges.

Aharon Hollender, 28, Abraham Winkler, 39, Mayer Herskovic, 21, and Joseph Fried, 25, were charged with gang assault and other counts, according to sources. The men were all arraigned on Wednesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court Wednesday afternoon. They were released on bails ranging from $25,000 and $50,000.

Each man faces 25 years in prison if convicted.

Skirball Cultural Center presents "Fallen Fruit of the Skirball," May 13-Oct. 12, Free Admission

Posted By on April 24, 2014

April 24, 2014 -

A centuries-old ketubbah (Jewish marriage contract), human rights, marriage equality, and love serve as inspiration for the artists latest public participatory art commission.

LOS ANGELES, CAThe Skirball Cultural Center presents an exhibition project with Los Angelesbased art collaborative "Fallen Fruit" by David Burns and Austin Young, opening May 13.

"Fallen Fruit of the Skirball" is the latest in the artists ongoing series of community-based projects that use fruit as a medium to explore social engagement. The exhibition will feature a commitment document co-authored by "Fallen Fruit" and the public and inspired by an illustrated seventeenth-century ketubbah (Jewish marriage contract) in the Skirballs museum collection.

Over the course of the six-month artist residency, the document and a selection of portraits of couples and weddingsall collected through public participationwill become part of an immersive art installation that features specially designed wallpaper created from photographs of pomegranate fruits and trees in Southern California. "Fallen Fruit of the Skirball" will be on view in the Skirballs Ruby Gallery through October 12, 2014. Admission to the exhibition will be free.

Prior to the opening, on May 4, "Fallen Fruit and the Skirball" will host a pomegranate tree adoption event, designed to inspire new forms of communal life based on generosity and sharing. Up to 150 young trees will be distributed to recipients who pledge to care for the tree and, if possible, plant it near the sidewalk where the pomegranates can be easily shared with neighbors and passersby. Details about the tree adoption event are included below.

In addition, during the run of "Fallen Fruit of the Skirball," the ketubbah that inspired the project will be on view in the Skirballs core exhibition, "Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America."

Evolution of the Project

This collaboration began with "Fallen Fruits" investigation of the Skirballs permanent collection of Jewish cultural artifacts, one of the largest holdings of Judaica in the world. The research uncovered an ornate Italian ketubbah dating back to 1677 and richly decorated with floral and animal motifs, zodiac signs and biblical scenes. In Jewish tradition, the ketubbah is a marriage contract signifying mutual commitment and partnership. Both the cultural ritual of marriageespecially in the context of contemporary struggles to achieve gender and marriage equality for alland the symbolic meanings of the pomegranate are the inspiration for "Fallen Fruit of the Skirball."
