Obama to award Medal of Honor to 24 Army veterans

WASHINGTON Seeking to correct potential acts of bias spanning three wars, President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to 24 Army veterans following a congressionally mandated review to ensure that eligible recipients were not bypassed due to prejudice.

The unusual mass ceremony, scheduled for March 18, will honor veterans, most of Hispanic or Jewish heritage, who had already been recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross, the nations second highest military award. Only three of the recipients are living.

The Army conducted the review under a directive from Congress in the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act. The law required that the record of each Jewish-American and Hispanic-American veteran who received a Service Cross during or after World War II be reviewed for possible upgrade to the Medal of Honor.

The Pentagon said the Army reviewed the cases of the 6,505 recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, and found an eligible pool of 600 soldiers who may have been Jewish or Hispanic. The Army also worked with the National Museum of American Jewish Military History, the Jewish War Veterans of the USA and the American GI Forum, the largest Hispanic-American veterans group, to pinpoint potential medal recipients.

Of the 24, eight fought in the Vietnam War, nine in the Korean War and seven in World War II.

Union Bank, KCETLink Kick Off 2014 Local Heroes Program Black History Month Honorees Announced

Posted By on February 21, 2014

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2014

In celebration of Black History Month and as part of its ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and responsible banking, Union Bank, N.A., has partnered with KCETLink to honor two exceptional African Americans as local heroes. The 2014 Black History Month honorees are: Daryl L. Osby, chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Anthony J. Tolbert, associate director of admissions and outreach at the UCLA School of Law. Both will be recognized during a private February dinner celebration with their families and executives from KCETLink and Union Bank.

Since 1998, KCETLink and Union Bank have collaborated on the Local Heroes program and recognized nearly 180 honorees. The program pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large. The 2014 Black History Month honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in todays changing world.

Throughout the year, honorees will also be identified during Womens History Month (March); Jewish American Heritage Month (May); Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May); Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month (June) and Hispanic Heritage Month (September/October).

We continue to celebrate diversity at Union Bank, and we are excited to pay special tribute to these two extraordinary African Americans as we launch our 2014 Local Heroes program, said Union Bank Senior Executive Vice President Pierre P. Habis, head of Community Banking. The honorees embody the banks spirit of giving back, and we are thrilled to continue our nearly 20-year partnership with KCETLink that allows us to highlight their achievements.

KCETLink is honored to recognize the wonderful accomplishments of these two Local Heroes in celebration of Black History month, said KCETLink Chief Executive Officer Al Jerome. We are grateful to have a partner in Union Bank for supporting such a worthwhile program in our community.

The 2014 honorees for Black History Month are:

Daryl L. Osby, the first African American fire chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, has volunteered for many community organizations, including the departments Fire Explorer Program and Pomona Valley Hospital. He is the former president of the Los Angeles County Stentorians, an organization founded to end segregation and discrimination in local firehouses. Chief Osby is a true role model and a champion of life-long learning, having participated in continuing education and leadership development programs at Harvard University, Dillard University and Loyola Marymount University. He is also a California State Certified Incident Commander and Chief Officer.

Anthony J. Tolbert is associate director of admissions and outreach at the UCLA School of Law. He is passionate about helping homeless families, and for two years hes opened his home to families in need, charging them only $1 a month in rent while they get their lives back on track. Mr. Tolbert works with social service agencies to identify prospective tenants, and in 2012, a family lived in his South Los Angeles home after leaving an abusive situation. In 2013, he opened his door to a woman and her four children, and at the beginning of 2014, he welcomed a new family into his home. Mr. Tolbert has been honored with the Justice Cruz Reynoso Community Service Award by the Mexican American Bar Association (MABA).

KCET, the Southern and Central California public broadcast service of KCETLink, showcases the rich, vibrant history and cultural diversity of the region through the Local Heroes program and by airing special programs tied to the respective heritage months, and throughout the year.
