A radio host in Berlin who claimed the Holocaust was fictitious in an email has been fired by German publicly funded radio station RBB following a protracted row over the scandal.

The Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip has meant that farmers have not been able to export most of their produce, starving them of a much needed economic lifeline. Palestinian farmers grow strawberries, peppers, tomatoes and flowers, but Israel's security blockade since 2007 has meant most produce won't find an external market. According to the terms of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in 2005, about 400 trucks of fruit and vegetables should be exported from Gaza every day.

I advise the Hamas and Islamic Jihad not to test Israel's capabilities, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in response to the salvos of rockets that pounded southern Israel. Israel does not seek an escalation and will defend itslef against all those seeking to harm its citizens he said.

Hamas has moved to join the Palestine Liberation Organization, a key step toward unifying the long-divided Palestinian leadership. Hamas' leader Khaled Meshal on Thursday joined a committee that will prepare for elections to the PLO leadership. Those elections are likely years away but Meshal's move means he will work with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, head of the rival Fatah party.

For the first time since the creation of Israel 62 years ago, new citizens will be obliged to pledge loyalty to Israel as a "Jewish and democratic state." The bill which was supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came despite a split within his own ruling Likud party after some predicted the new legislation was a terrible mistake which would incite the Arab minority. The loyalty pledge was the brainchild of Avigdor Lieberman, the hard-right foreign minister whose party had proposed the similar loyalty oath for all Arab citizens as part of its last election campaign. The loyalty oath and the insistence that the Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as a Jewish state are said by some to be both racist and discriminatory
