Keeping Israel environmentally friendly

The Environmental Protection Ministry said it would award a total of NIS151 million over the next two years to projects and investments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of efforts to achieve a 20 percent reduction in gases by 2020. A joint effort the Ministry and the Industry, Trade and Labor Ministries have approved budget calls for NIS 40 million to go to specific projects and commercial installations .

Ashton visits Israel ahead of Palestinian bid for UN membership

Europe's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton travelled to Israel and the Palestinian territories this weekend in an attempt to get the parties to return to the negotiating table and get the Middle East Peace Process back on track. Palestine is preparing to apply for membership of the United Nations in September

US, Israel flights canceled ahead of Irene

Regular flights between Tel Aviv and New York were canceled over the weekend as one million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along America's eastern seaboard and New York City in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Tens of thousands of people are expected to be affected over the cancelation of flights between Israel and the US, particularly as this week is the last week of summer vacation. Israeli officials said the United States was the main destination for flights to and from Israel during the summer vacation.

Shalit marks 6th birthday in Hamas captivity

Dozens of supporters including Gilad Shalit's parents protested outside the Prime Minister's office in Jerusalem to mark the soldier's 25th birthday. It is the sixth birthday Gilad Shalit has marked since he was taken captive in June 2006 and forced to Gaza where he has been held ever since his capture.
